Big Guy Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 On Monday, July 28, a small group of Hindu priests arrived at Pearson International Airport. They requested that they be cleared by only male border officers. The CBSA complied with their request and juggled some schedules to accommodate them. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/cbsa-allowed-religious-travellers-to-avoid-female-guards-1.2730402 A female CBSA officer, fearing she could be disciplined for speaking out, spoke on the condition that her name and identity be withheld. The officer said she and her colleagues — whose job involves screening passengers for entry into Canada after they arrive on international flights — were told before their shift not to switch work stations with other officers without first asking a supervisor Is this religious freedom vs gender equality? The interesting aspect to this is that federal Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, whose office is responsible for CBSA representative said “we expect the CBSA to apply the same rules to all persons seeking entry to Canada.” The spokesman also said the minister "has asked the CBSA to investigate these allegations and act accordingly”. Later, on CBC, Paul Calandra, representing the PMO position backed Blaney in that these Hindu priests should not have been accommodated. This question of what is “appropriate accommodation” tore Quebec apart and I am sure that the Harper government does not want this as an issue. Just what is the level of “appropriate accommodation” on the federal level? Should these priests have been accommodated? Should the level of “appropriate accommodation” become an issue in the next election? RB Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 I might still be the only naive female left. First I just don't get what is so god fearing about women. Not to see them, associate with them and be seen by them. Quote
Topaz Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 I wonder what these priest would say if they only could see a female doctor, if they needed a doctor while here?? Quote
The_Squid Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 It's Canada.... We are supposed to treat each other equally. If the priests don't like it, they don't have to cross the border. Put them on the next flight back. Quote

Big Guy Posted August 10, 2014 Author Report Posted August 10, 2014 They were there already......they just wanted to choose which wicket they went to. No big whoop. I tend to agree. What if it would have been a group of old nuns from a monastic order requesting dealing with women only? I believe reasonable accommodation is accommodating someone for any purpose when it is "reasonable". We already make special provisions for the very old, ill or handicapped - where possible. The difficulty will be when people with turbans refuse to deal with government employees wearing a yamaka - and vice versa. It is still an issue that may rear its ugly head during the campaign for the next election. It will be interesting to see which direction the different party leaders will take. Wilber Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 (edited) They were there already......they just wanted to choose which wicket they went to. No big whoop. My thought as well. If half the agents are female, you might have to wait twice as long to get through, but CRA shouldn't be changing its staffing just to accomodate them.As far as the old, ill or hadicapped go, they usually let people in wheel chairs use the crew line. kimmy Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 I don't see this as a big problem. Don't we usually make an effort to respect this kind of request? For example if a strip search is to be performed on a female suspect, don't they generally have a female officer perform the search? Or allow a female patient to request that a female nurse be present during an examination? -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

This isn't really about gender equality. Nobody is saying that there can't be female border officials. Quote
