Boges Posted June 28, 2014 Author Report Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) Brazil through after a tight match against Chile I must say that I'm a bit puzzled why do people on this site say that they hope Brazil doesn't win and they hope that Germany/Holland will win. I would have thought you would have prefered any team of the American continent over any Europeans. There are two continents in the Western World. Many Canadians have more in common with Western Europeans than South Americans. Not that it's much of a factor anyway. Edited June 28, 2014 by Boges Quote

-TSS- Posted June 28, 2014 Report Posted June 28, 2014 Brazil will have to improve a lot if they wish to get past Colombia which at the moment is reducing Uruguay to rubble. I must say that Colombia has undergone quite an image-change in 20 years. They used to be a disgusting puppet of the drag-cartels; the murder of Escobar 20 years ago proved that. Today they are even sympathetic. Quote

Not that it's much of a factor anyway. CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are different football-federations but in the strict geographic sense America is one continent. Sub-divisions into North-, Central- and South-America does not change that fact. It is similar to as Asia being consisted of oriental Asia, the Middle-East and South-Asia. Besides, returning to football again, the Central-American teams come from your federation. Quote

That being said, I like Argentina and Messi. I just don't like Brazil, never have, has nothing to do with where they are geographically. They're like the New York Yankees of International Soccer. Is it because they are from the biggest city or are there some other reasons for disliking them? Quote

WWWTT Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 Brazil is not a poor country. There are lots of poor, but plenty of money in the country. The poor centralize in the North East, but their economy is bigger than ours and in fact is the 8th largest. 200 million people and the fifth largest country in the world population and area. Not sure what the wealth distribution is like. But we both know for a fact that a better job can be done there. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! WWWTT Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 Perhaps the world cup this year and the olympics in two year's time will prove to be good advertisement for Brazil as a country of tourist-destination. Never been there myself but what I've heard it's a marvellous country but it has a reputation, perhaps a justifiable one, to be a really rough and violent country, which of course does make potential tourists to go elsewhere. Want to hear a story about how rough it is there? My father used to live in Brazil during the 1950's (don't remember what city though) He was working at a bakery and delivered bread every morning. There was this guy who use to hang out at the bakery and one day this other guy came looking for him there with a machete and chased him out into the back lane. According to my father, this was the last time he saw his friend. At another time, while on his delivery during the early morning, he saw a bag beside the curb while walking back to his car. He looked in the bag and was revolted and vomited to find a dead baby girl inside. He soon had enough and left! No way I'm ever going there! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! -TSS- Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 I hope Costa Rica's fairytale continues. I know one shouldn't mix politics and sports but as Costa Rica meets Greece it is impossible not to dislike the Greeks given the euro-crisis. That country has cost a fortune to every Western-European tax-payer. But that's enough about politics. I sincerely hope that Costa Rica wins for the sake of themselves. Quote

Boges Posted June 30, 2014 Author Report Posted June 30, 2014 I hope Greece loses because their very presence in the knockout round is based on a fraud. They must have used their EU bailout money on the refs. How many cards were the the Costa Ricans given in the second half? They gave the goalie a yellow card! And of course the Red card that basically gave Greece a power play for the rest of the game. Good on Costa Rica. I feel like buying their flag to put on my car. Holland came a few minutes and a Robben flop from losing to Mehico. I can see Costa Rica taking them out too. Quote

Mexico may have had Holland on the ropes, but they're a much better squad than CR. I mean anything can happen, but this is a longshot of longshots. Quote
