A&E knew damn well what this family was all about, including Phil's specific religious leanings and previously expressed beliefs about homosexuality. Phil should continue to hold his ground based on his constitutional rights, and we will see if A&E can figure out how to continue milking this evangelical family for high cable TV ratings.

This has nothing to with any constitutional rights. Companies do not like to associate with people publically say things that are not conducive to their brand image. Its not different than sponsors dropping Tiger Woods because he banged a bunch of porn stars, or hollywood producers shunning Mel Gibson because he went on a rant about Jews.

A&E and its sponsors are free to make any production choices they wish, and we already know what choice they made with the DD family and their beliefs. Why just a "suspension" if A&E is so concerned. Cancel the show...advantage Phil.

Phil can legally say whatever the hell he pleases, and he doesn't need A&E to do it. It's not like he lives in Canada...land of HRCs and hate speech laws.

This whole "controversy" is appearing very staged, he's now allowed back too. It was just one big drawn out publicity stunt and all of us with an opinion one way or another seem to have fallen for it.

I agree. A & E as well as GQ have had a field day. Great publicity. And now tomorrow night I'll finally get to sit down and watch the Duck Dynasty Christmas episode I've had on DVR for a week or so. Yay!

You're exactly right. You have to watch what you say around here. Otherwise you'll find yourself in front of a HRC for no apparent reason. See McLean's magazine as an example. Although there are others. Leftwingers up here sometimes won't even allow conservatives to speak at universities. They throw hissy fits in order to prevent people from speaking. But they'll tell you how tolerant they are, and how us conservatives should be more like them!

The best part of this guys rant is where he sais that the US Christians are rallying behind a fake image!

Actually it's funny! It reminds me about a story I heard, apparently back in the sixties, some people in the US requested the US navy help search for the survivors of the shipwreck SS Minnow from Gilligan's Island! Now I thought that would have been more than likely a rumor, but now, after seeing the link that I provided, you've got to wonder?

In a way, it doesn't matter because the public persona is just meant as fuel for the furnace that is the public entertainment machine. And even this controversy is a dull kind of entertainment for those who would rather have a meta-discussion than to watch the actual show.

He's both, a so-called "swampy hillbilly" ( I can't believe that term is still acceptable in today's PC culture, I guess it's still the only acceptable form of stereotype still allowed. Funny how that works.) and an MBA "type". The family is real. That's part of the appeal of the show, and why people like it. I think at first A&E thought people would watch to laugh at them. But instead they watched and laughed with them. It kind of backfired.
