wyly Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 But don't pagans have their own gods? I guess you need to define pagan, pagan I believe is a roman/latin term for country bumpkin it doesn't determine any particular kind of belief system and not all societies have gods, even two thousand years ago there were atheists..., Quote “Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.”- John Stuart Mill
wyly Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 Well, apparently there are 330 pagan gods. Out of curiousity....pagans on this board, which among these gods/godesses do you worship? A SMALL DICTIONARY OF PAGAN GODS & GODDESSES http://www.unc.edu/~...od_dess_es.html Wyly, you speak of ancestors - would you say your ancestors woshipped the Norse gods? Some of you guys speak of the solstice....here are some of the dieties and monsters of the solstice. How do you do your worship? Wyly, I think you said you practice EXCEPT the naked dancing by the tree. What are the other ways? Gods, Goddesses, and Monsters of the Winter Solstice http://www.paganscir...winter-solstice what gods my ancestors did or didn't believe in is of no importance, but they all understood the significance of the solstice thousands of years before christianity, life was constant life and death struggle with nature, solstice marked the return of the sun and life... The_Squid Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 Who said they were pagan? What has been stated is that someone (the church?) took pagan symbols and traditions when Xmas was created. No one said that they believed in pagan gods. To then make the leap that they are pagans is a bit of an odd assertion. Nearly everyone in this thread, as far as I can tell, celebrates the tradition of Xmas or the holiday season in some way whether they are Christians or not. Quote

wyly Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 (edited) Wyly mentioned about his ancestors...and someone also talked about celebrating the solstice (which is a pagan celebration). and I also posted not all "pagans" believed in gods of any sort, that's a misconception...atheism is not a recent concept it's as old as man....I don't celebrate xmas as a christian I celebrate a solstice festival as an atheist, a festival christians have commandeered... He mentioned pagan gods after you posted this! lol Solstice is celebrated/honoured/observed all over the world by many different cultures. I would think that it is more of a tradition, rather than religious celebration honoring pagan gods... Sheesh. Read the posts before responding with silly tripe. Just like what X'mas had become then, for some Christians. Become more of a tradition than a religious celebration honoring Jesus. Sheeshkebobs. AND, I also responded to Wyly that I wouldn't know much about pagans. Lol. At least give me the credit for admitting to my lack of knowledge about paganism, and since paganism was brought into this topic - particularly the solstice celebration - what's so surprising about my queries? Golly, you now seem to be the touchiest of the lot. I can't say boo without you finding fault or screeching about it.... Are you paying homage to the banshee? The shrieking banshee is a pagan diety, right? Goes with Loki, Valhalla etc.., having played Valkyrie Profile, those names are familiar. Read the posts before doing your "critique-ing." You end up looking more than just simply silly, what with all the goo on your face. Just an observation. This is becoming like a real pattern - everything you throw seems to be a boomerang. Guest Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Yes, they very kindly requested we didn't put up Christmas lights. The whole neighbourhood. Which in all fairness, they built. Quote

betsy Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 (edited) Yes, they very kindly requested we didn't put up Christmas lights. The whole neighbourhood. Which in all fairness, they built. If you hate those lights, why were you putting them up in the first place?? I don't get this too. I commend your neighborhood for being considerate of the Jehovahs. If someone wants to put up lights, why wouldn't they? It's not about a matter of politeness alone - the Jehovahs shouldn't be going around making that request. I think it's more a matter of consideration for others too. Not everyone share the same faith. THAT'S what's lost in translation. CONSIDERATION. It goes both ways. "Politeness" had taken on a whole new meaning these days.....just look at "correctness." I've seen children grabbing from other kids saying, "I want this....please!" Guest Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 (edited) If you hate those lights, why were you putting them up in the first place?? Not me. The wife and (grown) kids. (That is, they insist I do it) I look for any excuse not to do it, and the JWs were better than, "it's too cold". We face a field, for Pete's sake.
