Boges Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 Says nothing about how Brazilians overall reacted. I thought the predictions here, on twitter and elsewhere that they'd riot in the streets over a loss horribly insulting to them as a people. It's not like they were protesting this World Cup or anything. But yeah, I always find odd that fans would riot. Quote
Black Dog Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 It's not like they were protesting this World Cup or anything. Protesting the amount of money wasted on the tournament, the corruption etc /= rioting over losing a match. Quote
Boges Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 (edited) I just heard a good comparison to how this Brazil loss would translate to us in Canada. Imagine how you'd feel if in 2010 in Vancouver for the Gold Medal game against the USA, Canada lost 15-2. That would be really tough to take. Edited July 9, 2014 by Boges Quote

Comparison falls apart when you consider Canada is considered the world's best at hockey. Brazil is not the world's best at soccer: lot more parity there. Quote

Going into any game against the US a victory is anything but guaranteed, but no one would have expected a blowout. In 2010 Canada had lost to the US earlier in the tournament. I'm sure, even though 2 of their top players were out, Brazil thought they had a decent change of winning that game. Canada isn't head-and-shoulders above TROTW in Ice Hockey even though they're largely considered the best. Edited July 9, 2014 by Boges Quote

Guest Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I missed it due to work, but I hear it was awful. Still, that's usually the way it is with the World Cup. The closer a team gets to the ultimate prize, the more not losing becomes a bigger priority than winning. Quote

GostHacked Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-28258207 Ray Whelan, head of Fifa partner Match Hospitality, has fled to escape arrest in Rio over alleged illegal World Cup ticket sales, Brazilian police say. Police chief Fabio Barucke said Mr Whelan was officially considered a fugitive from justice. Earlier on Thursday, a judge accepted an indictment for Mr Whelan - who is British - and 11 others. An international gang is said to have earned some $90m (£52m) per tournament and may have acted at four World Cups. The gang is believed to have been making money by acquiring and illegally selling on VIP tickets and hospitality passes. Corruption? Say it aint so. Quote

-TSS- Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 So, either a European team wins for the first time in South-America or Argentina throws salt to the wounds of the Brazilians by winning on their soil, which they would never stop reminding about. After all, the two countries are arch-enemies, not just in sports but they are not very close friends in political terms either. Therefore, no doubt who the Brazilians will be cheering for, sod any South-American solidarity. Quote
Big Guy Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 The final to-day is being billed as the Lionel Messi ballet vs. the German march. I think the march wins. Germany for the cup! -TSS- Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 I hope you're right. I can only see two possible outcomes; either Argentina will win 1-0 after 90 or 120 minutes or if Germany know how to crack the Argentinian defence of steel Germany wins 4-0. Quote
Big Guy Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 A good close game. Lots of opportunities for both teams. Germany has the cup! Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

Boges Posted February 24, 2015 Author Report Posted February 24, 2015 BUMP! Merry Christmas! The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be played in December. http://www.thestar.com/sports/2015/02/24/winter-world-cup-in-qatar-almost-a-done-deal.html Long seen as inevitable, a 2022 World Cup in November and December is nowpractically a done deal. A FIFA task force on Tuesday recommended playing the tournament in Qatar at the end of the year in 2022 to avoid the summer heat. Temperatures in the Gulf emirate routinely top 40C when the World Cup traditionally kicks off in June. A Dec. 23 final in Doha is possible as FIFA aims to shorten the tournament from the current 32-day schedule to ease disruption for players, clubs and leagues worldwide. The plan should be approved by the FIFA executive committee, chaired by President Sepp Blatter, at a March 19-20 meeting in Zurich. Blatter, who is an IOC member, has long favoured November-December to avoid clashing with the Winter Olympics, scheduled for February 2022. FIFA said its task force chose the “most viable period” over other proposals to play in January, April or May, dates favoured mostly by European soccer officials. “Given that the two bidding cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics — Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China) — pledged recently to host the winter games from Feb. 4-20, 2022; that the month of Ramadan begins on April 2 in 2022; and that consistently hot conditions prevail from May to September in Qatar, the only remaining effective option is the November-December window,” FIFA said in a statement. Yanking the WC from them now is kind of bad form. Even though their using slave labour to build these stadiums the idea of taking it away now would be a huge waste. As John Oliver said earlier this year, FIFA is a despicable organization but everyone loves the World Cup, so who cares right? A Christmas season with WC soccer would actually be quite cool. Then again many North Americans care about a different type of football that time of year. That Sunday, I'll be more likely to be watching late season NFL than the WC. Also buried in that story is the fact that, and I did start a thread about this already, the 2022 Winter Olympics will be either in China or Kazakstan. So after a Brazil Summer Olympics next year we have Olympics and WCs in Japan, South Korea, Russia, Qatar and either China or Kazkstan. When will we see another big games in the West? 2024 at the earliest? Will big ticket events like these matter as much to the West after a decade and a half events in Asia? Quote
