They should have stayed instead of doing something as dangerous as they did. And again it is a global problem not a Canadian problem. Should we do something to help, sure, but not bringing everyone here. And where will they end up in TO? 150,000 new people very yr to that city, this can't be kept up. If this was another government in another time, yes... the Minister would resign after such a huge embarrassment. But this gov't is so cynical that the Minister himself could be over there drowning refugees with his boot on their heads as they gasp for air and there still wouldn't be a resignation. The story is terrible, the government could be doing more, and I'm with you all the way on the access to information issue. Is this particular incident Alexander's fault, though? From what I'm reading, it was the UN that wouldn't recognise the boy's family as refugees and the Turkish government that wouldn't issue an exit visa. Was Alexander just following protocol then? How so, there was no immigration application form, there was a letter pleading for help....i wonder how many letters, e-mails , or correspondence this minister gets in a day.....and how many he takes action on.....there is a process, and it needs to be adhere to for a shit ton of reasons.... It is tragic that a little boy has drowned in a boat trying to get to a better life....but he is one of hundreds of little boys and girls that have drowned, or been killed on this journey.....who do we fire for those deaths..... Other points suggests that this family was already in Turkey....away from the fighting and prosecution that they so desperately seeked.....so what was the motivation to risk it all over again to travel further into europe....was it safety.... was it a promise of a better life....what made them risk every thing including their lifes.....and who takes responsibility for those decisions..... The only reason this has heated up was the photo and subsequent information that humanized the refugees. When one reads that 71 people asphyxiated in van it is no big deal - but see a picture of those men, women and children laid out in a row and talk to their relatives and the extent of the tragedy is more apparent. Harper led Canada into our involvement in Afghanistan, the bombing of Libya and now the bombing of Iraq and Syria without any consideration of the consequences or responsibility for our actions to the civilians in these countries. They are sinking in oil money and don't know what to do with all oil dollars not to mention that most likely all of these refugees speak the language of those countries and can start a life right away. I don't understand why this is his problem. I don't even understand that there IS a problem. The claim was assessed like all others. The family were safe in Turkey. Why exactly do you think we should have rushed to let them in as opposed to all the millions of others? Chretien led us into Afghanistan, and Harper's involvement with our allies in Iraq, Syria and Libya came well after the humanitarian crisis caused by violent conflict had already begun. CITIZEN_2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Report Share Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Yes their human rights records is miserable but as long as the refugees don't get involved in political opposition to the King or Sheik or Emir or whatever the hell they call it there who is ruling then they should be okay. On positive side they can start life right away and get a job (they speak the same language, have same culture/religion, adopt easy and fast to new home,.....) and start a normal life. Earlier reports said Canada rejected a refugee application from the boy’s family in June. But the boy’s B.C.-based aunt clarified Thursday, saying she had not yet submitted an application to sponsor his immediate family. In fact, she had applied for another member of her family, she said.
