  1. I don't think math can be learned in a single evening on wikipedia. Yes, if you already know it and need to jump back for a refresher on one topic then it might help, but you are not going to be able to put it into practice without the practice (even if you knew it before). Things like simplifying in algebra might come back quickly, but do you remember the quadratic formula and would you be able to put it into practice today? Can you still solve trigonometry problems with a table or even a calculator? Certainly if you want to spend some time researching a single problem then yes today's resources make that possible, but is it efficient if you have many problems to solve.
  2. Yes, certainly that has some merit. It does seem to clash with other unhealthy activities like smoking, which many people use to control their weight. I don't think there is a universal solution, but yes weight could be one indicator to look at. There is certainly a range of weight that is somewhat healthy for an individual based on gender, height, etc. Perhaps anyone in that range has a zero deductible on healthcare, and outside that range you pay a deductible of $1 per kilogram squared (or perhaps to the 1.5 or something) to make it a logarithmic curve. Yes, underweight people need to cough up as well. I will give some example of overweight (same would apply to underweight by same amount) based on the BMI range for my age/sex/height rounded to the nearest $1. The other metric that might be better is % body fat. If we assume I weighed the following, here are the deductibles I would pay with the kg squared formula: 135 lbs to 182 lbs (ie. within range) - $0 190 lbs - $13 200 lbs - $67 210 lbs - $161 220 lbs - $297 230 lbs - $474 240 lbs - $692 250 lbs - $951 If anyone thinks that ratio is too high here is kg to the power of 1.5: 135 lbs to 182 lbs (ie. within range) - $0 190 lbs - $7 200 lbs - $23 210 lbs - $45 220 lbs - $72 230 lbs - $102 240 lbs - $135 250 lbs - $171
  3. If we are talking about targeted tax, then how about we use the proceeds to make healthier food choices cheaper. Fresh produce seems to be creeping up much faster than anything else. Yes, some of that has to do with the season but even in season things are out of hand. This past fall the prices of apples seemed to be unusually high, during the summer the hothouse tomatoes seemed to be the cheapest ones and now everything is way too expensive. This should extend to prepared foods as well. I remember the days when if you wanted a cheap lunch you went for the soup & salad, now these seem to be the most expensive items on the menu.
  4. Yes, even for the Netherlands that is good turnout in recent years (it has been averaging about 75%). They did mange to do 86 in '86 however. The Netherlands used to have compulsory voting, but abolished it in 1967. One interesting finding is that after they abolished it the share to minor and extreme parties was reduced.
  5. Your right wing colleges are telling me that 2/3rds of Canadians want the death penalty. I guess they are more like Muslims than you think.
  6. How many major air force bases do the Americans operate out of Alaska? At least 2, possibly 3. They also have major airports there along with coast guard stations. Where do we have to fly out of? Cold lake is in the southern half of Alberta, barely north of Edmonton.
  7. That is probably an issue for commercial jets, but does it apply to fighter jets? Regardless, a fighter jet should have a lot more thrust than is necessary for takeoff because it needs the speed and acceleration for combat maneuvers; the thrust:weight ratio is much higher. While the thrust to engine weight ratio can be similar (make sure that is not what you compare), the thrust to airplane weight ratio is about 150% to 300% in fighter jets compared to airliners.
  8. How about a partial tax refund on gym memberships so that this does not become yet another benefit to the rich and the poor people can become unhealthy. In fact most of these tax breaks should be at the same percentage for everyone, and not next to zero refund for the poor. Why does Argus get his gym membership cut more in half from the government (he claims he pays 53%), where other less well off people get back only a few dollars?
  9. Maybe we can strive to go down to 'InfoWars' level, and then we will become Trump advisors.
  10. No, its more like the competition are carrying guns aimed directly down.
  11. Why not doughnuts, and the many other sources of unhealthy carbohydrates including simple sugars. How about putting a tax on body fat?
  12. I too wanted to get into the Guide hut when I was 17. --- On a serious note, yes this is discrimination and should be criticized. Thomas appears to want to join the Guiding program because the activities appeal to him. Now there are some practical considerations, just like when girls joined Scouting groups. First is there should be male leaders as well, just like it was important to have female leaders in scout groups to accommodate girls wanting to join. This group says it was for 14-26 year olds so we wouldn't need the same ratio as younger groups. The other side of to consider is how males would change the group, that was in some cases a problem with girls joining scouts in that they didn't want to do the same activities.
  13. No problem, she has already meet PM Trudeau several times.
  14. That's why we have computers. Math is much more than the basic calculations.
  15. Thank you Steve for another winner, it looks like we are stuck with Don Meredith as he refuses to resign from the Senate.

There is a difference between allowing a naked woman sit down next to you to have her picture taken, and grooming young girls to sleep with you. What part of that do you have problems comprehending?

No problem here...just laughing at the double standard for age of consent and political hokey pokey.   Next he will play the race card.    Canada "deserves it".

  16. The problem is that there is no law, this is a motion to study a problem. It is commonly understood, and when asked the MP who introduced this motion clarified. If you read, you will see I am using taxme's words. Perhaps you should address your issue to taxme, and yourself (see below). Except this motion predates the terrorist action in Quebec city - your point is completely false Yes, religious intolerance is an issue and this motion addresses it. The motion only emphasizes Islamophobia because of all the recent issues of Islamic mosques and cultural centres being burned, Muslims being attacked in public, etc. See earlier point on your loving, tolerant responses.
  17. WWII seemed to glorify going to war in the general public, television was a big eye opener. While Canada didn't participate in Vietnam, I think we we also learned a big lesson from it. Unfortunately people have a habit of lashing out on a symbol of what they see wrong, so Soldierophobia grew in the latter and post- Vietnam era. It took many years for people to realize that the soldiers were not the problem (and no I am not excusing those individuals who did step over the line) but that war is a terrible venture. Unfortunately not all lessons are learned equally. It is a good thing that Americans (and Canadians) alike were able to come out and support our troops in Afghanistan (and Iraq, Libya, etc.), even if we did not support the mission. Yes, in Quebec if you use symbols of the church to express your discontent then you are far more foul than using the F word, etc. These profanities are known as sacres, probably even more common (at least amongst the older generation) than tabarnak is sacrament. Of course they could be combined as in the ever favourite maudit câlisse (damn chalice). Later generations of course don't really find them that offensive, but then later English generations don't find the F word that offensive either.
  18. Today is snow clearing day. They will tow you if you are parked on the wrong side of the street, and I just saw a car hoisted from the front with its back wheels dragging but not spinning. I guess they don't care if you leave the parking break on, just muscle through.

  19. No, it does no such thing. What don't you get here? The motion has absolutely nothing to do with making religion exempt from being criticized or questioned. You need to think before you speak, because it doesn't appear to be working for you.
  20. What is wrong with celebrating your heritage? Are you going to walk into a bar tomorrow and tell all those Micks to go back to their homeland?
  21. Which is the entire point of what the Girl Guides are doing. They don't want to get stuck in that situation cause by the travel ban. It was a practical and correct decision to make.
  22. Our effeminate politician can beat the shyte out of the US macho man. Perhaps the real difference is Canadians are comfortable in their skin, and Americans need to pretend to be something else. Canadians are open and accepting, and Americans are closed and demurring. Of course stereotypes are not worth the bits they are printed with. Canada has many close minded people and America has many open minded ones as well. In fact America did not choose the macho man, the skewed electoral college did.
  23. M-103 doesn't ask for any more rights, but you assume some false allegation is going to further your cause.
  24. and you should not try to force the rest of us Canadians to give you more rights than anyone else.
