New leader of the NDP - A Sepratist?
scribblet replied to pegasus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
At best Jack has shown a monumental lack of judgement. If she cares about the NDP she really should fall on her sword and resign now, there must be someone out of 103 MPs who would do a fine job. -
I think people have become inured to it, knowing full well that most of it is political. Also knowing that there is no surety that aid will get to those who need it as we know much ends up in the hands of the local despots. I don't have an answer but I suppose we have to dig into our pockets again and send anyway, but to whom - which is the best organization to give to. I like to international Red Cross for this. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23972311-somali-militants-refuse-to-let-in-aid-and-say-theres-no-famine.do

http://www.examiner.com/green-transportation-in-national/marietta-pedestrian-convicted-of-vehicular-manslaughter-while-walking This link has the most information, so IMO based on this, notwithstanding that the crosswalks were half a mile away, I can understand the reckless endangerment charge, but what other choices did she have? The driver should be still rotting in jail as he is a repeat offender, he is getting off to lightly. Not sure at all this has anything to do with race, just laws and lawyers as in the Casey trial.

Agreed, although I think Martin was too draconian, he even tried to reduce the old age benefits but public opposition actually stopped that one. The point is IMO, the provinces are being blamed for what Martin did, and we know for sure if Harper did anything anywhere near as draconian he'd be pilloried.

Just google it, his liver probably did him in. I suppose this will blossom into another conspiracy theory LOL -
News of the World Whistleblower Found Dead

He did have health problems from drinking and drugs so it's possible he either accidentley ODd, or it was suicide. -
Martin cut Federal transfers in total by around $5.8 billion (among other things). Ontario wasn't the only province to have do close hospitals and so on and the provinces took the blame for for draconian health care cuts. Don't forget that Harris inherited an $11.2-billion deficit from Bob Rae in 1995, and Harris achieved a balanced budget in 1999. Because the provinces actually got their hands dirty by laying off nurses and closing hospitals etc., the people blamed Mike Harris more than Paul Martin. Martin’s cuts over years cost Ontario (and other provinces) billions of dollars in funding for health care and social programs. So actually, Martin balanced his budget by downloading the federal deficit onto the provinces, then blamed Harris for the problems that created. Talk about hypocrisy.
-
Agree with that, and people seem to forget that Martin balanced the budget by drastically cutting health care and education payments (among other things). While Harris is blamed for cutbacks, the reason they had to do it was because of Paul Martin.

They don't need to pin anything onto McGuinty, it's all there in black and white. What exactly has Hudak said he will do to public education other than this, which seem okay to me. Enhanced Use of Phonics: Greater emphasis on phonics as a basis for literacy and enhanced training and support for teachers in its use. High School Exit Exams: Work with the Education Quality and Accountability Office to introduce province-wide high school exit exams to provide more information to parents, students and post-secondary institutions. Financial Literacy: Make economic and financial literacy a mandatory part of the high school curriculum. Fair and Accurate Grading: Eliminate unfair pressure on teachers to make sure students pass even if the student is unwilling or unable to complete the work. I've never been in favour of a voucher system as proposed by John Tory last election, but recent ongoing events in Toronto suggest that they may be needed.

Zealots such as Thibodeau only help to exacerbate the divide. He won't get away with it on any other airline, A/C actually offers more bilingual service than any other airline and I think they are the only airline that has to doso, probably because they get gov't money. Strange though, 80% of Canada speaks English, yet 50% of AC's flight attendants speak French., how does that work, especially when he was actually served in French which I guess wasn't good enough for him.

Pickering a ‘prime location’ for new airport: Transport Canada
scribblet replied to Shwa's topic in Local Politics in Canada
I'm all for it too, but if you think it's going to be a big storm now, you must not have been around the first time Homes and land were expropriated, but the opposition was so great the plans were deferred. Many of the same protesters are still there so are gearing up to do battle again. -
Huh.... my point is, that in his words, he's complaining that his own opinions and values were carefully strained out - which is as it should be. Something he evidently doesn't want.
-
His own words, can't be much clearer.

It seems to me that CTV where trying to keep the news impartial, but this guy doesn't like that, no, he wants to colour his reports with his own ideology. Maybe the Star will take him on, but after he slagged his employer like that he may not be employable.

Poor Baby who no one has ever heard of outside of Quebec. He quits in a narcissistic hissy fit because he can't promote his own left wing views, heaven they should be filtered, even the poor babies tweets - I guess the idea of impartiality in the news is a conundrum to him. LOL

Zekes Exempt From Motor Cycle Helmet In Ontario
scribblet replied to flemingetq's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
http://archive.safety-council.org/info/traffic/helmets.html All Canadian provinces have universal motorcycle helmet laws. So, surely if one group wishes to be exempt from Canadian law, they should also be exempt from health care coverage for any treatment required resulting from a bike accident. -
Did she? Do you have a link to the actual final document where she says that, the final doc. doesn't have the same hyperbole. I thought it went something like this: " The evidence that we saw suggests that this was done for matters of expediency. We have no evidence to suggest that it was a deliberate attempt to mislead"

Keep stretching - no smoking gun War crimes evidence hard to find

I don't live in Toronto, but I think the reasoning is that should (and it's likely) the province stop paying for this in the future and or download costs back to the City, the City will be on the hook for $170,000 a year. So, if Ford where still Mayor and axed the jobs, he would be portrayed as an unthinking (put your epitaph here) for getting rid of people who help poor people with HiV etc. etc.
-
It wasn't a billion, it was 630 million, too much for even two summits I agree. However, the RCMP is only considering this as they are obligated to assess a complaint, so far the decision has not been made to do so. Don't forget, these allegations where made by a Liberal MP and considering the AG said there does not seem to be any illegality here, one wonders why the RCMP would bother going ahead with. (if they do).

Strange that a group purporting to be peaceful wants to bring down a blockade which, in doing so, would allow Hamas to smuggle arms into Gaza with which to attack and make war on Israel. Their intention of course is to provoke Israel. If these people get into trouble should the Canadian gov't help them out - IMO - not a chance, if they get themselves into it, they can get themselves out of it.

"NDP prepares to drop 'socialism' reference"
scribblet replied to a topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It didn't pass, it was held off, partly I think because of the Trotskyist Barry Weisleder Tricky tricky, if they want to expand their base and attract liberals then they have to be open to a wider group of people who don't subscribe to the preamble that says: social, economic and political progress is possible "only by the application of socialist principles" such as state control over the production and distribution of goods and services. so, if the NDP wants to appeal to a larger segment of Canadians they will have to move away from this IMO, even Pat Martin, the NDP attack dog wanted to remove it.
