Toronto-Quebec City High-Speed Rail
Army Guy replied to 500channelsurfer's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Your not very convincing, so Americans will be able to travel faster, and people in Ontario and Quebec will be able to take a ride on an over priced high speed rail.....does that trump our faulty healthcare, education system, outdated infra structure....i guess we fix them when exactly ?or do we even care...... Carney plans to spend 500 bil in the next 5 to 10 years, plus another 100 bil per year on defense, and now a 90 to 120 bil on a HSR project...did we recently win the loto, or find one of those liberal money trees...who pays all of this debt....and if 90 to 120 does not make people blink or ask questions and HSR is "SO" important why not finish it all across the country, East to west south to north.... or is there a limit , a line in the sand we don't cross, ....With so many things that are broken in this country ..this is the hill we should attack with all our resources....we don't run our personal lives like this , we buy what we can afford....we can not even build a simple pipeline....and yet we want to try HSR... -
I think 2 % would be enough as well, but then again we waited until everything rotted out to start all of this....but since we are including everything under the sun today, like major highways in the north, water treatment plants, new infra structure at airports and new power plants, that will be multi use civilian and military....it should be easy to spend 5 % and get major projects down not only up north but every where there is a military presence...plus we kill two birds one stone, Indigenous get clean water and we increase our military presence up north.... When you say it does not cover the middle east you mean those middle eastern countries not in NATO right....What about British forces that have been attacked on British bases do they count....what about French forces on French bases do they count...or does it only count when they are in their home countries ? ....

Toronto-Quebec City High-Speed Rail

SO we need to keep up with the jones....that's your selling point...Have you looked at train tickets lately....how much do you think a one way ticket is going to cost....and how long before it will be paid off...some estimate well over 45 years...about the time it will need major repairs...With everything that is wrong with this nation now, why would we NEED to build another cash cow... -

So why don't we reinvest more into our health care, education system, poor infra structure....i find it funny that we can't fix what we already have , instead of jumping on the band wagon about some HSR project that may only serve 50 % of the country....while 100 % of the country pays....Is this how the left runs its house hold when the roof needs fixing i buy a new car, boat and motorbike, when the basement is flooding i go on vacation...and buy lot tickets.... Mean while on the right side of the spectrum we fix the roof before it starts to leak, and we invest in repairs so they don't cost major dollars in the long run....90 to 120 bil is a very conservative estimate, and if history is anything to be judged by this is going to cost hundreds of more bils...And could fix our struggling health care system, education system, invest in our poor infra structure, or could be used to power the nation through Nuke power, i could find a million ways to better spend these bils... Maybe you guys could list all the benefits this HSR is going to bring that would over ride fixing what we already have... -

That's half the problem with the left they want it all....if we could afford it 40 to 50 years ago we would have built it, so why is so attractive today.....where are we getting all the funding from, Carney just announced we need another 100 bil for our military each and every year.....now we need another 90 to 120 bil for a train. Does money grow on trees on your planet ...... you must be happy with the state of our health care, education system, current infra structure, lack of housing, homeless camps, and the rest of the long list of things that 90 to 120 bil could solve...but no we need a HSR system because we should have done it 40 to 50 years ago...well we missed that train, we have a lot of problems older problems that need fixing as well , before we start jetting around on a train that only services 1/3 of the country... -

Yes because the rest of the country is in flames , lets distract them and build a HSR, makes sense.... -

Just a question, how many jobs does 90 to 120 bil buy ? must be some of the highest paid in the country...would it not be nice to i don't know fix health care, our education system, sink some money into our infra structure....might even create more jobs....and get more done..... -

I think we are bleeding top talent for many reasons, like affordability, poor health care, poor services, poor infra structure, etc etc the list is endless...that and we can not get any project up and finished...90 Bil would go a long way to fixing health care, education system, build a pipeline, or two, our outdated infra structure...something ALL Canadian could use... -
Negative, Huston....Coast guard is controlled by Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard who comes under the minster of national defense...Not the military, the military or (Canadian armed forces)is controlled by the CDS.... ....the military also comes under the minister of national defense....I gave you the organizational chart as a source document....no where does it say coast guard falls under the military....Military is not DND, it is part of DND.....DND is a separate civilian organization...I'm sure you explained this to me years back....
-
OK, a new mandate ....they are not equipped for any military roles, their main function is safety on our water ways........It still does not make them part of the military...They are the coast guard period, there boss is not the CDS but rather a coast guard officer...who happens to fall under the department of national defense...They could not even do fisheries patrols why is that ? Because they did not have the right equipment... https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-coast-guard/corporate/about-us/who-we-are/our-mandate.html https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/transport-surveillance-environment-drones-defence-9.6982250 Even CBC see it as no more than padding the military NATO spending, those in those departments don't even know what is going on or won't say....like how to communicate with each other, what is their role, where is their role....at this point i don't think they care, that being said I'm sure those other departments are shaking their heads, the first place government look to save some money is DND, and now it has more bones to pick over...

This whole thing is embarrassing, the fact this represents a portion of Canadian society is crazy, i hope that this segment is shrinking fast, This is not Canada we all grew up in.......and for anyone thinking that DEI does not exist, watch those videos, because it is eye opening...I hope we all wake up soon, the very fact that this has become the state of a Federal political party is unnerving / scary...and at one point we thought the PPC/ Bloc parties was on the fringes...these guys take crazy to a whole new level....

Except that those other countries have a much different mandate for their coast Guard, which is used to patrol their coast lines and most are armed, and assist with military mission sets, and while we do have a coast guard it does very little of those things....NATO definition for what a coast guard is , is pretty vague, but ours does very little of what is expected. NATO does not have a single, universal directive that mandates a specific set of actions for all coast guards. Instead, the role of a coast guard within NATO is framed by the need for interoperability, maritime security, and contribution to collective defence, particularly regarding the protection of critical undersea infrastructure and surveillance. As of 2026, NATO's focus is on integrating national coast guard capabilities into its broader maritime posture, especially for Arctic and Northern security. Key Requirements and Functions While national coast guards are often civilian, NATO membership requirements or voluntary alignment mean they are increasingly expected to: Contribute to Total Defence/National Security: Coast guards are expected to support military defence and civil preparedness by ensuring the security of national waters. Enhance Surveillance and Intelligence: Modern requirements include gathering and sharing security intelligence for a comprehensive picture of what is happening in territorial waters. Protect Critical Infrastructure: A major focus is detecting and responding to threats against critical undersea infrastructure. Maintain Interoperability: Coast guards must be able to work alongside NATO navies (Standing Naval Forces) and partner coast guards, using interoperable technology for maritime domain awareness. Conduct Maritime Security Operations: This includes contributing to tasks like combating terrorism, maintaining safe and secure maritime environments, and participating in border control and search and rescue (SAR)

No it has not been moved under the military....., while it may be under the Ministers of national defense umbrella, it remains the coast guard, Separate chain of command, separate mission sets, CDS does not control coast guard personal or assets....... . It does not have a military mission, it is unarmed, and does not have a role to play in any battle space... Yes for NATO accounting purposes it's budget does count toward our 2 %, those are NATO rules....here in Canada, Coast guard still has it's budget allotted to it,
-
Just because the department comes under the minister of national defense, does not mean it is part of the military, That is not what i said, minister of national defense has many different departments under his preview.... Coast guard does not come under the "military" it has it's own chain of command, does not have any military mission sets, nor does it share any battle spaces with the military, and it's federal budget is allocated to the coast Guard which is separate from the military's....your confusing what happens here in Canada and how we account for expenditures to NATO....two separate things.... https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-coast-guard/corporate/about-us/who-we-are/organization.html Canada reports many different departments expenditures towards it NATO 2 %, like transport Canada aircraft, portions of RCMP budget, the entire VAC budget, National emergency preparedness, etc etc... building road networks, sewage plants, water treatment plants in the north are all reported as expenditures under NATO....as laid out under the NATO policies. Much different than those policies here in Canada.... Two very different accounting practices... Communications Security Establishment (CSE): Funding for cyber security, intelligence, and communications intelligence operations. Infrastructure and Security Spending (Dual-Use Items): Under the new 5% of GDP commitment (for 2035), Canada includes 1.5% dedicated to "defence-adjacent" or "dual-use" items, such as maritime ports, airports, and other infrastructure that serves both civilian and national security needs. Defence Innovation and Research: Funding through the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Programs (IRAP) and the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII). NATO Common Funding Contributions: Direct payments for NATO’s civil and military budgets, including the NATO Security Investment Program (support for IT systems, fuel storage) and NATO Centres of Excellence Canadian Coast Guard: Operating expenditures related to maritime security.
-
No coast guard is not part of the military, it has it's own separate department/ chain of command, it does not take orders from DND, nor does it perform any military missions....for "accounting" purposes it falls under the military spending for "NATO" accounting, as per NATO policies for all NATO countries... It is still a separate federal department with it's own budget attached to it's operations....As are portions of the RCMP budget accounted by NATO for NATO accounting purposes, as well as minister of transport aircraft budget counted towards our NATO military budget...each one is a separate department with separate HQ's and separate federal budgets. They are connected Via what is allowed to count as Military spending by NATO policies for accounting only.. no one falls under the department of defense

I find it a bit ironic for liberals voters to be complaining about any conservative MP....wasn't it you guys that elected the Canadian icon, Justin not once but three times....give your heads a shake.....you really got to be some kind of genius to do that..... ...when you've shown the world you can't be trusted to vote responsible...and put more faith in good hair and socks...That's the standard you have chosen... The majority of Canadians are complaining about immigration levels... including refugees, don't you liberals even listen ?
-
That's the answer to everything, so be it, We have lots of bad choices when it comes to a lot of Canadian industries, maybe that should be the new Liberal moto so be it...
-
That's a good question last time Justin entire stick was we need to diversify our Chinese trade....And yet here we are after all that pain and suffering we have re written our moral and values code, now it is ok to trade with people that have a huge record of unfair tariffs or trade practices, now Liberals view it as we can trade with anyone...now that are moral compass does not get in the way...which is why i asked can we trade with Russia, Iran, maybe Cuba...and if not why ? i know why becasue you don't have the answers and some place out there in liberal land there is a red line , where is it ?

Our crosses are not the same, not even close....there are only a few vocations in Canada that could order you to your death....and just because we all pay taxes does not mean we are treated the same or even have the same rights, nor are we fully protected under the constitution. Yes i chose the military path, what i did not choose was for my government and a large portion of Canadians to turn their backs on us after we agree to sacrifice everything for them.......Military is not asking much just to have the proper equipment to survive....and for some reason that is a battle ....But we can put tampons in the men's bathrooms, Did you hear Justin tell a combat vet who had lost his leg, he was asking for more than he could give ? Have you heard of soldiers suing the government to get care or benefits Canadians already enjoy....So we may all carry crosses but they are not all the same... My experiences in the military have made me judgmental towards the governments of all strips, and towards the left for the most part, but my experiences were shaped for the most part in combat or peace keeping tours....doing a job with half the proper tools, and equipment and seeing the consequences of being how being cheap, be it bloodied bodies of comrades, or bodies of good friends in plastic bags, you might become a little cynical as well...
-
Ya i do know how long things take...which is my point here....The military has constituently never spent its entire budget not in 30 years any ways because of the time required to buy stuff....now give the military 10 extra bil dollars well past mid year of the fiscal budget and what do you think is going to happen...DO you think it will get spent ? ... and have you ever seen that much funding spent in a short period of time , ever? in less than 5 mouths ...I will give them the easy way to get rid of that much is a pay raise...which they did, but that accounts for less than half that 10 bil...there is no way the military or government could have spent over 5 bil for start to finish in less than 5 months....Not even carney could perform that miracle...I mean shit it took 20 years to replace a 9 mm pistol, they still have not chosen a x cross ski to buy and i retired in 2014.....and i worked on that project on and off for 3 years...
-
Nope, i do have accredited procurement courses on section 32,33, 34 of the federal governments procurement, along with a vast array of other courses related to procurement, like green procurement, indigenous procurement , etc etc i also have experience on smaller National procurement projects such as the army snow shoe, and x cross skis projects...And while i was not in charge of any of them i was another cog in the wheel so i do have a fair idea of how the system works... And just a note i don't think any of the people that had a finger in the pie was an accountant or a degree in finance...

I'll be honest with you, when your in the military your don't put much heed into what any politician or Canadian citizen says or does....the military is for photo ops, and to plant the flag in in some war torn country, help with a ice storm or two, occasional floods or forest fires...and a place were they can find an easy couple of bils to fund some other political dream...So it grows on you, the only people you can depend was men and women already in uniform....everyone else had lets us down to many times to pin any hope on getting any help with anything....So the answer to your question is No we did not lose our shit...we did our jobs, and earned our pay, and shut out everything else....because we had lost hope in our government and the people we defended to do anything constructive......It is not just liberal or conservative governments...but the entire country... No, your nothing like me, you can't be bother with checking into all the lies, because there are a lot of them...if it comes from the conservative or for that matter any source it has to be lies...conspiracies...nothing more...and it is a liberal thing...

Why do we need to do business with China? are you saying we can not replace that portion of our trade....it represents less than 4 % BS, we have good product and I'm sure we can find a replacement..... So where is the red line here, or is there a red line at all, do we start a trade deal with Columbia, for drugs, It is a huge industry, how about Iran, Russia, why have we cut those guys off....If we are dropping all our morals and values for trade and income where is the red line...
