Shady Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Ok, so Prime Minister Brown arrives in Washington to continue the special relationship between America and Britain. Brown, following tradition, presents Obama with some special gifts. A pen holder made from an anti-slave ship, a framed commission for the HMS Resolute, and a first edition Churchill biography. Obama then presents his gift to Brown. 25 dvds. Yep, 25 dvds. No, I'm not making this up, 25 dvds. To my special friend Gordon, 25 DVDs The Prime Minister gave Mr Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet. The unique present delighted Mr Obama because oak from the Gannet's sister ship, HMS Resolute, was carved to make a desk that has sat in the Oval Office in the White House since 1880. Mr Brown also handed over a framed commission for HMS Resolute and a first edition of the seven-volume biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert. Link And if this wasn't enough... Barack Obama sends bust of Winston Churchill on its way back to Britain A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back. The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure. But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks." Link Stay classy Mr. President! Quote

Oleg Bach Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Yeah, we can't wait for more from the diplomatic Three Stooges! Don't take glee when the mighty and their representatives fall...be good now. All empires rise and fall they lose it all...so my song goes. Don't worry it is all coming out in the wash - having to wait for 4o years for them to come to their slow senses is a bit like being Moses - wandering about then never getting to see the promised land - well this time it's different. We all will see the promised land ......"I have a dream.....scratch that Obama will take that one....I thought it was rather good myself. No stoodging will ever surpass the Bushies when he said into a live mike ..."Those Syrians have got to stop doing that shit" - red necks are a culture you know - and if you think that it is a great country that a black man is president - well - look at the fact that white trash trailer parkers achieved this wonderful goal years ago - Clinton - Bush and so on...America is great - anyone can grow up to be president! August1991 Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Obama has more pressing problems than the visit of a UK PM. The UK PM knows this (as does our own PM who made no complaint of the fast in/out visit of Obama to Canada. Did Harper even get a gift? Harper to Obama? I would have suggested maple syrup.) IMHO, this is a drive by of UK MSM on Brown. It says nothing about Obama. Quote

(Maybe Obama just thought that he should continue his own agenda despite a financial meltdown. That's what I think - Obama is clueless and he's beginning to understand that welfare/health reform will take second place to bank questions.) Presidents don't choose their agenda. Ask Bush Jnr, or Carter. The success of a President is how they deal with the unexpected. (Look at Truman.) Edited March 10, 2009 by August1991 Quote

jdobbin Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Yep, 25 dvds. No, I'm not making this up, 25 dvds. This is what Republicans are concerned about? Do you want a list of gifts given out during George Bush's 8 years? It is an interesting and funny list but says nothing of Bush's shopping choices. The choices are suggested by the Chief of Protocol, an officer from the State department. The President usually just accepts those choices. It isn't like a President can nip out and buy something. George Bush Sr. once revealed to the press that he had placed his wallet in a secure spot because he no longer had the luxury or the safety of going out in public to do something as simple as shop. This point was painfully obvious when Clinton people tried to point out that Bush didn't know the cost of things anymore because after 12 years, he had not had to crack open his wallet to pay for anything. Most gifts given out end up being tagged and placed in storage. It probably wouldn't have mattered what gift was chosen to give to the visiting PM. If it had been extravagant, the British press would hammed Brown on his inadequacy and that it reflected the relationship between the U.S. and Britain. In any event, the story that the British press wanted to frame was that the relationship was now a poorer one. Stay classy Mr. President! Since Lincoln now occupies the spot where Churchill sat, Republicans are overplaying their hand on this. Moreover, the British erred thinking that Obama would want Churchill who was responsible for suppressing a rebellion in Kenya that led to the torture of Obama's grandfather. Classy. Quote
sharkman Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 (edited) No kidding dobbin, what did you think, Brown would sit down with a bowl of popcorn and watch 25 dvds? I guess the moment is lost on you, the PM of America's greatest ally comes for his first visit and gets 25 free dvds. How crass. Obama's gross inexperience is rising like cream to the top, and this incident is but a small one when compared to the many others in the 'seat of the pants' strategy he is employing. Shortly after his inauguration he writes a letter to Russia offering to remove a missile defense system if they will help him keep Iran from getting nukes. For some reason he assumed Russia would welcome the messiah with open arms. Instead they leak the letter, embarrassing the president badly, since he didn't even bother to talk to the countries in which the defense systems reside. Then there is the Reset button fiasco, again with Russia. Hilary meets with some Russian minister and presents a gift, which is a reset button and is supposed to represent a new start with Russia(done at a press conference with cameras rolling). Most of the MSM didn't even mention the fact that the button was labeled with the russian word for overcharge, which the minister mentioned to Hilary who then cackled like a donkey. sharkman Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 No, I am well aware that nothing will be sticking for at least the next 2 years. That is not the point. The point is what damage will be done by an inexperienced president in 2 years. Quote

In many years, Tony Blair and George Bush gave no gifts on official visits. On another time, Blair gave Bush a sweater. Um, yeah. A sweater. The entire gift giving is usually kind of weird. All gifts have to be reported and it is usually a hilarious list. Quote
