The carbon tax is going up and so are emissions
Aristides replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Interesting take from the world's largest car builder. https://electrek.co/2024/03/01/toyota-says-it-would-rather-buy-credits-than-waste-money-on-evs/ -
Not insinuating anything, I have a police officer in my family as well. As far as housing goes, military personnel can end up making multiple moves with no say in the matter so they are unable to use their residence as an investment, unlike the average Joe. For instance, someone in the Navy can be moved from Halifax where housing is relatively inexpensive to Esquimalt next to Victoria where housing is just as expensive as Vancouver.

Police officers spend 12 hrs a day dealing with society's worst and probably see a lot more carnage than the average service person who is not actually in combat situations. They also make more money. I looked up the pay rates for our police force. 5th class constable (starting), just over $72K. First class constable (after 3 years), just under $122K. First responders also have a much higher rate of PTSD and suicide than the general population which the "cops don't cry" macho environment hasn't helped. No doubt that's a problem in the military as well.

Even if these helicopters don't carry missiles it seems rather short sighted not to give them the capability. As for frigates being too small to carry them, the Type 26's are far larger than the Halifax class ships they are replacing. The CP-140 may not carry missiles but the P-8 that is replacing them can carry Harpoon anti ship missiles.

No one gets a maximum sentence for anything in this country.

Interesting interview with the US ambassador to China. He said China is a far bigger threat than the USSR ever was. The Soviets had a strong military but a crap economy. The same goes for Russia. China has both military and economic power.
-
Ya, I don't get that either. There will be times when the ship is too far away to respond in time and any action will have to be taken by the helicopter.
-
I'm not qualified to comment on its capabilities which may be considerable, just that we have spent a lot of time and money to saddle ourselves to an orphan. However, if you say it isn't capable of carrying anti shipping missiles that seems like a major oversight if we were planning on others to buy it. Seems to me that these days a frigate's helicopter is just as likely to be doing things like chasing Somali pirates and Houthis as hunting subs. A couple of Hellfires would make it a lot more intimidating than just being able to watch. I remember the first action I heard about in the Falklands war was a Lynx helicopter from a frigate or destroyer taking out an Argentine patrol boat with a missile.

Well do you? -
All the Scandinavian countries and Finland have conscription. As does Switzerland.

Tucker's Interview With Putin

Do you think Tucker actually goes grocery shopping? -
If lowering the GST was such a bad idea, why hasn’t Trudeau raised it again? He’s had eight years.

What facilities do we have to build the Cyclone? What expertise do we have in building ASW helicopters?

Putin just wants as much of Ukraine as he can gobble up.

Harper defence spending peaked in 2009 at 1.38% and then declined to .99% in 2014. https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/CAN/canada/military-spending-defense-budget

We are the only customer. Who else was showing interest in this machine? Other countries form partnerships to develop these systems before they go out on a limb to build them. We have a small military and can't afford to play these games.
-
There are very good reasons to buy machines that are in common with our allies. Basically that is the reason the present government had to eat crow and order the F-35. Yes we got what we got and the extra expense of operating a small quantity of a unique type will drag on the defence budget for decades.

If we want subs that can operate year round in the arctic, they will pretty well have to be nukes. Sweden has some AIP subs but they are very slow when just operating on the Stirling engine and quite small. Basically designed for use in the Baltic.

It was only desperate because of how long it took and it was caused by a political party putting its short term political interests ahead of the military's needs. The EH-101 was cancelled 21 years ago and we still haven't received the final two CH-148. Who ever thought it was a wise idea to own 28 unique machines for which we would have to eat all the development and upgrade costs as well as the production of parts that are unique to these machines? Is it so superior to every other navy's ASW helos the we were justified in going our own route? Basically it is a mini example of what would have happened if we had gone ahead with the Arrow without any export orders.

Do you think Putin is part of a conspiracy to enrich western arms companies?
