Forum Admin Greg Posted August 15, 2022 Forum Admin Report Share Posted August 15, 2022 Some of you might have noticed that I've activated a "bad" word filter on the site. I've only got a few bad words on the filter - I need to do some brain storming to come up with some more... so the list will slowly grow as I add to the list. In the past, I've avoided implementing this type of filter because I figured we'd all be adults and there would be no need for such restrictions. But here we are! Note: the filter will ONLY filter posts going forward (i.e new posts). So any past post that contains a "bad" word will remain. Any issues or questions, post them below! There's certain types of vileness not allowed: 1) Holocaust denial -> forum members, please counter with arguments but treat the poster with due respect 2) Gay guys having sex -> free speech should never offend people ---+ Am I wrong? 🤔

herbie
It's 2022 and 1963 era filters simply blocking words that are now vernacular is a bit silly. Invision & PhpBB devs need to modernize the built in filters with AI that determines what the words are being used for. I don't filter talk like that, nor you in normal conversation. We all use those words for emphasis as there's no spoken exclamation mark. They no longer even have shock value. Starring them out and reposting seems childish. Probably less childish than trying to structure a serious argument with cuss words in it. Or perhaps less childish than some members getting all bent out of shape cause someone called them a nasty word... Hey, I agree with you @herbie, I resisted the push the ban words for over 22 years - that's quite an effort! But alas, here we are... I've got members filing reports because someone used a bad word, or insulted them with a specific word. This is just a simple attempt to limit the amount of reports I get over simple insults and or certain words being used. If it doesn't work, and everyone hates it, I'll remove it. herbie
I admit to going over the top, but with using those words directed at someone, not the words themselves. And I'm only annoyed using them as posts like F*** Trudeau or F*** Biden as those are simplistic, mere wastes of bandwidth and contribute nothing. But banning words the Scot and Irish Uncles sue around the dinner table, heard on regularly on TV and one's I've used myself when public speaking seems over the top. Judgemental to 1960 standards by the makers of these forum programs. I'm more familiar with PhpBB that automatically replaces the words in a banned list if you click submit. I am Groot
I don't mind the bad word filter so much as the lack of information about what the bad word is. I usually get in trouble over various uses of 'idi0t' or 'm0ron', though I don't direct such words at specific people. Is there a reason why there's no highlighting?
