Shady Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 I can't believe that Spain lost to Switzerland today! Also, I wish FIFA wasn't so afraid of offending South Africa, and banned those stupid horns already. I don't care if it's some South African tradition. It's annoying as hell. Quote

All those silly flags stuck in car windows?Soccer, like golf,is an afront to lawns EVERYWHERE!!!!!But there's money in those lawns:When Lionel Messi or Wayne Rooney kicks a chunk out the turf at the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup, Terry Scott would have every right to be worried. After all, his company, Pickseed Canada, has a vested interest in the grass on which the Argentinian and English soccer stars will be playing, as it has provided two varieties of perennial ryegrass seed used to seed 13 giant stadiums across South Africa. wyly Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 injuries are to be expected... those f*****G horns, nothing to do with tradition and culture of S Africa they're a relatively new creation claiming otherwise would be like saying those annoying thunder sticks we hear at our sports events are part of our culture, if anything the horns demonstrate a lack of creative culture...I've noticed the broadcasters are muting the horns as much as possible, I thank them for that... N Koreans...typical of all the weaker teams throw up a wall of defenders and play for the draw...Swiss executed the negative game perfectly at Spains expense, not pretty to watch luckily more often than not these weaker extreme defensive sides get weeded out.... RB Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Discuss... I got stressed out with the vuvuzelas. Goodness, that terribly annoying monotone...I even stopped watching teams I don't wish to win, and now I am more stressed that I am missing out. Wilber Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 France's thumping by Mexico must be a small consolation to Ireland at least. Mexico may not be the best team in the tournament but they are entertaining to watch. As far as the horns go, it's South Africa's party. Deal with it. I know this is a matter of opinion, but it's hard to imagine that a loud constant droning which sounds like an angry swarm of hornets the size of Jupiter would not be universally annoying to most people. It's almost like the unsettling cacophonous cello noises you would hear in a horror movie, only the haunting music never ends. Fans scraping their fingernails across chalkboards would be a step up. wyly Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 (edited) Are the vuvazelas really any worse than those stupid "thundersticks" that dumb-ass football fans used to pack around?same... the difference is duration, thundersticks usually aren't continuous...I was sitting behind two kids about 9 or 10 with thundersticks at a ManU match a few years back, they never watched a minute of the match just randomly banged their sticks throughout the entire match, I had the worst headache of the decade that night, left the match early...Surely they're no more annoying than Euro soccer fans whistling continuously during matches.no they don't, been there...if they're whistling it's because they're pissed at the performance of the teams or lack of effort... August1991 Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 (edited) No, seriously. What's this about red and yellow flags? WTF? What kind of sport depends on referee flags - rather than basic competition? And what kind of sport allows players to feint injury? And, for a spectator, when someone tries to score a goal, it's exciting. Well, in European football, how many shots on goal are there? And in hockey, how many? ---- I'm abroad now and this World Cup irritates me but Canada seems so mature. We North Americans (Canadians and Americans) seem to fly flags celebrating our team - regardless of their origin. (In Montreal, there were Canadiens flags and references to Halak, a Slovak.) In Germany and France, Europeans only fly flags of their country. I prefer the American way in society. Edited June 20, 2010 by August1991 Quote
msj Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 No, seriously. What's this about red and yellow flags? WTF? What kind of sport depends on referee flags - rather than basic competition? And what kind of sport allows players to feint injury? Football (both soccer and NFL/CFL football) have flags and also have players feint injury (in the NFL I recall San Diego QB Philip Rivers trying to draw a penalty in a game with, I think, New England - it was laughable and surly the Italians could teach him a lesson or two). Of course, many sports rely on whistles, fighting, steroids and other substances rather than basic competition so.... And, for a spectator, when someone tries to score a goal, it's exciting. Well, in European football, how many shots on goal are there? And in hockey, how many? Football is different from hockey. If you can't follow along with the tactics and play then fine: it's not your game. BFD. I wonder how often football dweebs go into hockey threads and make stupid comments about there being too many shots on goal or too many fights or other such nonsense? For those who are into "the beautiful game" then I recommend this site which looks at tactics. For those who aren't - well, didn't your mommy every tell you that if you don't have anything nice to say then be a decent person and shut up? Or, just plain "stop your whining and grow up already." ---- I'm abroad now and this World Cup irritates me but Canada seems so mature. We North Americans (Canadians and Americans) seem to fly flags celebrating our team - regardless of their origin. (In Montreal, there were Canadiens flags and references to Halak, a Slovak.) In Germany and France, Europeans only fly flags of their country. I prefer the American way in society. This is the World Cup where each team is representing their country and each team is made up of people from their country (although some strange rules and strange things happen based on this father and that mother). If Canada was able to make the WC again then I would expect to see mostly Canadian flags along with the English, Dutch,Italian, Brazilian and other flags that I have seen. It appears to be a "my mother shot me out in this country so I will cheer for the country of my birth" type of thing. Oh, and "Brazil/Spain/Argentina/Portugal play pretty football so I will cheer for them too" also is seen quite a bit. And then there is the "my ancestors going back 6 generations come from England/France/Italy/etc so I will cheer for them..." None of it has to do with maturity - people are just rooting for their team using whatever reasons/emotions to justify their fandom. Once again, BFD. Every four years we hear the same thing: hockey is better, I'd rather watch paint dry, etc. It's the same old tired complaints from the same old tired people. It's a different game and not everyone appreciates it. wyly Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 Italy tied NZ 1-1 ! The big teams continue to underperform. they're not really...the big teams are dominating their games but coming up against stifling defending, teams that refuse to do anything but defend and are playing for a 0-0 scoreline...the only big country playing like crap is France but then they've reached the end of an era and have to rebuild...England is strong but getting frustrated and not handling it well...score lines don't reflect the difference in quality between the top ten and all the rest... I don't think the popularity of something says anything about the sophistication required to enjoy it. I used to play soccer, so I understand it. I played soccer better than I ever did hockey.
