  1. They got a headstart on vaccine distribution. And we're about where the US is regarding first dose vaccination. But some states like New York and California that aren't full of uneducated rubes, the vaccination rate is much higher.
  2. I don't count that. There were 6 weeks in my sleepy burb where things were quite normal. Was able to eat indoors, get my haircut, shop in an actual store. You know, the good life? Perhaps, but not the strictest, which I guess is the problem. If you want to do this right you either have to be willing to suspend human rights and dignity for several weeks (See Europe, Australia and Quebec) OR just not give two shits about the lives of the sick piling up in Hospitals. We laud the US for their results once the Vaccines started to flow. People forget that they were seeing per capita numbers much worse than even India has recently been seeing in January. I suspect once things open up again and a critical mass has been vaccinated, memories will be quite short.
  3. It's oddly refreshing to see people scurry to their default political biased position on the Israeli-Palestine issue. If there's one thing that, more clearly separates, Left from Right, it's this decade long MiddleEast conflict.

  4. Politics are most certainly entering the debate about Ontario's COVID-19 reaction. We're looking at a 2 month Lockdown. That's horrific for businesses. But people are adapting. Restaurants have pivoted their business models and people are making it work and enjoying the improved weather. What I can't get over is the people who screamed that we needed a strict lockdown are now advocating for recreational facilities and golf to be allowed to open. This is just a game now. The guidelines say you shouldn't be socializing with people outside your household, EVEN in an outdoor setting. Who's playing Golf with only people in their own homes!?!??! I can't get a haircut, I can't go to the Hardware store, I can't eat on a patio. But Golf and Tennis Courts are the priority? If Public Health officials want Golf courts to open, I think I can safely ignore your guidelines about not seeing family and friends in outdoor setting. At least DoFo is being consistent about this, if we're supposed to stay home, then you shouldn't be playing Golf. I pray the vaccination numbers see a significant drop in cases in the coming week. We'll have overtaken the US, per capita, in first dose vaccinations this week.
  5. Apparently increasing the supply to "Hotspots" was only to last two weeks. Now vaccine distribution will go back to per capita distribution. Just saw on CP24 that tomorrow everyone in the Province 18+ will be able to book a vaccine. I'd say, largely this vaccine rollout has been a resounding success.
  6. This week, Canada is likely to overtake the US in percentage of citizens receiving at least one-dose of a COVID-19 vaccine

But Canada will never overtake the U.S. in percentage of citizens and non-citizens receiving two doses in the recommended manufacturer and tested interval.

  7. This week 50% of Canadian adults will have received at least one COVID-19 dose. This is only 3 weeks after the US reached this milestone.

But as supply grows, it's still a better strategy.

    3. Shady

It’s a strategy we were forced into.  The United States has vaccinated the equivalent of Canada’s entire population 4 times.

    4. Boges

Yet they still have less than 60% with one-dose. We could see 70% by mid-June.

There's no question the US has/had the supply. The fact that they're wasting so much vaccine is bordering on criminal, considering how much the rest of the world needs it.

  8. This disease will become endemic. With a critical level of people getting vaccinated, more people may get the disease and not even know it, experience no symptoms or mild symptoms. The reason COVID-19 is a Global pandemic is that, where it grabs a foothold, we've seen over and over again an appreciable portion of the population get critically sick. It's happening, in a bad way, right now in India. As the vaccine gets to more people we'll see less of this.
  9. I will say that Hamilton is a more geographically diverse region. There are smaller, more suburban and rural communities that are part of the municipality of Hamilton. Today 55% of new cases came from either Toronto or Peel.
  10. Health Canada approves Pfizer for children 12+. Should children be given first shots before many get their second shots?

Getting 80-90% with 60-90% protection before July doesn't sound desperate to me.

    3. bush_cheney2004

      bush_cheney2004

Then why are Canadians going to the U.S. for covid vaccines ?

    4. Boges

You just keep making the same point. I've conceded it. The US has ensured their supply. Being the #1 economy in the world gets you that.

  11. As of today, all 18+ residents of the Region of Peel, who have the highest per capital infection rate in the Province can book a vaccination through the Online Portal. I guess this will show if Vaccine Hesitancy is an issue here, like it is in the US.
  12. Biden's goal of 70% first-dose vaccination by July 4th is an admission that demand for vaccination will plummet.

Yes, as cases continue to decline rapidly, many will forgo the vaccine for now.  Also, politicians like to set goals the can easily meet, and then claim success.  This is really a non-story.

"Canada probably won't reach herd immunity against COVID-19 anytime soon" (if ever)....no kidding.

From your citation (which is just an opinion column):

      Quote

In the United States, vaccine hesitancy is increasingly seen as a major and perhaps permanent barrier to herd immunity. The vaccine rollout south of the border got off to a fast start but has been slowing as time goes on and the supply of doses starts to outpace demand.

  13. The parameters are set through the Web portal. If you live in a Hotspot Postal Code, you can make an appointment. As May goes on, the people who can book through the portal expands until all adults can book at the end of May.
  14. Not if they really wanted one. BTW with variants, it seems, younger people are just as "vulnerable". Supply has been a big issue. I got a vaccine because I was on top of it as soon as I was able.
  15. Well it wasn't in this thread. I've seen no evidence of any appreciable vaccine hesitancy in Ontario. People in the Hot Spots are lining up at Community Centres to get shots.
  16. Mind doing so again? It's not vaccines that are causing the spread. There are plenty of cultural issues, but I have seen no statistics that say they don't want vaccines.
  17. Multiple Studies: COVID-19 vaccines are very effective after the first dose.

That's probably why I hear a lot of people are saying they aren't going to bother getting the second dose. Oh well.

    3. Boges

      Boges

Because of the influx of vaccines we're seeing now, the chances people will have to wait four months is unlikely.

If/when we get another Shipment of AZ, it should go 100% to provide second doses, as their reliability isn't as solid as Pfizer.

    4. OftenWrong

Let's hope you're right. Vaccinate the masses as quickly as possible, so that the herd is immune.

Then I can get back to my normal life.

  18. I don't think people in those area codes are getting the disease because they refuse to get the vaccines. All adults in Hot Spots can only start booking appointments today. Otherwise they had to wait inline at pop-up clinics.

Regardless, it doesn’t matter if herd immunity is achieved in the fall vs late spring.  Enough people will have been vaccinated or have immunity from being previously infected to result in low level case rates and even lower level death and hospitalization.  This story is just more panic porn.

    4. Boges

      Boges

But are enough people going to get vaccinated? Seems the rate is levelling off in the US.

I think the variants will play a factor in how effective previous infections protects one.

Up until recently it was agreed upon that most young people will handle COVID-19 rather well, in most cases. Variants have blown that theory out of the water.

  20. Peel, York and Toronto regularly record 50%+ of the daily cases and Hospitals in those regions, are the ones being buried. On Friday, Dofo announced that for the next 2 weeks, 50% of the vaccine supply will go to these "hot spots" Ontario also announced, yesterday, that adults 18+ will be able to book a vaccine through the Web portal. Ontario will see an influx of Pfizer and Moderna in the coming month. They'll also lower the age limit for the Rest of the Province to book an appointment by a decade per week. I think it's 50+ this week, 40+ the week after, 30+ the week after that and by May 2-4 all adults in the province will be able to book a vaccine appointment.
  21. Ontario pledges to allow all adults to be able to book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment by the 3rd week of May.

Herd Immunity by Canada Day is likely.

    1. Boges

2-3 million doses expected each week in May. 3 million plus expected in June.

  22. Study: Transmission of COVID-19 is half as likely with one-dose of the vaccine. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-56904993

One dose probably makes milder symptoms as well.

    2. Boges

      Boges

It certainly does. But this is the first study it indicate you're less likely to transmit the virus even with only dose.

More evidence that getting as many people the first dose is more important than getting people fully vaccinated.

      bush_cheney2004

More evidence of excuses for Trudeau's epic vaccine failure.

  23. I wonder if people in Germany, Spain, Italy and France are freaking out that Canada is beating them in vaccination.

    1. Argus

      Argus

      Since we're not... no.

Canada is only giving one dose four months apart. No one in the world is waiting four months for a second dose and there's little science behind that decision.

    2. Boges

      Boges

Getting the most number of people some protection is better than getting half that number full protection.

    3. Boges
  24. This is actually going to be a big problem in the US. They have a sufficient supply of vaccines but still haven't reached Herd Immunity because people don't want to get them. If it's true that people in Hot Zones are largely spreading this through workplaces, you can easily see vaccination being a requirement for employment.
