overthere Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 I'm going to put this here because I don't really care about Televising SCOTUS. But this segment of John Oliver's show is HI-LAIR-IUS! http://www.salon.com/2014/10/20/john_oliver_slams_scotus_for_not_allowing_live_video_creates_hilarious_canine_reenactments/ He's the cutting edge of TV/News Comedy. If you get HBO you HAVE TO! DVR his show. It's great! +1. Oliver is very funny. He has no filters and offends all with equal energy. A few episodes ago he devised fake attack ads for both Senatorial candidates in - I think- Kentucky. I could not find them on YouTube, not surprising because they are pretty raunchy but hilarious. GostHacked Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 Really, it's not a reason to watch the show. It would be for me! I'll take sex over violence. Quote
Guest Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 It's actually quite distracting, and I wish they would stop it. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted October 21, 2014 Report Posted October 21, 2014 It's actually quite distracting, and I wish they would stop it. There is such a thing as a sexy story, sexy films that incorporate eroticism into a narrative. But it's more often done poorly. I don't think this show tries to do that. Sex is part of the story but only here and there. Once in awhile, they do seem to add it gratuitously - I agree with that. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

Mighty AC Posted October 21, 2014 Report Posted October 21, 2014 I find it a little disturbing that in general we have no problem with fairly extreme levels of violence yet consider the sex and nudity in OitNB to be gratuitous. Could the same story be conveyed without as much sex? Of course, but the fact that so many consider sex or nudity to be indecent hints at a larger problem. It's quite the statement about how messed up a culture is that the natural physical expression of love or desire between two humans is considered obscene while gruesome murder and horrific violence is standard fare. You can watch someone slowly tortured to death in a movie/show rated PG13/14 but show a quick glimpse of a nipple and its adults only. Quote

I can think of one scene that went on a little too long, had a little too much softlens focus... and if you can guess which scene I mean then you will have proved my point. If it's the German Military Base scene then I can agree. It was also my favourite from a completely visual standpoint (Poussey's partner was HAWT!!!) Quote
Michael Hardner Posted October 21, 2014 Report Posted October 21, 2014 If it's the German Military Base scene then I can agree. Bingo. Of course, it's hard to argue against straying from the narrative from time to time. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
Boges Posted October 21, 2014 Report Posted October 21, 2014 Bingo. Of course, it's hard to argue against straying from the narrative from time to time. It was an important one of their origin stories. She was one of the top characters in the second season. SPOILER!!! Them being caught and her family being shunned/bannished had to have contributed to a life where she ends up in jail. It's clear they loved each other. Quote
Guest Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 I guess I just don't need to see it so graphically to know it is happening. A simple reverse shot of a chimney demolition and a train going into a tunnel would suffice. Well, not so much in that particular show, I suppose. It's the same with the violence as well. I don't need graphic. (Having read the reviews, it's one reason I won't be seeing Fury.) Quote

Ash74 Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 EVIL DEAD the series in 2015 has been confirmed. My entire life will be based on being able to watch this show. I will send the wife and kids to the in laws and sit in my "THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK" boxers knowing that if by some miracle it lasts 13 episodes my life will have meant something Quote “Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Michael Hardner Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 EVIL DEAD the series in 2015 has been confirmed. After I read this, I experienced: uncertainty, confusion, recognition, brief joy, disappointment, hope ... in that order. The initial film was great, and the remakes were fun too so hooray, but a series ? At worst that would besmirch the original series, at best it would be its own thing as M*A*S*H the series was to M*A*S*H the movie. I'd rather see more sex than violence. I think it comes back to our Christian past. Religions often try to control sex, yet seem very comfortable with violent tales of a blood thirsty and misogynistic god committing genocide, infanticide, etc. I think it was from this past that sex became taboo. We're beginning to somewhat loosen up on the sex and nudity, though unequally. It's now acceptable and common to see completely naked women on TV shows, yet a split second glimpse of a penis is still considered a shocker. Baby steps... I am not sure it is just a Christian past, but human history/past in general. But it's also a social conditioning to equate nudity to sex, when that is not always the case. Quote
