This isn't a womens rights issue to me, it's about rationalizing behaviour that is completely unacceptable for any reason.

'

You are correct. This is about an individual being able to perform their work duties without having to fight off harassment. Harassment in the workplace also includes bullying by managers and colleagues, as well as fighting off the public.

Yelling FHRITP is not harassment nor a threat.

Criminal harassment

  • 264. (1) No person shall, without lawful authority and knowing that another person is harassed or recklessly as to whether the other person is harassed, engage in conduct referred to in subsection (2) that causes that other person reasonably, in all the circumstances, to fear for their safety or the safety of anyone known to them.

  • Marginal note:Prohibited conduct

    (2) The conduct mentioned in subsection (1) consists of

    • (a) repeatedly following from place to place the other person or anyone known to them;

    • (b) repeatedly communicating with, either directly or indirectly, the other person or anyone known to them;

    • (c) besetting or watching the dwelling-house, or place where the other person, or anyone known to them, resides, works, carries on business or happens to be; or

    • (d) engaging in threatening conduct directed at the other person or any member of their family.

Maybe point d, but again, you have to prove it is threatening, and the comment isn't even directed at the reporter, its directed towards the camera! And the guy who is being grilled isn't the one who said fhritp, it is the guy who lauged and said it was funny. Its not a threat to say dumb things. Now if he said I want to rape you or I want to f you right in the p then that would certainly be a threat. But a comment at a camera, isn't a threat. this is a comment directed at an audience to be disruptive and stupid.
I posted Kingston Police's response about causing a disturbance and how there's limits on freedom of expression. You can go back and read that.

I don't think the comment is actually directed at anybody in particular. More like a very rude live TV photo bomb. Male reporters get it too, and females have been shouting it, albeit way less than men. It seems to be a phrase that was chosen for some unknown reason.

If you seen the clips online, it is male and female reporters that get the FHRITP. And personally I think it's f'n hilarious. Trying to interview drunk people after a sports game is almost asking for it. That's where it seems to happen the most.

Bad humour is just bad humor. Has nothing to do with sexism.

ok, I was wrong. Apparently the phrase is not directed at the reporter. I don't think you can fault people for not "getting" it, though. Getting "Rick-rolled" is funny to people who know the context, but somewhat annoying to everybody else. And FHRITP is likewise apparently hilarious to people who know the context, but it's crass and boorish.

Of course it's directed at the reporter. Are you kidding me? If this were a male reporter do you think this stunt would have happened?

Apparently so. I challenged what-his-name to prove this happens to male reporters, and he delivered.

It may or may not be about the reporter because they are performing for the TV audience but logic tells you that a female reporter would be the preferred target when delivering a slur against women

We are talking about this instance. This woman has been harassed plenty of times with the same sexist insults. She finally stood up to it. Of course they were directed at her.

Of course you don't. Your are not a female reporter just trying to do her job and ends up having to fight for the right to do her job without sexist harassments.

You seem to have energized your base. I thought you were done, but glad to see you back - really. These people were lost without you!

Anyway, just to update you, In post #8...#8, I stated that this dude should be fired if he said that. Since then I've called the actions offensive, rude and obnoxious - and been very clear about it. I also believe that nobody should have to endure that treatment - men or women.

I gotta think your issue is that I'm supporting both the men and women who are bombed with this obnoxious stunt. That's weird, don't you think?

That's really inappropriate while someone is just trying to do their job. Humour is one thing, harassment is another.

Now, I'm not gonna watch all the videos - for obvious reasons, but in this video, I counted 43 FHRITP's. 22 with a female reporter and 21 with a male reporter. That tells me that these guys (and 2 girls) are not targeting female reporters, in fact they're mostly drunks and people just walking by.

I think this one demonstrates even more clearly that female reporters are definitely not being specifically targeted:

The prank is simply to see if you can get the outrageous phrase aired on live TV. Who is holding the mic is not even part of the equation.

It's juvenile, sure. But seeing how much some people are grossly over-reacting to it is hilarious.

I suppose the white ribbon campaign getting involved is over-reacting and hilarious at the same time.

This is an organization of men working to end violence against women. They are encouraging men to speak out when they see men yelling these sexist remarks.

It's not hilarious when reporters feel threatened while trying to do their job.

It's harassment no matter the sex of the reporter though. Sexual harassment...probably not.

:/

Yes it is.

But that's a human rights violation, not a crime.

Of course it should be stopped, hopefully this/these guys losing their jobs will help that.

My only real issue here, is that you ( and the media in general) don't seem to give a rats that it happens to men as well. If one reads that CBC article, they'd think that it's a women only issue and that certain female reporters are targeted and spoken directly to with the comment. When in reality, it happens to both sexes equally.

I've called the comment "sexist" earlier in the thread - sure, it a general sexist remark. But, Is it a comment directed specifically toward the reporter? No!

They're hooligans and hopefully this dude getting fired will curb their idiocy.

How can men feel threatened by these comments when they don't have a pussy?

How would you feel if you were on camera, doing your job and someone ran up and yelled...well, anything I would say would be edited - imagine a vulgar sexual reference towards men. I bet you'd still feel threatened and harassed, given the circumstances.

Harassment and sexual harassment are both crimes. This is cheap humour that can easily be viewed as harassment, and if aimed at a woman, sexual harassment. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

So if someone jumped in fron of a camera and yelled, "fire up the ovens, the Nazis were right". Jews shouldn't be offended. I shouldn't be offended as a human being. It's just a prank. No anti semitism involved. After all, no Jews or their body parts were mentioned, just ovens and a defunct political party. No actual physical act was proposed, no profanity used. Just drunken fun, that's all.

How thick does one have to be in either case not to make the connection and when do adults get held accountable for the actual things they say?

Nor are they normally referred to as "her".

It should be offensive to everyone. It should be doubly offensive to women. That's kind of what I've been saying all along (or what I meant to say, I'm sometimes far clearer in my own mind.

Most men have at least one, it's just not attached.

"Journalists doing their job" is an interesting phrase. There is no reasonable excuse for consenting to an interview and then using a profanity. My problem is with the "consenting" part. Some youngster with a microphone all of a sudden decides that he/is a journalist and the "publics right to know" supersedes common decency. I have seen people have a microphone shoved in their face and asked "How do you feel about the violent death of your ...". I am surprised more of them have not ended up with the microphone stuck up their *********.

I have been interviewed and the interviewer has been allocated politeness with politeness. I have also had that microphone stuck in my face by some jackass trying to follow an agenda and deadline. Those folks get the civility they deserve.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

Grossly over-reacting. Anyone who thinks this harmless prank is a real problem is not someone you can take seriously.
