Boges Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) In case anyone didn't hate the Senate enough. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/senator-nancy-ruth-slams-auditors-over-breakfast-claims-1.3018132 A Conservative senator today bristled at questions auditors have put to her about her expenses, saying she shouldn't be expected to eat airline breakfasts. "If you want ice-cold camembert with broken crackers, have it!" said Senator Nancy Ruth. Ruth said auditors had taken issue with "a couple of times that my assistant put in [a claim] for a breakfast when I was on a plane, and they say I should have not claimed because I should have eaten that breakfast. Well, those breakfasts are pretty awful. "I just don't think they understand anything of what it's like to have to fly around the world to get here to Ottawa." From the Dec. 1, 2014 to Feb. 28, 2015, Ruth charged $5,799.09 in living expenses in the national capital region and $11,014.87 in travel "between the senator's province/territory of appointment and the National Capital Region." Could anyone be more out of touch with the average person. This makes Bev Oda and her $16 Orange Juice Blush. And before the Harper haters get started, she was elected to the PCs and joined the CPC caucus BUT! she was appointed by Paul Martin. And from her Wiki Page Nancy Ruth crossed party lines to endorse Kathleen Wynne in her bid to win the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party in 2013; Ruth donated $10,000 to the Liberal MPP's campaign.[5] Edited April 7, 2015 by Boges Quote
Mighty AC Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) And before the Harper haters get started, she was elected to the PCs and joined the CPC caucus BUT! she was appointed by Paul Martin. Harper can be hated for countless of his own bad decisions. Even if he had appointed Ruth this wouldn't be something he should be blamed for. I think people across the entire political spectrum are disgusted when privileged politicians misuse our money. It's understandable that some may not like the food, accommodations or transportation provided but when it comes time to pay for the upgrades I can't understand why she feels justified reaching into the public purse instead of her own. On Guard for Thee Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 It will likely put a little spring in Mulcairs step as he has always promoted abolishing the upper chamber anyway. Quote
Big Guy Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Lots of these folks were never in politics but had a lot of money. They are accustomed to lavishness as a normal state of life. I have no problem with $18 orange juice or substituting caviar for cold cheese and broken crackers - BUT NOT ON MY DIME !!! They seem unable to differentiate what is acceptable with their money and what is acceptable with that of the taxpayer. Guest Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) I didn't read all the article, just the OP, but I agree no-one should be forced to eat anything they don't want to. If an employer agrees to pay for meals, then they should do so. My employer pays for my breakfasts when I travel even though all the hotels I stay in offer a free breakfast. I prefer not to eat their breakfasts, because I want to live. Edited April 2, 2015 by bcsapper Quote
Topaz Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 I know that some private business do pay for meals but when comes to the federal workers, especially MP's and Senators, they are making a lot more than the average private workers. Besides, those private businesses, I would guess can get a income tax write off, how does the federal government write off this kind of expense from itself???? I really think many of the newly appointed senators, should have taken the course of "senators for dummies" and MPs for MPs for dummies! Quote
overthere Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 when comes to the federal workers, When federal workers travel on official business, they get a per diem amount to cover the cost of meals . They can eat an included breakfast at their hotel, eat it elsewhere, bring bacon and eggs in their coat pocket, or skip the meal entirely. It does not matter, the daily amount remains the same. There are exceptions. if you're travelling to Iqaluit or to a place where it is impossible to buy 3 meals per day on the per diem amount, you can get receipts and claim the actual cost. Many private companies do the same, others require receipts. We once did an audit of the actual cost of the process, and switched to per diems because the admin cost of auditing travel claims for somebodys meals was just stupid. Quote Science too hard for you? It should have always been per diem....then she could've had "warm" camembert. Quote

Wilber Posted April 4, 2015 Report Posted April 4, 2015 I agree on the per diems for daily expenses other than for exceptional circumstances. With a straight per diem system, these situations would never come up. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

Bob Macadoo Posted April 4, 2015 Report Posted April 4, 2015 Are they Senators ? If not, then what... ? It's really disturbing....the people I was referring to actually believe "their" world is how it is for anyone not living on the streets. They do believe they're "common". jacee Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 Seriously, where do these people come from ? OR ... she could stick it up her butt. :/ Quote
overthere Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 It should have always been per diem....then she could've had "warm" camembert. Actually these situations would come up on per diems too. One of the many challenges that Nancy Ruth, Wallin, Duffy and many other Senators have had from auditors is defining 'Senate business'. Presumably you get the travel costs or per diems anytime you're on Senate business. Who defines 'Senate business'? One Senator claimed that the business of the Senate is being a Senator. Anytime he goes anywhere, he ends up doing Senate business, according to him. I'm not saying this is correct, but there is kind of an official acknowledgement of this in the way that Senators get free airline passes for domestic travel. Quote Science too hard for you? WestCoastRunner Posted April 8, 2015 Report Posted April 8, 2015 Nancy is a feminist, and she are never wrong, she is a superior being compared to the rest of us mere mortals. Ok, I can't resist. So, Feminists are superior and therefore are superior to you? Not a hard stretch, to be honest. Let's not forget, women and feminists think with their vaginas. Big Guy Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Just a serious question - Are lesbian feminists considered more feminist than heterosexual feminists? The mere fact that someone is a lesbian, does that make her a feminist?
