I am Groot Posted January 31, 2025 Report Posted January 31, 2025 The impact of across the board tariffs at 25% has been estimated at a 6 point drop in GDP. Without oil, perhaps 4 points. The impact on the GDP of interprovincial trade barriers has been estimated at between 4 and 7 points. This is the equivalent of a 21% tariff on goods and services moving from province to province. Quebec, naturally, is the worst, at 25%. Largely eliminating these would nullify the economic impact of tariffs. However, no one is going to drop their barriers unless Quebec does and Quebec will threaten to separate before dropping theirs. I am Groot Posted January 31, 2025 Report Posted January 31, 2025 Just now, Aristides said: It wouldn't enter Quebec. The idea for energy east was to eventually get to the Atlantic to send oil to Europe. Yes, it would also feed into Ontario and Quebec, but without an export market the cost is largely not recoverable. At least that is the way I understand it. I know but using the pipe already constructed would avoid having to ship crude to Ontario refineries via a pipeline in the US as it is now. Quote
NAME REMOVED Posted January 31, 2025 Author Report Posted January 31, 2025 (edited) it's somewhat surreal when high ranking Republicans like Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell are pleading with Trump not to impose the tariffs. This will ultimately lead to perhaps the greatest recession since the 1930s Edited January 31, 2025 by DUI_Offender 2 Quote

Gaétan Posted February 1, 2025 Report Posted February 1, 2025 The media keeps spreading Trump's lies. Trump's tariff hike is not caused by drugs or illegal border crossings but because he is trying to increase his revenues to reduce the huge deficit caused by the unnecessary wars that the beloved CBC, that corrupt Democratic regime, has organized to enrich the arms industry and the millions of free bombs sent to Ukraine and Israel. The billion Trudeau spent on guarding the border is money wasted needlessly and he should not buy American drones to replace Chinese drones. It's against journalistic rules to propagate the lies of a recognized liar like Trump because it makes people believe what is not true and it's not an excuse to say that it was others who said that. Of course but they won't bring anywhere near what he thinks. If companies continue to import, prices will rise because of the tariffs. If companies stop importing, he will collect less tariffs. MAGA's ain't too bright though, they think it is a win win. Edited February 1, 2025 by Aristides 1 Quote

LOL, almost all of the Canadians I know near the border come down regularly because the prices are better and they can't get the crap they need in Canada. There is an entire industry along the border with warehouses and shipping post offices for folks in Canada to come across to get stuff with a US mailing address. Quote

And if it stops or at least slows down those people aren't going to be very happy. Maybe they'll have a word with their representatives that things need to go back the way they were. Our depressed dollar has made the US much less attractive and I don't think you understand how really p*ssed off Canadians are at how they are being treated by people they had always assumed were friends. Never underestimate the animosity of a betrayed partner. We are in Mexico and have friends here from Quebec. They say that all the Quebecers they know who have gone to Florida for years and own homes there are trying to dump their properties and leave. The result is a glut of homes on the market and depressed prices for everyone, not just Canadians. 1 Quote
