Most of them are pretty ignorant. They figure we can just build a few more windmills and solar farms and presto. All done! That these now produce well under 1% of the world's energy - and that there's a reason for that, are well beyond their ability to think logically.2 points

Where does it say that? It says "frustrated locals". Cite something that says it's Sons of Odin or Proud Boys who took the barricades down. Be careful - I know one of the people in that picture and they are NOT affiliated with either of those groups.2 points

If by these people you mean the so-called hereditary Wet'suwet'en chiefs, you could be right. However, as Chief Clarence Louie of the Okanagan band has proven, there are FNs who are well able to run profitable businesses. With the help of others on his reserve he turned a failing community into a shining example of what FNs can do when they take the time to learn good business practices, put them in place and insist that meetings are held on time - not on Injun Time as he is fond of stating. The bands that want to buy the TM line are also well versed in business economics and their reserves are also well run. Unfortunately, many reserves fail to realize that this is the 21rst century and subsistence living has only exacerbated their problems. Until those bands realize that the way forward, the only way forward for remote communities lies with resource extraction, they will continue to be dependent upon the government for handouts.1 point

Personally I don't buy the idea that Putin and the Russians prefer Trump in the White House. If you look at the overall picture from Putin's perspective, the Russians are much better off with the Democrats, especially if you consider who the Democratic front runners have been. I'm thinking of Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Bernie Sanders in the present. A lot of money came from the Russians to the Clinton Foundation up until the time she lost the election to Trump. Not surprisingly, the contributions dropped off significantly after November 2016. It sure looks like "pay to play" doesn't it? Clearly the evidence suggests the Russians were hoping to get Hillary to the White House. https://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/clinton-foundation-donations/ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6432065/Clinton-Foundations-income-plummeted-Hillary-lost-2016-election.html As for the current front runner Bernie Sanders, how could the Russians not possibly be thrilled at the prospect of this socialist crackpot being President? Bernie's admiration for Communist dictatorships has been well known for many years now. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/bernie-sanders-praised-communist-cuba-and-the-soviet-union-in-the-1980s This Putin/Trump conspiracy is nonsense.1 point

It's not about Trump the man, his virtue means nothing if the US pays them accordingly. It's more about they oppose the US exceptionalism he represents. Of course you wouldn't consider that, since the left has put a blanket over your head.1 point

Uh huh. And what action has he taken to cause you to think this? A few days ago he said the rail blockades were 'unacceptable'. And then did nothing. Now he's said they must come down. But he also hasn't done anything. Where are these testicles you so admire?1 point

Your words reflect self-entitlement and living in a bubble perceptions. Had you lived in a shit hole of a country you would know better. This country is molded together by many people-many who do not fit your narrow definition of an acceptable white person-you use Kadr as a platform to spew hatred about all Canadians. Kadr reflects one person-himself just as your words reflect one person-yourself. You referring to anyone or anything as shit simply reflects your own self-loathing perception projected through externalization.1 point

This is just a meme that is equally applicable to the greedy. They also fail to appreciate other people's needs. What do you mean by a fringe, a couple hundred people or 15 million? And what about radical? According to much of the right wing these days the Democratic Party is a party of radical extremists that's some 160 million or more people strong. You have some nerve talking about naive people. No, Canada has to negotiate a treaty. 1st Nations are not a special interest and neither are millions of Canadians who are concerned about the environment. Your dismissiveness is precisely why barricades are up. Everyone knows full well the country can't operate like this. Do you think that would make a good opening argument around the treaty table? Let me know how that works.1 point

In response to Army Guy. As you know Armed Guy, the constitution is a mix of oral protocols, case law precedents that are now followed by courts, statutes such as the Constitution Act, treaties with native communities the British government signed with these communities prior to Canada's coming into existence but were inherited and recognized as being inherited by our Canadian legal system. Add to that we have a constitutional framework that created a constant legal dynamic or tension between the provinces and federal government over jurisdiction to implement laws and a second tension between the federal government and a parallel government of the indigenous peoples. Then we added a Charter of Rights which now creates yet another tension which now enables individuals to push their individual rights in as wide an application as the law will allow it thanks to the Supreme Court of Canada. So bottom line, you have provs, hundreds of indigenous nations, and now individuals all fighting for more rights coming to court with ambiguous doctrines and legal precedents that don't help matters as they can be argued any way you feel like it. Then of course to top that all off you have an amendment formula which makes amending any constitutional law damn near impossible. You would need unanimous consent from all provinces, the feds and the entire nation of nations constellation to change any constitutional doctrine. Welcome to Canada. Uh yah it can be a friggin mess Army at least from a legal perspective. You bloody well may as well expect a Charter challenge on anything and everything to do with enforcing any legal power by any government and because of that, politicians trying to avoid making any decisions that could trigger such a challenge...and so we have what I call Charter syndrome a fear factor that is behind almost every damn political issue of the day and I would suggest not withstanding Trudeau. is a problem any fed or prov leader will now face not just with native peoples but all individuals. For many Canadians its a source of complaint, doomsday scenarios and annoyance at not forcing laws onto people who are considered whiners.I get that sentiment that we now have a nation of self entitled victims all seeking compensation and no one wanting to take responsibility for their own lives but instead demand the governments do it for them. Some believe the ultimate conclusion to all this is soldiers. When all else fails, throw in the soldiers or police. Throw you guys out to do what? We can't take advantage of our freedom to discuss anything and solve anything we want, so we throw you guys out? Oh phack that. My perspective Army is Ivolunteered in a country of constant war and violence and travelled to many others with the same violence or serious problems that make ours seem so trivial.I gratefully live in Canada with all the freedoms most people in the world could never imagine having let alone natural resources most people can't even fathom and the people born here whine and whine and whine over disagreements that grade schoolers could settle if they wanted to. Excuse my rejection of those sentiments of those who think you solve everything by sending out soldiers to do your dirty work. For me this is nothing more than lizard politicians trying to preserve their own fiefdoms of power. They have lost touch with their constituents. I appreciate the impatience of people. I do. I am not snot nosing the anger they may have. I just don't think throwing our army or police out is a remedy. In a democracy its painfully slow to make changes in a civil manner. Dougie is right you can have a guy make trains run on time but what else does that leader bring? To this day I hear, Mussolini made the trains run on time... Hitler was efficient you have to hand him that.. he made his trains run on time. Yah they did. Then again in Jamaica you ask someone, what time is the bus or plane coming and they simply say, SOON COME MAN SOON COME and that could mean an hour, a day, who the phack knows. Thanks given the choice of sittin in the shade waiting or having some angry man goose step in my face... I will take the former not the latter. It may be slow but a train running on time don't mean much to me especially when that train is headin to some destination of extinction. Not the greatest of answers but heartfelt.1 point

The company consulted for 5 years then signed a deal. The 20 elected bands and 8 hereditary bands accepted it. Then 5 hereditary chiefs freak out so it gets torn up? This precedent screws good-faith negotiations with all FN bands because now, *no* deal is final, and signatures don't mean a thing. Ellis Ross@ellisbross I was able to address a lotta issues in my time as Chief and Council but The tearing apart of Canada is something thats got me stumped. The foreign$$$/the slick campaign/ plus the smart organizers are brilliant at getting Canadians to shut down Canada1 point

These people are clueless and naive about how to run businesses, industry, and society as a whole. Now “chiefs” are setting the terms. What a sad state of affairs for this country. Can’t get anything done. A bunch of whiny layabout dependents are shutting down the economy and making shrill, stupid demands. We need emergency measures. Toss out the blockade terrorists and all discussions. Trudeau should resign or the Governor General should dissolve Parliament. Incompetent and weak.1 point

Well...almost, eh? Nuclear is out...so let's redo Bonanza. Life on the Ponderosa was pretty sweet. I seriously doubt some posters fully understand what happens when one turns on the hot water for the morning shower. And if they do have an inkling, I'm pretty sure they don't have anything to replace it with other than Greta's hopes and wishes. The key to advancing Civilization remains in birth control...not cutting ourselves off of energy like we're trying to quit smoking.1 point

It is leading to unprecedented name calling by both sides. I live near this action...trust me, these yahoos do NOT long for the days when the Haida used to arrive like a pack of Vikings to take heads and slaves. They want central heating, big trucks and all that goes along with Western Civilization. Thus why they actually voted FOR the natural gas pipeline access... These 'hereditary chiefs' are pretty much of traditional ruling families...you know...nobles...Kings as it were...and the Birkenstockers that support them because protests are fun. The Mohawks...never miss a good opportunity to flex their muscles...and remind everybody that they're better armed than the Canadian military.1 point

Betsy there are some good ethical companies and good scientists out there working with indigenous communities balancing environmental concerns with a way to get natives employed and get work for many others. They get drowned out by others. It's hard to keep track although Mo and Zei and Scrib on the other thread covered it a bit. I know some people are fed up with PC b.s. All I can say is it's a damn political quick sand of a mess. It can suck you in real good and smother you with emotional rhetoric and legal paradoxes. I still think sanity will prevail and this will resolve itself soon. When the railroad was first built it was literally an explosive exercise. A lot of people blew up carrying that nitro each step of the way towards building the tracks that became the foundation of our country. I suspect that analogy when dealing with this issue. You move to fast and boom..but it will get done. You can not stop the trains.1 point

He doesn't "fear Islam". He's using common sense. Saudi Arabian imams have been sent all over the world to preach their special brand of hate.
