The real question will be how will trump mess with things? There is a very real possibility he could jump in part way through a leadership or election campaign and make a statement like  "Carney? I've heard bad things, we wouldn't deal with him" or the like about ANY of the prospects including PP if he felt like it and completely influence the direction of the leadership or election campaign.

I think a public Trump endorsement of PP could be dangerous for the Tories. Poilievre could then be painted as a foreign puppet.

We send four million barrels of oil a day to the US at below world price. Trump says he doesn't need it so maybe we should find out.

Trump may not need it, but the American working and middle class do, especially when prices skyrocket across the board.

Sure it could. And that's just a start, that's the easy obvious one if you're trying to disrupt the Canadian government and keep it off its feet. There's a dozen things he could say which would even be more disruptive and less easy to solve.

His goal appears to be to destabilize Canada for a purpose. Almost certainly as a negotiating technique because he wants something and we don't know what that is. So we have to be aware that his ability to create a destabilizing environment for either party or both parties at the same time either in the leadership race or in the actual election is huge right now .

" I will lift the tarrifs tomorrow if the cpc wins!L"   Imagine the headlines and response from the libs.

"If whomever becomes prime minister agrees to guarantee us unlimited first priority over all oil AT  A PRICE WE SET then the tarrifs are gone, otherwise we put a 50 percent tarrif on alberta's oil" Imagine the shite show that would blow up in the middle of an election.  The argument over what the best thing to do is would be huge, and leaders would be pressed daily to explain and defend their position, that's all the election would be about.

"I can work with whomever leads the liberals and becomes prime minister till the next election, as long as it's not a woman" :)  LOLOL

We are at his mercy right now.

f18's can't go supersonic. Nice idea tho :)

Of course they can.  It is a supersonic fighter capable of speed up to mach 1.8.

But if they’re dropping snake eyes on that flight they’ll need to be subsonic

Really?  I was misinformed then. I understood it to be subsonic in level flight.

I don’t think he know either. He just wants something - anything - to extract from someone else so he can feel like a big boy and impress his followers.  Maybe then his daddy will finally approve of him from beyond the grave.

He’s not some genius doing this as part of some elaborate 4D chess game that we mortals cant comprehend.  He’s doing this because he’s an unstable insecure narcissist who doesn’t know or care about anything other than his own aggrandizement. .

The only subsonic combat planes other than bombers would be dedicated ground attack aircraft like the A10 or F117. There  hasn’t been a subsonic air-air fighter aircraft in RCAF service since the CF-100 which entered service in 1953 and was phased out in the 1960s.

That's not impossible.  Or perhaps he has a list of things he'd "like" and is just going to see what he can get.

It may even be that he's somehow showing off for all the union people he won over, "Hey look i'll punch any country in the face who competes with you guys, even canada and our allies".  THe dems have been very anti free trade over the years. Even obama was, tho harper was having none of his crap and obama already had economic problems so he couldn't pick a fight.

We won't know till he puts his cards down.

You're overthinking it. One does not have to be a 'genius' to be a bully.  He may very well have some sort of plan or some sort of end goal. He was mad at trudeau that he didn't get full access to eggs and milk etc last time, it could be as simple as that.

But he has ALWAYS said that the first step is to put the other guy you're negotiating with off his game by creating confusion or  kaos one way or another whenever possible.

U.S. President Donald Trump will not impose his promised tariffs on Canada, Mexico or China on his first day in office, according to multiple U.S. reports, giving this country something of a reprieve, at least for now.

Trump, who was sworn in as president just after noon on Monday, has been reviewing three options: a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, a 10 per cent tariff on goods from all countries or an escalating tariff that starts low and rises over time, according to Canadian officials.

A Trump administration official confirmed to Reuters that Trump will hold off for now and instead direct agencies in a memo to "investigate and remedy persistent trade deficits and address unfair trade and currency policies by other nations."

Tariffs on Canada would increase the price of energy for most Americans.

He seems to think imposing Tariffs would be like an external revenue agency where he can tax other countries. That's not how tariffs work.

I have a feeling that he is doing this to enrich himself and others, since the Government collects all the tariff money.

Not 'will be'.  May be.  Just as he suggested he'd do it his first day in office 'maybe'. He's keeping people guessing, he's playing games.

It was an off the cuff remark. If he was serious he would have said it in his speech.

He had all this immigration stuff locked and loaded for day 1 but not the tariffs. When was the last time he mentioned Canada as a 51st state?

I could be proven wrong, but the idea of an External Revenue Service is idiocy. It's not the importers that pay tariffs. Has someone not explained that to him?

I tend to think you're right, but you just never know with him and that's the whole point of why he does this kind of stuff.

The only way he could do it February 1st would be to declare an economic emergency and do it through executive order, and that seems really unlikely and if he was he probably would announce it.  So it seems like a bluff to keep people off guard. but you just never know with him.

It wouldn't have been mentioned at all if a reporter didn't open his stupid yap. Now the media is acting like it's fact and JT has to respond today.

Perhaps this is all for the best, it'll force Canada to diversify its export market.

The challenge is there just isn't a market for us to expand into that would replace what we have with the USA. And worse, Justin has spent the last 10 years mostly weakening our trade relations. We're not going to resolve that quickly.

But without a doubt we need to start down that road. We need to improve trade relations especially with Europe if we can, And we definitely need to get our major products to new markets. We need to sell lNG and other energy to china, japan, and germany and the rest of Europe and as large amounts as we possibly can because that not only brings in money but it also opens trade corridors that are critical to us.

And we desperately need to make it a business friendly environment again here so that companies will come back and invest money and we start providing more value added services and goods.

Hopefully PP will move forward with that

Only Trump is responsible for what comes out of Trump's mouth.

And again it's not a serious proposal. He makes up Trade deficit figures and implies that exporters will pay for tariffs.

I'm almost certain they won't levy tariffs on Oil. That could result in an almost immediate increase in gas prices which is the one kitchen table issue people care about most.

I guess that's why Danielle Smith is going rogue, she wants the oil supply line to continue.

As for manufactured goods, that's the big issue. Canada has an natural advantage for manufacturing due to the cheaper cost for labour, due to universal healthcare and the lower dollar. I don't see how he does this without increasing the price of goods in the US.

And not only that, US firms doing business in Canada will immediately become uncompetitive with the counter tariffs.

I do like how Dofo has leveraged this "crisis" to try and get a third mandate. Prudent polytiking.

Because he's a compulsive liar and thinks bullying is a proper negotiating tactic. Which the entire world, aside from some wilfully blind Americans, is well aware of.
Like WTF kind of total m0ron do you have to be to insist over and over again that other countries simply sell or hand over their sovereign territory? I guess we'll see pretty clear when he announces a peace plan for Ukraine....
