Japan 1945? Avoiding a Iran Ground War: Drop the bomb
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
Nowadays, Trump should maybe drop the bomb on Jeddah or Qom: leave Mecca like Tokyo it was. I'm Canadian. I sorta understand Americans. Other foreigners don't quite understand the frustration of Americans. -
Toronto-Quebec City High-Speed Rail
August1991 replied to 500channelsurfer's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Disagree. In polls, Canadians say they like rail. But in fact they largely fly, or drive. ====== Canada is a large country. Rail made sense centuries ago. Eisenhower created the Interstate. Now we use Starnet. -
California 2026: Republican Governor?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in State Politics in the United States
In my opinion, California should separate into two states. -
Obama Building in Chicago vs Trump Building in New York
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Arts and Culture
In Montreal, the Olympic Stadium is a concrete wonder. In Chicago, this Obama monument is: wtf? -
1. I recently watched this movie, again. It stands the test of time. 2. Irony. Often we the audience knew what was happening but the characters did not. If foreigners want to understand irony, this movie is a good example. 3. Billy Wilder had no other good movie. He famously said that he was a polka player in a guitar world. He died in 2002.

When people pray, they are in effect talking to themselves. Some people have a good conversation with themselves; others don't.

Birth right citizenship
August1991 replied to gatomontes99's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
In Canada, in federal and provincial elections, I show up, show my ID to people, it's checked and I vote for one candidate - one X. (I know the story.) In municipal elections, in Montreal, same process but several names for a X. (I'm confused.) ====== The US voting system reminds me of our Census form. I receive it in the mail. It has many choices. I usually throw our Canadian census form in the garbage. -
Birth right citizenship
August1991 replied to gatomontes99's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Facing the PQ, Pierre Trudeau changed Canada's Citizenship law in 1976. The PQ then decided that voter/residence required a health card. -

Here is Ann Coulter's interpretation of the 14th Amendment: https://anncoulter.substack.com/p/600000-men-died-for-anchor-babies -
I could be wrong but I reckon that most Americans don't care and don't know about Iran's regime - as long as they don't send planes into large American buildings. Or attack Pearl Harbour. ===== At present, the price of gasoline in New Jersey is around $4 per gallon. In Georgia, around $3.60. Trump will be a lame duck for his last two years.

From what I understand, California will choose (among two) their governor in November 2026. But they have an initial vote in June 2026 - to decide who will be the two. At present, there are several zillion candidates but it seems the top two are Republican. ===== Like Canada, California has about 30 million people. We have two federal official languages and 10 provinces. Caifornia has better weather.

Georgia: America's Quebec
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in State Politics in the United States
"My" indigenous population? ===== I object to the US federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it interfered in private affairs, and state rights. In 1967, our federal justice minister explained this better. -
How do you pay for health care?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
In Quebec, I can pay private. And I can claim on my income tax! -
Avi Lewis is like Justin Trudeau. He was chosen only because of the father's name, the family name. ====== Irony. Donald Trump defends better ordinary Canadians than these two rich, leftist children.

You and Missy are lucky. Missy is part of your family. My daughter's family had a wonderful cat for several days; then discovered it lived elsewhere. Scarlet? "I always depend on the welfare of strangers."

I agree. Cats, dogs. But mammals, we all burrow. In different ways. True, I have seen sparrows sit beside each other, and chirp But I have never ever seen a chicken burrow like a squirrel. Fish don't burrow. Ever.

Well said. === I reckon that that this Avi Lewis guy will resurrect the NDP. I live in Quebec. Avi Lewis is typical QS. I watch US politics, sorta. He is the new Democratic Party.

Canadians vs Europeans/Americans
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Irrelevant? ===== In 1750 or so, there were about 10,000 Catholic, French-speaking people in a British colony. What to do? Drown them? Put them on a ship and send them somewhere else? Let's try. === In 1763, after two Treaties in Europe, there were now some 60,000 people: Catholic, French-speaking, mostly stubborn Norman people. Too many to ship elsewhere. -
Canadians vs Europeans/Americans
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As you Americans would say. I agree the deportation of the 1750s was remarkable - in modern view. But at the time, it was irrelevant. The Brits had fought the French for Newfoundland, Nova Scotia. America was still a colony. ===== Margaret Thatcher made me understand Britain & Europe. The British always take the side opposing Europe consensus: -Britain chose Prussia in 1756 -France in 1800 -Germany in the 1930s -
Canadians vs Europeans/Americans
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You are using modern DEI sources. IMV, the history of people (French or other) in North America is much more interesting. ====== The Seven Years War ended with two treaties: Treaty of Hubertusberg, Treaty of Paris (in fact signed in Fontainebleau). The first treaty was far more important since it divided Saxony. -
Canadians vs Europeans/Americans
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The Seven Years War was between Prussia and Austria. France/England took sides. Canada was an afterthought. There was a rebellion in 1837 - far worse in Quebec. But nothing like your divide in 1861. As your president Lincoln said: "If this experiment in democracy is to exist, we must remain united... " Trudeau Snr would have said: "If this experiment in federalism is to exist, we must remain united... " I am states-rights. I admire your 10th Amendment. ===== We Canadians are both Roman Catholic and Protestant; English-speaking and French-speaking. Our first federal Catholic prime minister was an English-speaking Conservative. From Nova Scotia. We Canadians have no official state religion or culture. We have two federal official languages. And unlike Americans (and Europeans), we Canadians have never fought a civil war.
