bleeding heart Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 It's good to see an official stance that is a also a principled one...Mayor Ford's unreflective whining aside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007

WestCoastRunner Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 There was a visual protest staged at Vancouver's rainbow crosswalks at Davie and Bute, as a recreation of the Beatles' Abbey Road album cover but with naked men carrying Putin masks. -TSS- Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Which would you prefer: Canada wins hockey but doesn't top the medal-table or Canada tops the medal-table but gets knocked out of hockey in the quarter-finals? Quote
Wilber Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Just sayin'...(whistles and rolls eyes) That was an IOC decision. A BC Supreme Court judge ruled that the IOC was indeed discriminating but the court had no authority over the IOC in this matter. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Shady Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Which would you prefer: Canada wins hockey but doesn't top the medal-table or Canada tops the medal-table but gets knocked out of hockey in the quarter-finals? I'd prefer winning hockey, but finishing 2nd 3rd or 4th in total medals. Quote
Wilber Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Which would you prefer: Canada wins hockey but doesn't top the medal-table or Canada tops the medal-table but gets knocked out of hockey in the quarter-finals? The second option because I don't think the Canadians or Americans are going to do very well anyway. They both have a crappy record on the big ice. Hope I'm wrong but my money is on the Ruskis. Big ice, home court. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Wilber Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) I also think finishing first in medals would be a much bigger deal. We have won golds in hockey before so it wouldn't be a huge surprise. We have never done better than 3rd in medals and that was Vancouver. Think of where we were in Calgary. Not even one gold and 13th in medals Edited February 12, 2014 by Wilber Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
WestCoastRunner Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 It would be really sad if Canada got knocked out of the quarter-finals. Come on, are you kidding me? That would be devastating! Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass. - Maya Angelou

Not even one gold and 13th in medals Canada was first place in the medal table in Vancouver. But that wouldn't have meant a damn thing if we didn't win the men's hockey gold. Winning hockey is a much bigger deal than even winning a single other medal, let alone winning the medal table. Quote
Boges Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Good win by the women's hockey team. Might try to watch the replay of that tonight. Edited February 12, 2014 by Boges Quote
Black Dog Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Yeah I can't really imagining not winning gold in hockey and being like "welp at least we're on top of the table thanks to freestyle moguls!" Quote
Wilber Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Better consider it at least. The last Olympics on the big ice surface they came seventh, the time before that they came fourth. Canada has never won a gold on the large ice. A couple of silvers though so it is not out of the question. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
guyser Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Wilber I think the reason on the past lack of success was arrogance. (at least I hope so) I think this team, and all the players, know its a tight race at the top and any slacking will show up in the results. Not saying they will win (both men and women) but I feel an honest showing will result in medals for both. Quote
Boges Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 The main problem with the 2006 team was they couldn't score. I can't see that being a problem here. The Art Ross trophy winner from last year was a substitute. The Norris Trophy winner from last year barely made the team. This team is stacked. The only weakness could be at net but I think the players struggles are more due to the team they play for then how well they've been performing this season. Quote

There's no pattern as to who wins on what size ice. Besides, have you ever played on Olympic sized ice? One of the rinks in my league has the "big ice", and there is nowhere near as much difference as many in the media try to make it seem. It takes less than 5 minutes to get used to it. Quote

Everyone is going to have to adjust. The Europeans grew up playing on the big surface and many still play in leagues like the Russian and Swedish elite leagues. I'm no saying Canada can't win, just that is a much bigger job than a lot of people think. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
