Boges Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 Well, you're the one who suggested replacing bad ones with good ones so I'm asking you. If somebody is advocating for better pay for 'good teachers' then they'd have to explain how to determine good vs bad as well. The story in the OP did not me. Quote
Accountability Now Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) Well I am an old man and I can only speak from experience. I only completed grade six then went off to work for several reasons. My teachers were fantastic. Teachers have changed from back in the day. They never use to face the threat of legal battles or straight up red tape policy like they do now. I don't feel there is the same respect from parents for teachers either which is partially the reason why teachers aren't the same. Edited February 17, 2013 by Accountability Now Quote
Peanutbutter Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) Teachers make $50-70k a year. This is more than enough money and more than fair enough to have every summer off, 30 sick days, and whole host of other benefits. Not to mention a great pension. Mighty AC Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 I've been a private software developer and a teacher. As someone that has spent time in both the private and public sectors it is my opinion that teachers earn more than enough. It is certainly a misunderstood profession, that deserves more respect, but we are more than fairly compensated. Bonam Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 No student about to graduate thinks "gee, they should pay my profession more money". They are all thinking "sweet, I can stop paying tuition and start earning real money!". Just one more of about 402840325720573573204234024 indications that socialist is a caricature, not a person who really holds his opinions/ideas. Quote

I don't feel there is the same respect from parents for teachers either which is partially the reason why teachers aren't the same. Yes teachers were thought so very highly of back in my day. But it has been union militancy and putting out a bad product that has brought about the disrespect. But then a lot of Union militancy and wild wages for what they do along with slovenly work ethic has brought about disrespect. I remember the postman delivering what was called the Royal Mail. He wore his uniform like a proud soldier. Always spit and polished. To my Mom his word was gospel if he reported on us kids doing something dangerous or bad. Now he would be told to mind his own business. Not all teachers are incompetent. Some are very dedicated educaters. Then there are those like socialist here. I can`t believe this guy is for real ! Imagine him teaching your child that he or she does not need basic math skills ? Quote
Michael Hardner Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 The story in the OP did not me. Ok, I see now. I'm ok with the principle of flagging low-performing teachers, but the method outlined in the OP article is too simplistic. They want to flag teachers whose students improve least/decline most under their watch. There's too much micromanagement there. If "dud" teachers really are a problem, then the union and management should get together to determine how to positively address the issue. Maybe more frequent random drop-in audits would work. And - although I can imagine the outcry against this - random electronic monitoring. The thing is, if the goal is improvement rather than punishment (and especially not political expediency) then it should be easier to come up with common goals. Muddy Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 why are comments like this even allowed to stay up? pure dumbness and ignorance. Your right! The only thing those teachers back then wanted to do was educate the kids. That would not fit into todays enlightment . I mean what do kids need the three "R 's for when they can be taught about how to masturbate with vegetables and the proper way to put a condom on. We also have to have time to have teachers indoctrinate our children on the glorys of Socialism. I mean it`s all for the kids ,right ! Quote

socialist Posted February 18, 2013 Author Report Posted February 18, 2013 Can you please tell us the skills which are needed to teach kids these days. Do they still need to know how to read, write and do math? they need to know how to understand math, not memorize useless facts. spelling doesn't matter anymore. kids can draw pictures to express their feelings now. everyone has different learning styles. people like you stuck in the stone age don't understand that. this is how math should be taught. this lady embarrasses herself in this video because she lacks knowledge of 21st century skills. http://www.utahnsagainstcommoncore.com/a-constructivist-math-example/ Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.
Peanutbutter Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 Socialist, I didn't state my opinion one way or another, I only asked you what was important for our children to know. What sort of facts would be useless to memorize? Why doesn't spelling matter anymore? Even though children can and always could draw pictures to express themselves it's still important to be able to articulate thoughts clearly and in a meaningful way. I think it will always be important to be able to do math in your head without the aid of a calculator. Quote Ah la peanut butter sandwiches! - The Amazing Mumferd

westguy Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 socialist - Alberta doesn't want you - maybe BC will. Teachers are already well paid for their job. Considering time off teachers only work 75% of the calendar year ( summer 9 weeks, Christmas break 3 weeks, spring break another week, PDD's another week - total time off=14 weeks) I know of no other profession that has so much time off. If teachers are making 60-75k for doing what they do, that extrapolates to approx. 100K/ yr for an entire year. Also, teachers receive generous benefits and a pension. When you analyze the facts - teachers are well paid. Your bitchin is getting old. If teachers have it so bad, find a more challenging profession. Quote
