WestCoastRunner Posted January 28, 2015 Report Share Posted January 28, 2015 An interesting opinion piece appeared on the CNN website today suggesting that the time may be right for a North American Passport involving Mexica, U.S. and Canada. Some of the suggested benefits include: By erecting a wall along the border and making crossings so difficult, costly and dangerous, we have interrupted the old "circularity" of migratory flows, trapping millions of workers on this side of the border. In the face of growing competition from rising powers elsewhere in the world, simply taking our geography for granted and focusing our attention elsewhere is no longer a viable option. Integrated production platforms, sometimes spanning all three countries, have helped draw manufacturing back from competitors across the Pacific. Mexico is the linchpin to the U.S. relations with the countries of Central and South America. The economic prosperity, education and security of Mexico's people will help determine the overall competitiveness of North America on the global stage. Moreover, Americans on this side of the Rio Grande must acknowledge the "Mexicanness" in the United States and treat Mexicans living here with the dignity and respect they deserve. But I think that Canada and the US should issue a single visa to foreigners valid for travel to both countries. IOW, a foreigner admitted to the US (with a valid visa) should also be free to travel to Canada and vice-versa. In practical terms, we already have such a system. A foreigner with Canadian permanent residence or a visitor visa has little problem receiving a US visa, and we admit almost all foreigners as visitors if they have a green card or US visitor status. The US does not have a problem at the Canada-US land border and the delays there are wrong-headed. Canada and the US should work together to control who arrives on the continent, north of the Rio Grande. IMHO, our federal government (ie Chretien) seriously dropped the ball on this issue some 10 years ago when the US created the HS department. What's the big deal...get a passport...see the world ! Canadians seeking abortions in the U.S. plummeted from thousands per year to hundreds after a passport was required to enter. Even though you tried to attack us several times, we still let it slide, no worries. What's the big deal...get a passport...see the world ! I have one, and I do see the world far beyond the US. Well....no...there was the Caroline Affair....Alaska boundary dispute....Aroostook War....Oregon boundary dispute...etc. Not always so good. I have one, and I do see the world far beyond the US. Do it for sovereignty, border control, identification, etc. Easy cross border shopping for cheaper gas, booze, and smokes is not a good reason. But the U.S. is most kind and gracious, permitting Canadians traveling to our great country for cheaper gas by land and sea to only need one of the following...less if under 16 years old or 50% Native American: Canadian passport Enhanced Driver's License/Enhanced Identification Card NEXUS FAST/EXPRES SENTRI enrollment cards Seems like a whole lotta trouble just to save a few loonies....err...bucks. We can have our differences and still treat each other like family. It shouldn't be much different than moving from state to state in the US - each has different laws and priorities, but they still make it work.
