overthere Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 While I do not think it is a joke it is sad at how many games are decided by a referee call that is later shown to be wrong. I have a soccer officiating question; Team A is advancing past the center into Team B territory. A member of Team B makes a vicious tackle on member of Team A (worth at least a yellow card) but the referee plays the advantage (does not stop play) since Team A maintains possession and then scores. Can the offender on Team B - the one who made that tackle - be given a yellow after the goal? No, I don't think so. But....soccer is the same as hockey in that supplemental discipline can be given after the match when the officials miss soemthing or fail to apply the proper penalty. Soccer is a joke. The World Cup referees are frequently second or third rate mutts who are on the pitch only to satisfy some dopey vision of ethnic diversity and/or FIFA politics. Any other sport deploys the best officials at the best events- period. FIFA also fails to provide any reveiew mechanism to ensure the officials get it right. They finally and belatedly have goal line technology, but there is no reason they could not have an immediate, on field appeal mechanism when an official gets it wrong. By appeal mechanism, I don't mean the handwringing and wailing on the field we see hundreds ot times per game. I mean a video review by people not involved on the field. It's every simple stuff. If they'd had it yesterday, Ivory Coast would not have been cheated. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
WWWTT Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 Here in Finland a TV-commentator described the German win over the USA by saying "arbeit macht frei". Well, even though there was no malicious intent whatsoever it was pretty poor judgment to make such a remark. In Germany or Austria he would be out of the job and perhaps facing prosecution. Such a sensitive issue the holocaust is that even sarcastic humour on it is frowned upon. Facing prosecution??? WWWTT You must be pissed at all the best infrastructure spending for this PanAm games next year. Think of all the poor people the money for a Velodrome in Milton or a Stadium in Hamilton could help. WWWTT Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 You must be pissed at all the best infrastructure spending for this PanAm games next year. At least some of those residences built for the athletes can be converted to affordable housing. But ya, I'm not happy to see any more stadiums being built. But I didn't really follow what was being built as far as stadiums go? Was only aware of the residences. Don't get me wrong, there is a place for entertainment. But I can live without it, or find something else if it meant that money would be directed to helping develop. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Boges Posted June 27, 2014 Author Report Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) That panhandler has many options through our taxpayer funded social safety net. He/She often chooses to live that way. But that's beside the point, a lot of wealth is created by people's desire to be entertained. So raging about it all is more than a little humorous. Lots of businesses are making money off this World Cup, in this country. Would you deny them that because there are poor people in Brazil? Edited June 27, 2014 by Boges Quote

-TSS- Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 The top-half of the draw: Brazil-Chile Colombia-Uruguay France-Nigeria Germany-Algeria The bottom half of the draw: Holland-Mexico Costa Rica-Greece Argentina-Switzerland Belgium-USA Anyone can see that the top half is much tougher. Brazil and Germany are the biggest two favourites but they will meet in the semifinals if they make that far. My estimate is that the South-American spell holds and the title will be won either by Brazil or Argentina. Quote

guyser Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Brazil is not a poor country. There are lots of poor, but plenty of money in the country. The poor centralize in the North East, but their economy is bigger than ours and in fact is the 8th largest. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Perhaps the world cup this year and the olympics in two year's time will prove to be good advertisement for Brazil as a country of tourist-destination. Never been there myself but what I've heard it's a marvellous country but it has a reputation, perhaps a justifiable one, to be a really rough and violent country, which of course does make potential tourists to go elsewhere. Quote
Boges Posted June 28, 2014 Author Report Posted June 28, 2014 Like any developing country, there are places tourists just don't go. Can't imagine Brazil would be a lot different than Mexico. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 28, 2014 Report Posted June 28, 2014 Brazil through after a tight match against Chile I must say that I'm a bit puzzled why do people on this site say that they hope Brazil doesn't win and they hope that Germany/Holland will win. I would have thought you would have prefered any team of the American continent over any Europeans. Quote
