I don't dispute that there is a lot of control but the state does not own the companies. They have a stock market where you can buy shares in Chinese companies if you want. It is not a communist system, it's a Chinese system. Canada is not attempting to do the same thing.

Companies need some sort of certainty before they spend hundreds of millions planning a project only to have it bogged down in turf wars and frivolous court cases. If nothing else an agreement like this might allow them to walk a way before they waste a ton of money for nothing.

We aren't the only ones who have those things. Projects need to be economically viable otherwise there is no point.

NATO was formed in 1949 and until Putin invaded Ukraine, there have been no European wars, the longest period of peace in European history. NATO is a defensive alliance, members are under no obligation to go to war unless one of the members is attacked. Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands and Belgium were all neutral at the beginning of WW2 but that didn't stop Hitler from invading all of them. It didn't stop Putin from invading Ukraine either. Switzerland and Sweden were more useful to Hitler as neutrals, the only reason he didn't invade them as well. Your lack of historical knowledge is really quite pathetic.

Putin is the result of Russians having no experience with democracy. Many of them yearn for the return of the Soviet Union. Do you think there should have been a Marshal Plan for Russia? Do you think Russia should have had a US military government for several years after the end of the Cold War? There was no Western effort other than Russia being able to access and take advantage of western expertise and capital investment. Russians put Putin in power, no one else.
