bush_cheney2004 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 The Asian is supposed to be a citizen of China, saying 'throw all your money and your jobs at China' - that's the accusation being made against Debbie Stabenow,.... Yes, there is a pre-existing context that somebody outside of Michigan or even the United States may not understand. President Obama and other national politicians have made even more pointed claims about exporting American jobs abroad, specifically to China. Hoekstra is trying to unseat the incumbent, a difficult task. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Moonlight Graham Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 The Asian is supposed to be a citizen of China, saying 'throw all your money and your jobs at China' - that's the accusation being made against Debbie Stabenow, that she is outsourcing our jobs and money to China - and making the Chinese happy rather than making us happy. The Chinese woman isn't a bimbo saying 'let's throw all the money away and that's fun' - she's saying keep your money and jobs coming to China. Exactly. What TSS says isn't the problem with the ad. The problem is that the ad uses embarrassingly stereotypical elements to portray the Chinese, ie: the "Chinese" music, the woman with the bad accent and broken engrish. Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.
Shady Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 Fair enough, but I just wanted to point out that Canadian politics often invokes the terrible "American style" bogeyman. So why can't Hoekstra do it with China? Exactly. It's funny to watch some of the members in this forum decry the use of China in political ads. When every couple of years, that's all the NDP and Liberal political campaings churn out, is ads referring to American-style this, and American-style that, and American influence this, and American influence that. The hypocrisy meter has been utterly destroyed! Even at 8%, the US federal government has sold America's soul. China owns you. That's just not true. In fact, China NEEDS a strong American economy. Without it, their economic growth ceases to be strong, and all of a sudden they have a massive problem with an influx of rural migrants to urban areas without jobs. China needs America much more than America needs China. Quote

olpfan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 Finland or Canada...it doesn't matter. They are conditioned to see America and Americans in ways that reinforce their stereotypes. And Americans are conditioned to ignore what's going on in the world. The only other country that exists to them is Mexico. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 And Americans are conditioned to ignore what's going on in the world. The only other country that exists to them is Mexico. It's easy for America to ignore Canada, much harder to ignore Mexico. Canada is only 8% of the Norte America population. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
olpfan1 Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 I guess Canada has a similar little brother-complex to the US as we in Finland have to Sweden. Both countries mirror their achievements in comparison to the "big brother" who often does not take the slightest notice whatever the kid brother has been doing. Yes, It seems like that...but when it comes to hockey Sweden clearly pwns Finland! just saying Quote

jbg Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Man that clip is freekin hallarious! Much like a raving lunatic rambling downtown blaming the European economic crisis on some passing pigeons pecking away at some bread crumbs. Just freekin hallarious! WWWTT Actually in the context of our traditions it's not a bad ad. In our country the mainstream wants less government, not more. Even when they don't realize the extent of benefits they do receive. MiddleClassCentrist Posted February 13, 2012 Author Report Posted February 13, 2012 Exactly. What TSS says isn't the problem with the ad. The problem is that the ad uses embarrassingly stereotypical elements to portray the Chinese, ie: the "Chinese" music, the woman with the bad accent and broken engrish. And the fact that such a racist ad is meant to be taken seriously... for political gain. Quote Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.

China needs America much more than America needs China. China doesnt need a strong US economy per say. They need access to US consumers but they dont care whether those consumers are earning good wages at good jobs in a strong economy, or if that consumption is financed by debt. China is nicely positioned here, because they are both the bank, and the store. They lend Americans money to spend in their store. The reality is the relationship as it exists now is only good for either side in the short term, and pretty bad for both sides in the long term. Quote I question things because I am human. The mainstream voted for all of that growth in government, and all that spending, and they will do it again in the next election. Candidates that focus on shrinking the government, its securities forces, and its programs are basically laughed at and treated like crazy people. In the current republican primary the only candidate running on fiscal conservatism and small government is DEAD LAST. Quote I question things because I am human.
