The United States Justice Department, which is weaponized to put criminals into jail after convictions in courts of law, has formally indicted Trump by a Federal Grand Jury. The criminally-charged Trump will reportedly surrender himself to authorities on Tuesday, where they may lock him up if he is deemed a flight risk. From the NY Times: "Here’s what to know: The indictment reaches back to the end of Mr. Trump’s term in January 2021, when the documents — many of which were said to be in the White House residence — were packed in boxes along with clothes, gifts, photos and other material, and shipped by the General Services Administration to Mar–a-Lago. After lengthy efforts by the National Archives throughout much of 2021 to get Mr. Trump to turn over the material he had taken with him — considered government property under the Presidential Records Act — Mr. Trump turned over 15 boxes of material in January 2022. The boxes turned out to contain highly sensitive material with classified markings, prompting a Justice Department investigation. Last August, federal agents descended on Mar-a-Lago to conduct an extraordinary search that turned up material that Mr. Trump had failed to turn over in response to a subpoena months earlier demanding the return of any classified documents still in his possession. The Justice Department has repeatedly questioned Mr. Trump’s level of cooperation with the efforts to recover the documents, saying that it had recovered more than 100 documents containing classified markings even after an attestation by one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers that a “diligent search” by his legal team had not turned up any further materials. Mr. Trump still faces other ongoing criminal investigations. They include Mr. Smith’s inquiry into Mr. Trump’s efforts to hold onto power following his election loss — and how they led to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol — and an investigation by a prosecutor in Georgia into his attempts to reverse his 2020 election loss in that vital swing state. There's about 3 or 4 which are serious. Basically around the fact that he refused to turn the documents over and willfully hung on to them. Having them itseilf isn't really a huge deal - biden had classified documents, You can just claim you forgot. BUT - the problem for trump is the tapes where he's talking about them and he knows he's got them. And that's really the main issue here. So really one 'crime', a few charges around that crime. The rest are kind of fluff. So - what's his defense. Well- most of his defenses are going to be technical. he's going to argue that the discussion with his lawyer should be covered under confidentiality and that's a pretty strong case, he might very well win that. Then the prosecution's job of proving he knew he had the docs and it wasn't a mistake gets much much harder. He will also look at the warrant - several times now the FBI has screwed up warrants and they get thrown out and all the evidence found gets tossed with it - and that would be the end of the case. There's a few other technical angles he can come at it with. I mean -it's pretty clear he's guilty but it's also very clear hillary clinton was guilty and she's not in jail either. The thing is - this will open a new chapter in American Political life. It has always been the case that ex pres' or even high ranking politicians didn't face charges for their time in office. Now - the dems want that rule to apply to them but not to republicans. So guess what will happen when republicans get in. We're going to see a new era of anyone who is president will be investigated within an inch of their lives when the other party gets back into power, Quote "That which doesn't kill me...
