WWWTT Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 MLW is hosted in America, uses an American forum engine, and is riddled with American content. Even the spammers are American. My journey into virtual Canada began long before MLW....first it was CBC Forums (now defunct), then Politics Canada, also gone. What I discovered was the neurotic world of Canada and its relationship with the United States. It is endless fun and no batteries are required. Shady Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 That doesn't happen very often here. I agree. But part of that is because our senate isn't elected. So you have a lot less people campaigning. And the people that do campaign, have to rely soley on the party itself for funding. Where as members of the house and senate south of the border, raise their own money and run their own campaigns. So you get some really good ads, and some really bad ones. Quote
Smallc Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 You're wrong p, actually. Local riding associations run their own campaigns, and you can donate just as much to the ($1100) as to the national party. Quote

August1991 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) As for China now owning US federal debt - it owns but a fraction of US debt; the largest portion of American debt is owned by - America; China owns about 8% of American debt, which hardly adds up to "ownership."8%? I'll accept your statistic, AW, without verification.Even at 8%, the US federal government has sold America's soul. China owns you. Your founding fathers would never have done such a thing and if they could have imagined such a possibility, they likely would have included this restriction in your Constitution. ---- After World War II, the US federal government also had a large debt. Ordinary Americans owned War Bonds because they believed in America. Indeed, the National Debt was presented as a measure of confidence in the nation. Nowadays, Paul Krugman compares the debt situation of Japan (1990s) and the US (2010s): property bubble, recession, liquidity trap, bank bailouts, stagnation, government indecision, lack of serious fiscal policy. Krugman ignores that the US (unlike Japan) sells its debt to foreigners and that the US (unlike Japan) is a military superpower. Because of its debt, the US must now choose between servitude, or debasing its currency. Given past history, I choose the latter - but God knows. Edited February 12, 2012 by August1991 Quote

Guest American Woman Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) 8%? I'll accept your statistic, AW, without verification. Even at 8%, the US federal government has sold America's soul. China owns you. So if you had a corporation and you owned 68.5% of the stock and the rest was divided up among several other people - the next highest stock owner holding 8% - you would say the person owning 8% of the stock "owned" the company? Ran the company? American has not "sold its soul." It's a myth that is constantly being perpetuated. Your founding fathers would never have done such a thing and if they could have imagined such a possibility, they likely would have included this restriction in your Constitution. I'm not sure how you feel you can get into the heads of our founding fathers, but this is the way the world does business in the 21st century. And fyi, Japan owns almost the same amount of debt that China does - as China owns less than it used to. After World War II, the US federal government also had a large debt. Ordinary Americans owned War Bonds because they believed in America. Indeed, the National Debt was presented as a measure of confidence in the nation. Americans still own bonds. Americans still believe in America. The other nations that own our debt have confidence in the nation. Nowadays, Paul Krugman compares the debt situation of Japan (1990s) and the US (2010s): property bubble, recession, liquidity trap, bank bailouts, stagnation, government indecision, lack of serious fiscal policy.Krugman ignores that the US (unlike Japan) sells its debt to foreigners and that the US (unlike Japan) is a military superpower. -TSS- Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 I must admit that this thread has made me think if I am a prisoner of my own prejudices. The way I observed the ad was that a silly Asian bimbo was saying that let's throw all the money away and that's fun. Then a wise white man comes and says that let's not do that, that's just not clever. That's the way I saw the ad. Perhaps the people who this ad was targetted towards are more broad-minded and don't see any Asian/white-thing but just a silly person and a clever person. However, in Europe, especially in England, if you ran an ad where there is a clever person and an idiot and if the clever person was a white man you better make sure that the idiot is also a white man. Otherwise there would be an unimaginable outcry. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) I must admit that this thread has made me think if I am a prisoner of my own prejudices. Perhaps the people who this ad was targetted towards are more broad-minded and don't see any Asian/white-thing but just a silly person and a clever person. The Asian is supposed to be a citizen of China, saying 'throw all your money and your jobs at China' - that's the accusation being made against Debbie Stabenow, that she is outsourcing our jobs and money to China - and making the Chinese happy rather than making us happy. The Chinese woman isn't a bimbo saying 'let's throw all the money away and that's fun' - she's saying keep your money and jobs coming to China. However, in Europe, especially in England, if you ran an ad where there is a clever person and an idiot and if the clever person was a white man you better make sure that the idiot is also a white man. Otherwise there would be an unimaginable outcry. She's not an idiot - the insult is aimed at Debbie Stabenow, the current Senator - and it's a matter of perception as to whether or not "the white man" is "clever."
