The crisis in Egypt

I just don't understand what Cardinal Richelieu has to do with Otto Von Bismarck and united colonial Germany???

Richelieu's policy of expansion was to gain territory up to the Rhine river Rhineland, Saar and Alsace-Lorraine...but these were german territories and so began a back and forth series of wars over these lands which continued up to WW2...

this has nothing to do with being a leftist or a rightist.

this has to do with whether these people would accept becoming puppets. mossadiq no longer wanted to give out iranian oil to the u.s. and england and instead wanted to nationalize it so that the iranian people could benefit from it. for that reason, he had to go.

you could add another name to the list Stephan Harper and potash corp, should we expect an american backed coup for protecting our interests?...not that I agree with preventing the sale of potashcorp but that is essentially what happen in in Iran and Chile and a number of other third world countries where american corporate interests were threatened...

Sure because Mossadiq did'nt lean to the left and scare Big Oil and the CIA/Eisenhower...

And Salvador Allende's ideological stance was'nt a personal afront to Henry Kissinger, and the US State Department...

:blink::blink:

What's your take on Lamumba in Zaire vis a vis his murder and the installation of Mobuto Sese Seko?

Big deal!!!

Holstein-Schlesswig was disputed territory with Denmark on the Jutland Penninsula...That was satisfied in the early 1860's...

I know all about the coal regions along the Rhine...

It has very little to do with Fance invading an increasingly powerful colonial Germany in 187o.That had to do with French arrogance and insecurity about no longer being the economic power on the continent...

Little,or nothing,to do with Mr.Richilieu...

It might be helpful to focus on the crisis in Egypt. If I am in need of historical information I am sure that is available elsewhere. There is a lot of extraneous information exchanged here.

I agree...

See post #562...

I'm all for discussing historical events, but I did'nt want to hijack this thread...

I saw a protest today here in Waterloo, it was suprising to see Egyptian flags and protest going on by students who must be from influential families going on right infront of my eyes in Canada.

There was a sizable protest too, like the size you see for a moderate size protest from Canadians about Canadian issues......

It is protest in effigy - I'm very nuetral on this issue, but I'm suprised anti government protests are going on here in Canada - by what must be the priveleged people of Egypt.

---

Or maybe this protest was by Canadians.... due to being against the government of Egypt.

Regardless why protest in the middle of a University if you can protest at city hall or infront of government of canada buildings?

A large group of egyptians linked to militant protests in egypt actually made me exercise caution and had me question my own safety. (being circumsized and growing my hair like an orthodox jew.)

It doesn't belong on campus - target politicians not students.

I think it is totally fine and a right to protest, but it is still distressing... I don't need stress.

I can respect both sides of this situation.

lol as if the Danes could do anything about it...

I hate to quote wiki but ...
From 1635 to 1748, Richelieu and Louis XIV undertook an expansion of the frontiers of the kingdom towards the north and towards the Rhine.
this expansion and german national awakening made the rhineland territories key points of agitation between France and Germany the territories flipping back and forth with each war...

Have you considered establishing a new topic perhaps touching on the History of Western Civilization ?

ah.

most of the people you have mentioned went against the foreign corporations who wanted to profit in their state. mossadiq, allende and even lamumba all were nationalists who put the interest of the people before the interest of foreign corporations.

The Danes certainly did...They went to war over it...And lost!

They regained some of that territory as part of the Treaty of Versailles...

I did'nt say the coal region was'nt impotant. It was a background issue vis avis the Franco-Prussian War...It was a minor reason that France Instigated a war with Germany...

And it has little,or nothing,to do with Otto Von Bismarck and the Germany of the time...

But this is entirely off topic...If you want to discuss the Franco-Prussian War and it's relevance to the Traety of Versailles, please be my guest...

Yes..

They were also Leftists...Allende was a self admitted Socialist...

So was Lamumba....So was Mossadiq....

Again,this is completely off topic...

Perhaps another thread?

In that case...it is totally worth it! ;)

"I got slammed against the gates and was threatened by one of the pro-Mubarak protesters who was ... telling me to 'get out, get out!" Gorani said. "The pro-Mubaraks, whoever they are, whoever sent them, are being threatening toward camera crews, journalists, anybody who looks like they may be onlookers."

Hours later, as he walked past raucous Mubarak backers toward the Tahir Square, the hub of Wednesday's confrontations, Cooper said one man suddenly came out and tried to grab his cameraman's camera, screaming at them and pushing.

That triggered what the CNN host called a "mob," which swarmed around Cooper and his two colleagues. They turned to head back, doing so only after getting hit repeatedly by fists and bottles, with some men trying to rip clothing off a female CNN producer. Egyptian soldiers positioned nearby, he claimed, saw the chaos unfold but did nothing.

This is true,however...

What are we going to do if,as is my fear, the Islamofascist's take control of Egypt and other Arab nations in fairly rapid order?

Do you know where your Islamofascist's came from, why they're even on the scene? They metastasized, seemingly out of nothing, like Hitler did.

Because,if that happens,we WILL be involved, whether we want to or not....

I bet there are plenty of us who can't wait to get it on.

I would think that would be pretty darn swell. Hell, cut off all the foreign aid to the middle east (including Israel).

i like that. the same rule goes for israel and the $3 billion they receive.

I see no need to cut Israel off because an Egyptian autocrat is wasting our money.

No. Report your tantrum to the mods please.

Who died and left you Queen?

You promised us your "run" was about "over" here. To quote the Egyption demonstrators, "get out".

I promised you nothing...go shut down another Canadian forum just for fun like you did before.

I have no interest in shutting this or any board down. On reflection I probably should have handled things differently back in March 2004.

...at which point the pendulum or wrecking-ball is more like it, simply started swinging over other people's heads.

Campus protests, whether effectively or not, are for the sake of opening people's eyes to the situation.
