Thomas has accepted $4M in gifts during career: Watchdog

Supreme Court justices have received nearly $5 million in gifts since the early 2000s, and one justice in particular, Justice Clarence Thomas, accounts for nearly all of it.

Data released Thursday by watchdog group Fix the Court unveils a list of gifts justices have received since January 2004. The dataset was released ahead of an expected release of the justices’ financial disclosure reports Friday.

Thomas, nominated to the high court by former President George H.W. Bush, made headlineslast year after an investigation found he had taken dozens of trips paid for by separate billionaire friends.

According to the data compiled by Fix the Court, since 2004, Thomas has accepted $4,042,286, or 193 gifts. The group reported that, for Thomas, there’s an additional 126 “likely but not confirmed gifts.”

Of the nearly 200 gifts, the group said Thomas only reported 27 of the gifts on his financial disclosures.

…Scalia received the second-highest total in gifts, with $210,164 from Jan. 2004 to his death in 2016.

The list of gifts comes after Democrats called for Justice Samuel Alito to recuse himself from cases related to Jan. 6 and former President Trump currently before the court in light of reports that a “Stop the Steal” flag was flown outside his house after the attack on the Capitol.

Last week, Alito rejected the calls to recuse himself in the cases.

…Alito received the third-most gifts, with $170,095 from his first day on Jan. 31, 2006, to present day, the data said.

"Beyond belief": Clarence Thomas reveals that a GOP megadonor paid for his $500,000 Bali vacation

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accepting luxury vacations — cruises on yachts, private jet flights and accommodations at five-star resorts — from billionaire Harlan Crow for over 20 years, as ProPublica has reported. Now the justice is coming clean, in part, disclosing Friday that a  2019 trip to Indonesia was indeed paid for by in late June was paid for by the Republican megadonor.

As ProPublica noted when it first reported on the trip to Bali, Thomas boarded a private jet for Indonesia, where he and his wife proceeded to island hop for nine days on a 162-foot superyacht with a private chef — a trip that would have cost him over $500,000 had he tried to pay for it himself.

2.  Republican Supreme Court judges are on the take from mega donors fly openly partisan extremist flags, and have batshit crazy conspiracy spouses but Republicans think the only judge who needs to recuse themselves for political bias is Trumps judge because of his daughter’s tweets.

3.  Conservatives lose their shit over Trudeau’s vacations but Republican Supreme Court justices talking millions in gifts and paid half-million dollar vacations is a-ok

They are basically BRIBES to stay on the SCOTUS due to Thomas' desire to make more money.

He actually threatened to resign during the Clinton admin unless he could make more money.

That's when Crow stepped up and started sponsoring Thomas.

Nonsense. Biden was just on TV like 2 days ago insisting that the courts are absolutely impartial and that any decisions they make shouldn't be questioned. He insisted that we respect the court and the process and the decisions. So you're obviously very wrong, even the democrats disagree with you.

What should have been a notable legacy is instead a tarnished tale of corruption. My goodness, what must the other justices think, sitting alongside him with their modest salaries,  knowing that he's bought and paid for.

Time to go.

What is nonsense? Biden’s statements about his trust in the judicial system as a whole don’t exonerate specific crooks and partisan hacks like Thomas, Scalia and  Alito

You raise a point I was saving for another thread: Just goes to show Democrats understand the importance or respecting institution of the judiciary even when Republicans have installed some crooked-as-F hyperpartisan judges

Biden said repeatedly that if Hunter Biden is  convicted of a crime he will have to oney the decision of the courts, serve his sentence and he will not receive a pardon. Contrast that with Republicans’ history of pardoning their criminal buddIes and Trump and his supporters screaming conspiracy, threatening judges, etc.

You think its crooked to accept gifts from a mega donor who has never gotten any benefit from it but it is ok that Sotomayor wouldn't recuse herself when Penguin Random House with whom she has received millions in book deals from.

Alito flies a friggin flag. Clarence Thomas accepts gifts that he disclosed from a friend that has never been before the Supreme Court and he is corrupt. Its headlines for weeks upon weeks.

Sotomayor literally refuses to recuse herself from a case directly involving a publisher who has paid her millions and barely a peep.

We've seen this playbook before. No one is dumb enough to care. But please, keep showing your racism.

"My goodness gracious," he said as he reacted to the polling average, which showed Trump's support among Black voters more than doubled to 22% compared to 2020. Biden, meanwhile, saw a 12% drop, though he still holds a 47-point lead.

They absolutely do.  That was his whole point!  You can't question the motives of a judge just because you don't like them or their rulings, you MUST have faith in the system!!

Sorry but Biden has spoken.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Holy shit kid - didn't you think at all before you said that?   "WE MUST RESPECT THE SYSTEM AND REPUBLICAN JUDGES DON"T DESERVE RESPECT!!!"   LOLOL  Like, would it be asking too much for you to at least split your hypocrisy into TWO sentences?  HAHAHAHAHA!!!  I honestly broke out laughing reading that!!

Well - i guess that's one way of saying you're not really thinking clearly about this without saying it :)

What the judge in new york just pulled was far more corrupt and a direct threat to democracy than anything i've heard of a republican judge doing.

That's because they've already negotiated it behind the scenes and biden will get what he wants. Hunter is going to get a slap on the wrist because he broke actual laws, not some faked up together Franken law designed only for the purposes of removing a political opponent from an election. But it'll be nothing and he will be out making millions peddling his father's influence again in no time at all.

And that is because the democrats are corrupt and so are their judges. Remember when Clinton ran across the tarmac at an airport to jump on the justices plane to "Talk about their grandchildren" and the next day Hillary got off on her charges? Pepperidge farm remembers

It was Lorreta Lynch's plain the AG that was investigating Clinton not the judge because it never got to trial but the rest is correct.

I do remember when the FBI was giving out immunity deals like candy and not getting anything in return.

The democrats ability for hypocrisy is absolutely Olympic. We have seen this many times.

And this is no different, they are arguing against claims that the judge in the trump trial may have had bias by shaming people for daring to question our elected judges and demanding that we have faith in the system and that the system works and anyone who questions that is a terrible person.

Followed by all republican judges are corrupt and we should do something about our corrupt judicial system and the system can't be trusted.

And those viewpoints come about 5 minutes apart.

Today's left wing, people! TA DAAAAA!  Round of applause for these guys, they're here all week.

It has so far but it's kind of hard to say if it will continue to do so.

The last thing Biden wants is the election to be all about his record. He loses if people are talking about his track record and what he's likely to do in the next 4 years. Frankly what most people think he's going to do in the next four years is die.

So if they manage to change the channel and have the entire election be a discussion about trump's legal issues that actually improves their chances even though most people will not turn against trump just because of his legal issues. Now the discussion becomes all about trump and his record both political and criminal and Joe Biden can go hide in his basement and not talk to anyone. That is precisely how he won the last election.

Secondly, if the judge actually does put trump in jail or some species of house arrest then trump in a practical sense will not be able to get out and work the crowds and campaign. No matter what, that hurts his chances. It is a major handicap if you cannot get out and work the crowds for anyone, and for trump that's kind of his whole game. He does giant rallies and gets people excited and gets lots of media clips and that's how he wins elections and if he can't do that even for a little while it has a serious impact

It will take time to see whether or not the disadvantages outweigh the advantages for the democrats. But it is not cut and dry

My guess is you'll see a major surprise before the end of summer.

SC will rule a president can be tried for crimes, rules in favor of Trump, and then they toss Obama and Bill Clinton in jail
