Looks like the folks in the USA do not want to be left out of this week of carnage. It appears that another youngster decided to take out a few of his peers in school.

Why do these shooting not seem to be news anymore?

The price of freedom.

That's quite rich. We've learned tragically that the U.S. does not have a monopoly on violence. I am deeply saddened by the tragic developments in Ottawa. I and I hope all Americans feel nothing but sadness.

But there was smug satisfaction by some about the U.S. being the "handgun capital of the world" (Iink to post and thread).

All countries can suffer this kind of tragedy.

  • The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Is there a point to this reference? People making fun of an American who accidentally discharged her handgun in a meeting offends you? Does it show an insensitivity to those who want to mishandle firearms in a public place?

Please forgive them....it is a common practice for some Canadians to point at America in their time of fear and crisis. It is a coping skill that smugly depends on things being "far worse" in the "U.S.", "south of the border", or "below the 49th". As you have noted, Gordon Sinclair taught us these things decades ago.

No. It shows the smugness and sense of superiority of Canadians. I have been very careful not to echo my compatriot in ceaselessly attacking Canada. Many Canadians make an art of attacking the U.S.

Yes...and I appreciate the good cop patience and grace in the face of such obvious smugness; I prefer the more direct bad cop "Ugly American" role to expose such sentiments from some of our "neighbours north of the border". We also loss another AmCan perspective with the departure of former member American Woman, but carry on we must !

What's most ironic out of this and other similar instances, is that there's no prayer allowed in schools. Except after a shooting. Then apparently prayer vigils are perfectly fine.

Where's the irony in that-do you think prayers would have somehow prevented the shooting?

As sometimes happens in these shootings, "relief" is realized by some because shooter Jaylen Freyberg targeted specific students; at least two victims were his cousins compared to random shootings / victims. The .40 cal Beretta came from a parent/family source, purchased from a local Cabela's outfitter store. Authorities are still sifting through the usual social media sites to build a profile.

It is entirely possible, indeed quite likely, that building a caring community rather than a sea of individuals wired to their tablets and connected only by Facebook would have made this, and other horrors like Newtown or Santa Barbara less likely.

I would concur at least to the extent that the facebook, tablet, endless texting (or worse) scenarios we all see every day are not doing good things to our society.

The NRA will no doubt use this to mount another silly campaign about why it's needed to arm more teachers.

And/or further promote safe storage of firearms within the home.

Did gun control stop the rampage on Parliament Hill?

Only people of your ilk are using it for political purposes.

Yes and no. Yes in that it limited him in the types of firearms he was able to acquire legally, no in that (like most gun related crimes in Canada) he was still able to obtain a firearm illegally.........clear as mud?

I agree. I'm sure he took the firearms laws very seriously when planning and executing his attempted massacre.

Apparently among some yappy Canucks this is only notable when it happens in the US.

A young person shot and killed one fellow student and wounded a few others.

He was a visible minority in that he belonged to an Indian Tribe.

What happened to all the theories about cultural wars and Islamic brainwashing? This kid was popular and on the football team. I am surprised that the bigots on this board have not taken advantage of all the potential material to play into their prejudices.

But there is still time.
