Now that Canada has realized what a waste of time it was to have our airships dropping bombs on anything that moved in Iraq and Syria, we have decided to send ground troops to "train" our allies. At least now we get to find out who our allies are.

Canadian troops are now on the ground working with the Kurds in a planned attack on Mosul:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/video?playlistId=1.2879589

They will be subjected to "indirect fire" and will probably fire if/when fired at. Where have we heard that before? I assume that will be the mantra until the body bags start coming home.

By the way, the Kurds are the enemies of Turkey so I guess we are now enemies of Turkey - are we not?

These folks should publish a scorecard so the Canadians know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

How soon before we get out of this insanity and let those folks fight their own civil wars.

The kurds need and deserve our help. And the bombing is working.

Of course Canada supports training Kurds, just as it supports Canadian oil services contracts in the region, like those for Range Energy Resources:

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Apr 5, 2016) - Range Energy Resources Inc. ("Range" or the "Company") (CSE:RGO) (YGK.F) announces that on April 5th, 2016, Gas Plus Khalakan ("GPK"), the sole contractor of the Khalakan PSC in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, issued a statement regarding the successful testing and completion of the Shewashan-2 development well.

If we're in for a penny we're in for a pound. We deserve a pounding too, especially in light of our truckin' and tradin' with Saudi Arabia.

Perfectly understandable and consistent with Canadian oil services contracts in several nations for the region, not just Iraq. Like Chretien, Martin, or Harper, PM Trudeau will be supportive of Canadian mining and oil services interests around the world. Training Kurdish military forces in Iraq is consistent with this objective.

"will be supportive"... now you're into your crystal ballin'!

you thought you had something with your last post on that private 'somewhat minuscule' company venture. Sorry to have burst your bubble there... why the way you perpetually flogged that pic of Paul Martin in the desert tent through MLW thread after MLW thread, one would have thought you could update on that and actually present something on Harper providing direct Canadian support in regards your reference to Kurdistan oil.

oh wait... didn't your efforts to highlight Canadian interests in Iraq somewhat back-fire on ya - should we resurrect a thread, hey! It's always humourous to realize just how far you've reached to try to deflect away the shyte-storm results U.S. Iraq "regime change" has wrought, hey!

Mine is not to pass judgement...just the facts. Kurdistan has even bigger goals than making Canada some oil money.

We could help the Kurds, but one of our allies (Turkey) does not want to help them at all. Turkey go out of it's way to make sure the Kurds have a hard life.

Turkey is an enemy of the Kurds and vice versa. They have been at war for years. Canada is an ally of the Kurds. Canada is an ally of Turkey. ???????????????????????????

One single dime spent in the middle east is too much. Let them fight if they want to fight.

We should not be training on the front lines. The argument that it is more effective is irrelevant, it is not our place to be in the front lines in a civil war.

That's if you consider it to be a civil war and not just a continuation of the war from over 10 years ago.

The Americans have a few troops in Iraq but they are only in a support and teaching role and not expected to be involved in combat in that civil war:

Looks like an American SEAL did not read the instructions.

Fortunately for Canada, our troops in Iraq are only for a support and teaching role and not expected to be involved in combat in that civil war.

There's no need for any of this at all. Never mind sending troops, aircraft, or "trainers".... We should not even pay the long distance charges to TALK to people in the middle east about this conflict (that our allies caused in an epic act of stupidity).

Canadians would still go to the ME for the mining and oil services contracts, just like they always have.

you keep beating on this point; again, what do private citizens representing private companies pursuing, "mining and or oil services contracts in the Middle East, proper", have to do with whatever Canadian military decision/deployment the Canadian government chooses to enact/sanction within Iraq... you know, what this thread is about, hey?

So our troops are teaching and supporting Iraqi troops? Why are they wearing Kurdish flags on their uniforms?

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2016/05/canadian-troops-iraq-wearing-kurdish-flag-160505171906785.html

The Kurds are in a war with Turkey. Who the hell are we helping there and why? When did we start wearing the flags of other countries?

Why are we still in this deadly civil war?

Like the rest of the west I think we're mostly there to keep up appearances.

Because of civilian leaders that simply dont have a clue about middle eastern regional dynamics, and the do-gooders here at home that support them and think we should go racing across the world to provide security every time they see an upsetting video on youtube.

The stupid leading the stupid. Never a great combination.

If wearing Kurdish flags decrease the chances of being attacked by the kurds, doesn't it by the same token increase the dangers from the side which we are supposedly supporting?

Nothing in that article made any sense.

Our involvement over there does not make sense.
