  1. Disagree. The problem is not how much water is in the pool - it is whether it is rising/falling - and why. ==== In Canada, all governments added together, the pool is high. (Hydro-Quebec and the Caisse make Quebecers remarkably frugal. Typical Normans.) But with this current federal Liberal government, the pool level is falling. We are losing water for nothing.
  2. The gain is sufficient. Risk is risk. Tax is tax. Government bureaucrats cannot pick winners in life.
  3. There was this wonderful period in Europe between 1890-1910. Or, after 1990 Silver years.
  4. Blackbird, you kinda lost me there. ==== Nevertheless, I read your post. (Not the links.) In Brezhnev times, with much difficulty, I traveled. Communism was a threat. The Soviets wanted to take over the world. Deng Xiao Ping made it possible for me to travel to China in the early 1980s. ============= This current 21st century world is much better. Ordinary people are free. But I fear that our current elite is making things worse.
  5. I think this April 2024 federal budget is wise I would raise further the tax on any capital gain. Why should a capital gain be taxed less than any labour earning? ==== I object to the federal spending. Wasted.
  6. As Greg noted, please fix your thread title. You pose good questions. Federal Canada's debt is well below 100% of GDP. Like Norway, Quebec has the Caisse - mostly in US dollar denominated paper. The US federal government bonds are closer to a Ponzi scheme.
  7. The Defenestration of Prague in 1618 started the Thirty Years War The Bastille in 1789 started the Napoleonic Wars The Assassination in Sarajevo started the Germanic Wars. ==== Call it what you will, Europeans fight every few generations.
  8. In this post-1990 world, like in the late 19th century, we need a Trudeau-Kissinger structure of peace.
  9. I strongly disagree. I remember Soviet Russia (behind the Iron Curtain, as Churchill said)- I first travelled there in the 1970s. Maoist China? I first travelled in its remnants, early 1980s. Communist were a threat. Reagan won. ==== China and Russia are nowadays not a threat to the West
  10. Have you noted this terminology? Many years ago, young, I traveled with my own money. Years ago, I traveled with other people's money. Nowadays, I travel best.
  11. Robosmith, you make my point. Irony. ====== For Americans, you have invented a system (AI) to verify what you believe is true.
  12. IMHO, we are back to the world of the 19th century. August 1914.
  13. NATO (and SEATO) were created to limit the Soviet Union,a Communist/Marxist world threat, Red China. These treaties/alliances worked. The Soviet Union and Maoist China are no more. I was recently in Vietnam. I used my credit card in Hanoi.
  14. Showed up? Strong bipartisan support? ==== After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, at the first test, your President ran away. You Americans rely on technology to win - as if you own it.
  15. Disagree on both points. 1. Biden is not a coward. 2. Iran is a large country of many people.
  16. I wish. ===== Yet many voters in Ontario fear "separation". Quebec leaving Canada In IMHO, we need a new arrangement.
  17. The movie Airplane! was made in 1980. The first Naked Gun movie in 1988. These various movies were written by the same people. John Cleese once claimed that Americans don't understand irony. OJ Simpson and Leslie Neilsen are both now dead. RIP. But in their own way, they taught various Americans irony. In these 2020s I miss the freedom of the past. But then, how would a slave-owner remember the 1840s.
  18. Cool! Je ne savais pas, robosmith. C'est quoi, "planning and communication".
  19. Strongly disagree. In 1989/1991, Reagan, Nixon, Kennedy won - America won. Since then, like in 1815, we need a new order of peace. Clinton and Bush Snr meant well.
  20. Agreed. Iran is not a world power. But its leaders are stubborn. The Islamists arrived in 1979. They have survived longer than the western Shah.
  21. Your question captures a common sentiment surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). While AI has the potential to revolutionize industries and improve lives, there's also a fear of the unknown. Many people are uncertain about what AI is capable of and how it will impact society, which can lead to apprehension and mistrust. "Meet The New Boss -- Same As The Old Boss" highlights a concern that AI could perpetuate existing power structures or create new ones, potentially exacerbating inequalities or ethical dilemmas. It reflects the idea that while AI introduces novel capabilities, it doesn't necessarily change fundamental dynamics in society. To bridge the gap between fear and understanding, it's crucial to promote education and awareness about AI. By fostering a deeper understanding of AI's capabilities, limitations, and ethical considerations, we can empower individuals to engage with AI technologies responsibly and shape their development in ways that benefit society as a whole.
