It's worth resurrecting this thread, since the rise of the right wing evangelical Christian nationalists in the U.S. are definitive proof that you can turn an established religion's 2000 years of history on its head, and still call yourself a Christian!

Every religion (and non-religion) can have its dangerous, belligerent extremist groups, and can find reasons to make their religion line up with their own goals and desires.

Agreed! I like the Bill Maher quip:

If Palin thinks the Pope is too liberal, ‘wait until she sees what Jesus has been saying’

The whole rise of what is collectively termed "prosperity gospel" is interwoven into the fabric of most right wing Christian groups today even though it is a complete heresy that can only pick out a few isolated examples and even misrepresent them: the Parable of the Talents for one....it's typically used to prove that Jesus was a capitalist...and likely would be an investment banker if he lived under present conditions. The thousands of verses in New and Old Testaments condemning the rich and calling for help for the poor, are glossed over because they don't fit the goals of egotistical evangelists.

Anybody who believers exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist.

I will not disparage Christianity because of a "few" or "many" zealots:

Good Christian Sarah Palin Poses With ‘Fuc_ You Michael Moore’ Crosshairs Sign

Is that not the point of this forum?

Yes, it's his way to show that Muslim extremists aren't the only extremists. Cause you know, holding up a piece of cardboard is pretty scary stuff!

Any promotion of supernatural delusion is worthy of disparagement. It's like malware - it makes everything sluggish and stupid.

Agreed. Michael Moore is not supernatural. Only his eating habits are.

I think it makes a fair point about a certain brand of modern-day Christian. Trying to deflect it by changing the subject to Muslims is pretty lame, just as it's lame when certain other members on the forum immediately respond to criticism of Muslims by trying to shift the topic to something awful Jews have done.

As for Palin, at this point she might as well just put on a big red nose and some floppy shoes. She's rapidly turning into a punch-line.

The transformation is already complete. You can book her for your kids next birthday party.

People have such short attention spans these days that historical context has become meaningless. Three or four or more years ago, a certain someone here started a thread:"President Teleprompter" which featured Sarah taking a poke at Obama's reliance on using teleprompters during speeches. So, when Sister Sarah's teleprompter mysteriously stopped functioning at the Iowa Freedumb Summit a week or so ago, we were once again reminded of how stupid and vacuous she is unplugged!

I guess the GOP billionaires like to promote the dummies because they are:

a. easy to manipulate if and when they ever get in office.

b. they provide great comedic moments in an otherwise dour and humorless movement.

No, the point of this forum is not to drag up 3 year old threads.

Could we not drag up a 10 year old thread if there was one? After all it is a forum, didn't know there was rule against posting on old threads. Where do we draw the line 16 weeks? 5 months? A year? 1 year 7 months and 24 days? Do hours count? What about seconds?

Okay dude, get a grip. Anyone can drag up any old thread. The thing is, that's not the point of the forum. Read that again a few times.

Now read this: The point of the forum is, when something current happens, to consider starting a thread about it, not digging up the past 5 years to see if you can draw some kind of connection with a current story and a 5 year old thread.

Considering it was our esteemed Forum Facilitator who revived this thread, I don't think you have much of a case.

I think Palin typifies a certain type of politician who are comfortable showing off their religiosity as a means of obtaining support from a segment of the electorate-- she's exactly the sort who the Bible warned against in Matthew 6:5. I'm not sure that there's anything particularly Christian about her at all, aside from the fact that she keeps telling people she is.

So are you saying you can't revive an old thread with a current connection? That seems rather silly, perhaps you need to "get a grip". Reading it once was fine enough I think.

Many people in this forum are actually less pleased with having numerous threads that share common topics, to continue to start new threads with similar topics you just flood the forum with far to many threads. I'd prefer someone drags up an old discussion to continue it than to start an entirely new one when they share the same topic. As many on this forum do on a regular basis. It's just when it offends an incredibly daft right wing politician, then it becomes a no no.

Palin is a good example of what some psychologists refer to as different categories of intelligence. Because she sure as hell is not book smart...but she must have a high degree of Machiavellian intelligence, judging from her unwarranted political and media success. Her ability to manipulate the right people and carefully choose friends and enemies.....at least up till now, is brilliant! The latest word I came across on her, is that top Republican officials and moneymen want to keep her away from the next convention. Palin, and her male version - Donald Trump, have become too embarrassing for top GOP officials trying to improve their image.

To be honest, I'm confused about the rules around thread bumping myself. I will ask.

Why should there be a rule about it? Sometimes it's worthwhile to revisit a topic later on. Whether your post was a good fit for bumping this particular thread is debatable, but I don't see a reason why bumping threads in general should be against the law.
