-TSS- Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Good for the sport that once so dominant champions have been toppled. Bad for the tournament though. It seems that Italy is the only team which has a realistic chance of beating Brazil; especially as Brazil will certainly get assistance from referees as well. As for Spain, they have a new era beginning in their football. I guess they had not renewed the team enough. It was too old and the all important hunger for success just wasn't there any more as almost every player of that squad had both world cup and European championship gold medals in their cupboard. Black Dog Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 All things must pass and so passes the reign of the greatest team ever assembled. I'd be surprised if we see their like again. Good for the sport that once so dominant champions have been toppled. Bad for the tournament though. It seems that Italy is the only team which has a realistic chance of beating Brazil; especially as Brazil will certainly get assistance from referees as well. LOL. Germany, Holland, Italy, even France or the USA all would have a legit shot at beating Brazil. Hell after today I wouldn't even count out Chile. Brazil isn't that special, Quote
-TSS- Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 You don't have to play outstandingly every match especially in the group-stage. It is enough to play well enough to get out of the group. When the elimination-round begins Brazil is still definitely the biggest favourite to win the tournament. Quote
guyser Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 What kills me about host countries is their complete lack of know how on virtually anything. Well, let me correct that and say hosts from 2nd or 3rd world countries. Brazil, really? A balsa wood wall for the media centre? A 4 yr old would break through bouncing a ball and yet you have crazy South Am ...the craziest kind, lining up on the other side of said wall? No guards anywhere near the gates and allowing a bum rush of 1000 people? Whatever....its Brazil. Go Dutch ! Italy...fall down and get boo boo. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 England in a quandary now as practically one man beat them as they lost to Uruguay 2-1. Luis Suarez is just world class. England can still qualify but it's not in their own hands any more. Quote
Guest Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Sigh. I don't know why I put myself through this every four years. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Sigh. I don't know why I put myself through this every four years. Cheer up! Tomorrow Italy will beat Costa-Rica by 1-2 goals, which means they will have to take seriously their final group match against Uruguay and as well win it while England beats Costa-Rica comfortably and there it is for you: A place in the round of 16. -TSS- Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) Brazil or Italy, the two most successful world cup nations, one of them will win this time too. They may not meet in the final but one of them is going to win. The world cup in Brazil and Brazil not winning? That's just ridiculous, isn't it? However it happened 64 years ago and to some Brazilinians that is still a major sporting-trauma. They will do their utmost for not that to happen again. Even the referees will help them if the need be. Edited June 20, 2014 by -TSS- Quote
Guest Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Well, hopefully Her Majesty is up for it. Although I would probably push for a win over Uruguay too. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/world-cup-2014-mario-balotelli-demands-a-kiss-on-the-cheek-from-the-queen-if-italy-beat-costa-rica-tonight-to-keep-alive-englands-faint-world-cup-hopes-9550866.html Quote
Big Guy Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Sigh. I don't know why I put myself through this every four years. Perhaps you enjoy excellence. It is always refreshing to see the best players in the world play in such a short time and with that kind of detailed coverage. I find the TV coverage excellent and the commentators on CBC very well informed. It is very entertaining. BTW Germany for the cup. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
-TSS- Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 There goes England's last hope as Costa-Rica sensatioanlly beat Italy. Deservedly so. By the way this tournament is going CONCACAF could claim an extra-berth in the next tournament. Quote
Guest Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 At least we get to see either Italy or Uruguay go home early too. I'm glad Costa Rica made it through. Quote

I find the TV coverage excellent and the commentators on CBC very well informed. It is very entertaining. BTW Germany for the cup. That's exactly why. I love the World Cup, and it sure isn't due to the performances of my team. I can see Germany taking it too. I'd like to see the Dutch take it. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I feel bad for Iran. I don't. They parked their bus in front of their goal and hoped for a nil-nil. It didn't pay off. Quote
Boges Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 (edited) Almost did though. Reasonable strategy against one of the tournament' favourites. It takes discipline to play D that well. It took the world's best player to beat it. Edited June 21, 2014 by Boges Quote
-TSS- Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Had it been some Trinidad&Tobago or Jamaica or other tiny nation playing like that against Argentina it would have been considered as a brave fight but Iran just doesn't fall into that category. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 The match that just finished calls for this performance: Quote
Boges Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 Germany destroys Portugal. Ghana loses to the States. Ghana almost beats the Krauts. the USA could easily win this group. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 As for the French: 1994: Total failure, didn't qualify 1998: World champions 2002: Total failure, got stuck in the group 2006: Runners up 2010: Total failure, got stuck in the group 2014: anyone see a pattern? Quote
Boges Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) USA USA USA Uhh never mind. What a cross by Ronaldo! Edited June 22, 2014 by Boges Quote
Guest Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 (edited) That was brutal. 30 seconds from knocking out Portugal and advancing out of the group, and instead, you have to get a result against Germany to survive. Unless Ghana can hold Portugal to a tie. Edited June 23, 2014 by bcsapper Quote
Boges Posted June 23, 2014 Author Report Posted June 23, 2014 If USA and Germany tie they're both through. It's a longshot for Portugal to make it through Quote
The_Squid Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Ghana Is playing well. Maybe Germany wins, Ghana wins and USA and Portugal go home. Quote
