-TSS- Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Mexico played very foolishly against Holland. If you are one up against the Dutch it is not clever to give them the initiative and just hope that you can defend until the end. Mexico didn't play like this in their earlier games, not even against Brazil, and were very good. Quote
Big Guy Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Germany over Algeria big time this afternoon. Germany for the cup! Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
-TSS- Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 The director of the broadcasting always picks the cutest girls from each teams' supporters. Somehow they only pick males when showing Algerian supporters. I really really wonder why that is. Quote
Boges Posted July 2, 2014 Author Report Posted July 2, 2014 Tim Howard is one of the best Goalies in the world. Too bad everyone else on the US is lacking. That one dude missed an empty netter in stoppage time which could have won it, but without Howard they had no business being in the game. Oh and Argentina pretty much has Messi and no one else. Quote
GostHacked Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 If I stopped watching, what would change? If everyone stops, then yes, something would change. I can help a panhandler. I can't do jack about the World Cup. Shanty towns were removed, displacing thousands. You can help both. By saying something about it. The story of removing all those people for the cup is not something widely reported out there. So to many it never happened. That's kind of the problem when few outside Brazil know that situation. I don't even know the extent, but what do you do with those people? The military was used to help 'solve' this problem. Thing is they never thought to remove these people before, only because of the World Cup it happened. Quote

Sometimes it appears that the ball is tethered to his foot. Maybe his size is an advantage in that he can see the ball better? He certainly is an outstanding performer, a pleasure to watch and may be all Argentina needs to get to the finals. Germany for the cup! Big Guy Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Germany looked a little shaky but still managed the win over France. I do not think Germany has still played to potential. Two more wins - Germany for the cup! Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
-TSS- Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 It is one of the stellar-positions of international football that France just cant beat Germany in a major tournament. Another such position is that Europeans dont win the world cup in South-America. It just doesnt happen. Quote
-TSS- Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Actually it is quite a shame if such a piss porr team as the current Brazilian side are going to win the world cup. However, they are one step closer after they defeated Colombia. Friday could be named as the foinding of paper-tigers as both France and Colombia were hyped to no end before both faced their exit in the quarter-finals. Brazil or Argentina will win because the tournament is in South-America and it is against the natural order of things that any other than South-American wins when the tournament is in South-America or in Concacaf. -TSS- Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Another 0-0 score through 114 minutes. And people wonder why soccer hasn't caught on in North America yet. This topic crops up every four years. It is important for FIFA to promote the game in the USA and it is catching on as an event every four years as fun to watch but otherwise after the tournament is over people revert to the US-sports. It's a cultural thing really. Even though the USA and Canada are young countries they are not that young that they wouldn't have had time to develop their own sporting cultures. In the USA the sporting-field is rather saturated with the big three in form of American football, basketball and baseball reigning supreme with hockey trailing behind. Soccer could challenge hockey as the fourth most popular sport but realistically speaking that's it. In Canada nothing can challenge the position of hockey as the most popular spectator sport. In that sense Canada and Finland are alike. Quote
Big Guy Posted July 6, 2014 Report Posted July 6, 2014 Is it too early for predictions? Germany over Brazil 2-1 Argentina over Netherlands 2-0 Germany over Argentina 1-1 (after penalty kicks) Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
Big Guy Posted July 6, 2014 Report Posted July 6, 2014 Kraut lover! I like their disciplined play. The post game analysis showed consistently that the German defense moved as a unit with very few weak lapses. I believe that the World Cup is won on defence and not offense - even though their last goal was scored on a set play on a free kick. Soccer supporters are primarily middle class working folks. Whereas, the wealth hoarders are not the targets, are they? True, if the money was spent on other things, many lives/lifestyles would improve! Classic diversion and shift of blame onto the middle class! Enjoy the games while the 1% play their own games and have you blaming each other for the problems they create so they can enjoy unlimited wealth for countless of generations to come! Shady Posted July 6, 2014 Report Posted July 6, 2014 I'm sorry, but a championship game shouldn't be decided on penalty kicks. That's completely absurd. It's like deciding the world series champion on a home run contest, a stanley cup champion on penalty shots, an nba champion on a three point contest, and the nlf champion on a field goal contest. Ridiculous. Quote
Guest Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 In the groups, if everything else lined up equally, the team to move on would be decided on a coin toss. Quote
Big Guy Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 (edited) In the groups, if everything else lined up equally, the team to move on would be decided on a coin toss. I had an elderly uncle who had played in Europe many, many years ago. He told me that in some leagues, a winner of a nil, nil or tie score was decided by the number of corner kicks. The theory was that the more corner kicks that a team had then the more play was in that end and that the team with the greater number of corners awarded was the better team during that game. Guest Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 I have heard it touted as a possible tie breaker, but I've never seen it used myself. I don't know what the problem was with the "golden goal". I think it was used in one world cup. 2002, I think. It seems a perfectly reasonable way of finding a winner to me. Preferable to penalties, anyway. Quote

Black Dog Posted July 7, 2014 Report Posted July 7, 2014 Another 0-0 score through 114 minutes. And people wonder why soccer hasn't caught on in North America yet. First, soccer has already caught on in North America. Record ratings for the World Cup, the three Canadian MLS franchises pack their houses, and millions of people follow the EPL, La Liga, Champions League etc every year. Second, I wonder why people use "popular in North Ameria" as some kind of stand-in for quality when soccer is more popular outside of NA than all the big three NA sports combined. As for the scoring, that always strikes me as hilarious. Basketball has so much scoring it's actually meaningless. People freak out over no-hitters in baseball. American Football has almost no actual action to speak of over the course of the game. Quote
Boges Posted July 7, 2014 Author Report Posted July 7, 2014 (edited) First, soccer has already caught on in North America. Record ratings for the World Cup, the three Canadian MLS franchises pack their houses, and millions of people follow the EPL, La Liga, Champions League etc every year. Shady is obviously looking to troll soccer fans. The USA v Portugal game had ratings the NHL would never EVER get in the states. That being said, now the USA is out, I seriously doubt the ratings will match that. The MLS has a similar niche appeal across North America as the NHL gets. Often teams are deemed successful when they can pack a "soccer-only stadium" like the cruddy BMO field for a game. I seriously doubt you could regularly pack a soccer stadium for an MLS game if it was in a 50,000 plus stadium. A lot of the MLS team that use NFL stadiums for their game see embarrassingly spotty crowds. Seattle seems to be an exception to that rule. Second, I wonder why people use "popular in North Ameria" as some kind of stand-in for quality when soccer is more popular outside of NA than all the big three NA sports combined. Because there are 4 sports that North Americans largely dominated. The problem with the MLS is that it's not a top league. People do watch EPL etc, but I suspect the ratings don't compare to Big 4 sports. As for the scoring, that always strikes me as hilarious. Basketball has so much scoring it's actually meaningless. People freak out over no-hitters in baseball. American Football has almost no actual action to speak of over the course of the game. I will say most of that Costa Rica v Holland game was mind numbingly dull. That being said I didn't really have a strong rooting interest. I find you can deem any sporting even exciting, if you care who wins. All sports can be mocked for their weaknesses, it's all subjective though and anyone who thinks they can definitively identify an exciting sport is arrogant and obviously wrong.
