Just to clarify, we sent all we could to Afghanistan, at the peak it was 2 battle groups, for those of you who don't know what a battle group is...it is 2000 to 3000 personal...or half a brigade group....and we could not sustain that for long...so for the most part it was one small battle group....and we struggled to meet those commitments...and that came at a cost , with some soldiers doing 8 tours out of the 13 years we were there with the average soldier doing at least 3 to 4...and todays army is what is the result of those deployments... So yes we did show up, we contributed the very minimum we could,and Canadian soldiers paid the price while our government and citizens conveniently forgot about us,which meant little money, and very little in investments into equipment and in training...Most if not all that was accomplished over there came out of the military's budget...or the blood sweat and tears of our soldiers, airmen, sailors...Not Canada's finest hour, it was our military that carried that flag from start to finish....

Well if Carney said so it must be true....you make it sound like we just invested 900 bil into defence it was 9 bil of which 2.5 of that belongs to the CG....this new money will be used to pay for a pay increase,purchase disparately needed spare parts, update infrastructure, increasing ammo production, and ammo it selve and a large chunk will go into our northern fobs, and northern infra structure...a very small percentage of it may go into a equipment program, thats should be a red flag for all Canadians that we are so far behind that 9 bil is peanuts....while other NATO countries are investing more than 100 bil or more... American age is over is BS, we will still get the a good portion of our weapons for the states....this is all political chest puffing ,look at me...we are going to buy european now....sorry to say but the best equipment available is American....and we already have contracts signed sealed...P-8, maritime helos, MLRS, Awacs, F-35 all american weapons systems...even our new frigates have American sensors,VLS systems, Spy7 radars and sensors..Even our LAV's 6.0 are built by an american company....SO we will be doing business with the Americans for decades to come, unless your in BC then they do business with the China... NATO is on the verge of rising it's GDP % to 5 percent total....and by july Canada will go back to being lagards once again as Carney has said he has not intention to invest that much into defence....whoop there it is....

I get it the US has a major drug problem, and fentanyl is a huge killer of americans, and Canadians, and Canada should be checking every thing coming into our country,thats what border security does..... but our border security is not taken very seriously and does not have the resources to a complete and thorough job... so,again a canadian problem... Just a question, who is responsible to check all goods coming into the US ...And does the US check all exported goods leaving the US ?...So where does the failure lay, with Canada because weak border security, or because the US like Canada has weak security on the northern border... This is what i don't get .....with all the problems you guys have in the US with democrats, and blue states....why in the blue balls would you want to make Canada the 51'st state...a large portion of Canada is liberals or worse, and they make democrats look like hard core conservatives...even our conservatives are not as far right as your democrats..so whats up... No one is talking about making them part of the offensive chain, at this time, what i was talking about is them doing the law enforcement chain like fisheries patrol, maritime drug indication, stuff the navy does right now that is traditionally not Navy tasking but rather RCMP, and fisheries...And you don't need a huge naval gun to do that look at the AOP's it does the same missions but it does not have a huge main gun... It is simple then is it not, job descriptions and job skills change all the time, people adapt or find a new line of work...I'm sure like the Military there are tonnes of support roles that will not require any firearms training or more law enforcement taskings. not all CG personal just want to tend buoys for the rest of their career.... Liberals are studying just that as they have said, looking at arming the CG...no timeline nothing else was mentioned... Then you only prove this was done to enhance accounting measures only...a way to increase our GDP % without doing anything of real value....But the liberals did say they are considering arming them and giving them added responsibilities...which could be taking a active role in fisheries patrols, drug interdiction, perhaps even getting more investments into the department...and in order for them to do that they will be asked to step up.... CG is already part of the security apparatus, in the future they may play a bigger part, nobody is suggesting they be part of the NAVAL kill chain.

If they can teach a bunch of navy wogs, how to operate a C-9, or C-6 i'm sure CG personally will be fine.... And i'm sure if the Army can train the RCMP, Air force, and Navy on how to operate C-7 rifles they can train any one to use them effectively...enough for them to take non traditional navy jobs off our Navy's plate and giove the CG more roles to play, which might even play into more investment into the CG... They may not have been designed for war ships, but 3 NFLDS in a row boat armed with shotguns is a war ship...and while i don't think they will ever get to see naval warfare....they can be used to patrol for drugs , illegal fishing, other criminal activity that the Navy does right now... And while the liberals are considering arming the CG, nothing has been decided as of yet, They may not be warriors, but they sure can be another arm of law enforcement...

Agreed, but when your starving any little bit is welcomed....i can see investments into infra structures, but ammo and spare parts should be protected assets and be investments that are constant, not much good if your equipment can't run due to lack of spares, and well ammo speaks for itself, there must be some neglect their somewhere. I like the idea of the CG being brought under the budget, i mean they get peanuts now, and they do play an important role...i hope this is a sign to come where they do increase the budgets more to sustain, all of this going forward....Increasing the CG role in our security apparatus would take some pressure off the navy allowing them to do more navy stuff...instead of fisheries patrols or drug interdiction, etc...

True, but Canada has taken great care NOT to arm the coast guard, and pretty much limit their role in what they do...I just hope the government decides to arm them and expand their role , which will take some pressure of the Navy ie fishery patrols, drug interdiction, etc...i hope they increase their budget as well, if you think the forces are struggling , wade into the coast Guard budget...it's sad really...

It is not victimless, look at those that lost their lives risking everything to get into the US... not to mention economic losses like jobs taken by illegal immigrants, health care costs they incur, other resources they consume while in the country illegally...if it was as harmless as you suggest why is it illegal....why not let them stay...

Major liberal announcement on spending on our military...while this is great news, i'm hoping this is just the beginning 9 extra bil is not going to go far, i mean the projects they are looking for are pay raises, new PMQ and housing projects, other infra struture projects as many military infrastructure are way past it's due date, also purchasing spare parts for existing equipment......those projects alone could take more than 9 bil....Not to mention all the shortfalls just in regards to capabilities we have lost or let go, to replacing very old equipment. I guess we will have to see where the NATO submit brings in regards to the new levels being set as we speak to 3.5 % of gdp on pers and equipment, and 1.5 % on infrastructure... Carney has already hinted he is not going to commit to these new numbers...

No they are not, what you see on the media is a sound bite maybe a minute of what is going on, it provides you nothing more than a little taste of what life is like there, your only context for you is what you have experienced here....you have NO idea what it is like over there.... So yes i'm telling you you've made up your mind through a whole series of news bites and don't have a clue what is actually going on there in their day to day lives... I did not say the news is lying but your not getting the whole story in a minute news segment are you...and for you the news is your only reference...that and Palestinian propaganda...
