Understanding MAGA psychology
SpankyMcFarland replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
MAGA fans take obvious pleasure in Trump’s transgressive acts. The traditional virtues of conservatives - frugality, restraint, prudence, respect for the rule of law - have all been thrown overboard as antiquated hogwash they never really believed in anyway. -
Zohran Mamdani
SpankyMcFarland replied to Nationalist's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It is baffling that the anti-Mamdani crowd couldn’t find a better candidate than a disgraced, elderly former governor. Talk about tired, discredited elites. -
We need to do both where appropriate and play for time. If the tariffs spike inflation or the rare earth conflict with China leads to a full-blown manufacturing/financial crisis then Trump is probably going to have to be less belligerent with us. There isn’t a huge constituency down there that wants an economic war with Canada esp. if more pressing issues have to be addressed.

Why Are We Doing This U.S. Vs. Canada Thing?
SpankyMcFarland replied to Zeitgeist's topic in Canada / United States Relations
America doesn't want an EU-style arrangement with fixed rules and rights for each country. They don’t like to play a game they don’t run.- 223 replies

Donald Trump's a Dictator Because...
SpankyMcFarland replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Prove it in a court of law? The DOJ is run by servile minions under his explicit orders while the Supreme Court loves the idea of unchecked presidential authority. Only an authoritarian would deny that America has been moving rapidly in that direction since Trump took office. -
Cartels Are Being Dismantled
SpankyMcFarland replied to gatomontes99's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I’m afraid what you’re saying isn’t the case about drugs like cocaine and even opioids. They are seen by many people as part of having a good time these days. That’s the depth of our problem. And I can assure you that killing a few low level people under extremely dubious legal authority isn’t going to change anything, no matter how much you would like to think it would. It’s theatre of a particularly grotesque sort. Check back with me when Trump and Co. have finished the job and the cartels are gone. -
Carney’s changing tactics against Trump get the benefit of the doubt from most Canadians at the moment because they understand our country is under grave threat from without. It’s not easy when a powerful friend suddenly turns against you. If the Tories were in charge we would have the same response to rally round the flag and trust the government to do the best it can. I really don’t think now is the time for Poilievre to go hyper-partisan. He needs to be seen to be playing with the team. There are ways to look good in opposition during a national crisis but he seems to lack the subtlety and versatility to play those roles.

Canadian - a form of psychosis
SpankyMcFarland replied to paxamericana's topic in Canada / United States Relations
At the moment xenophobia is entirely justifiable given your country’s disgraceful actions against its closest friend. You just don’t get how we feel right now. -
One answer as to why she came back is that she was too young to know the difference. That’s one of the many problems for him and I’d be very surprised if she was the only victim. Charles and Co. must be expecting more revelations which is why they’ve stripped him of some titles but they’ve still let him stay on in extraordinary luxury. The obnoxious brat should be chucked out on his ear and told to support himself. He has been terrible for the monarchy’s reputation all his adult life. Imagine if Andrew was the first-born. He could be our king now. This system is not fit for purpose any more. Canada needs to be able to control the position of head of state and not just wanly hope that the former Mother Country does the right thing when faced with scandal.

It’s a question of sovereignty. When BP told the Iranians they were getting great value for their oil with BP doing all the mining and refining, the Iranians said we can do better because we own the basic resource and we can get other people in. That’s not an option NL has been allowed in Canada.

It’s natural for any province to seek the best deal it can get. Danny Williams is convinced that Quebec is under pressure too. Here is his take on the deal: https://www.saltwire.com/newfoundland-labrador/letter-former-nl-premier-danny-williams-pens-letter-to-pm-on-churchill-falls-mou And here is a response: https://www.saltwire.com/newfoundland-labrador/andrew-parsons-churchill-falls-mou Our own power lines across Quebec would be nice to have no question but provinces have been given great leeway in these matters to control their territory. Mr Williams’s credibility is severely constrained by his own mistakes with Muskrat Falls, a project that almost ruined the province.

In this instance I leave my gay, vegan, climate-shilling, Soros-loving, radical, Marxist lunatic cap to one side and contend that the economic problems of the US long predate the current incumbent of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. America’s debt has been ballooning for decades and is becoming a major global issue. Every time there are big bankruptcies stateside we have to wonder, is this the moment of truth? So far, so, well, OK. However, there has been an uptick of worry in recent weeks with the failure of two auto companies. This has caught the eye of Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England: https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/bank-englands-bailey-says-first-brands-tricolor-collapses-may-be-warning-worse-2025-10-21/

The Chinese plan to conquer Russia.

You won’t be left alone. That’s not how the world is. You will need friends and allies to counter China and at the moment you are losing those friends rapidly. -
Carney doubles down on his anti-Israel rhetoric

You are clearly anti-Catholic. You prove that every day with your deranged ravings here. -
Cartels Are Being Dismantled
SpankyMcFarland replied to gatomontes99's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Many cocaine and opioid users are not visibly addicted and staggering around city streets. They are working all around us in factories, boardrooms, courts and hospitals. https://vancouversun.com/entertainment/sleep-country-vancouver-co-founder-documents-fight-against-crack-addiction-in-memoir Incredibly, these drugs are seen as recreational options now. Coke and similar drugs have been normalized. Involuntary commitment raises all sorts of issues, including cost. Have you costed this and does that fit with your plans for a low tax country? Bear in mind that Americans who suffer regular psychiatric illness can’t get a bed for more than a few days - the system is already stretched way beyond breaking point. I would be prepared to pay higher taxes for the many more beds required to treat addiction in Canada but I’d say I’m in a minority there. Actually, there are some encouraging signs in the US that fentanyl deaths are falling. I’m not even going to bother discussing harm reduction here in any detail but it has had some success. In my opinion. Again do you really believe that Reagan etc etc didn’t try their damnedest to stop the drug trade? And that was before the Americans were dealing with a supplier like China that doesn't have to play by their rules at all and certainly won’t allow its sovereignty to be violated. Going after the cartels has its place - the way the banks were allowed to launder their money and get a slap on the wrist for it is outrageous - but people need to talk more loudly about demand too. I just don’t hear that from politicians to the same degree. The story told is that it’s someone out there, the drug dealer, who is entirely to blame. That’s just not true in this trade. -
Understanding MAGA psychology
SpankyMcFarland replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Basically, it’s the psychology of the tribe. We’re all vulnerable to its siren call and each generation has to rise above it. -

The Republicans are in a tricky spot. They had to bring Smith in for questioning to please their master but that may end up revealing a lot more about why he brought charges against Trump in the first place. Putting him on TV would not be a good move. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5555032-gop-rep-jordan-blasts-smith/

Carney doubles down on his anti-Israel rhetoric

You claim Carney is sectarian. So why is your weird anti-Catholic rhetoric ok? I feel like I’m delivering out-patient psychiatric care here. -
The Chinese plan to conquer Russia.
SpankyMcFarland replied to paxamericana's topic in The Rest of the World
Russia was able to do that before it attacked Ukraine for no good reason. The problem goes back to Yeltsin’s tragic decision to appoint Putin as prime minister to avoid the risk of criminal charges for his gross corruption. China is in a different category. America needs real allies to assist there and at the moment it’s antagonizing everybody. -
Zelensky hits the nail on the head with these darkly amusing remarks about Putin’s Russia:
