Let's come back to this thread in 20 years, then we'll have an idea what kind of success it was. By that time we'll actually see some self-determination on the Iraqis' part, with the US (mostly) gone. Should be interesting to see if they embrace democracy. my hopes arent high

Exactly how many U.S. presidential candidates since the invention of the a-bomb have ever had experience with nukes? Not too many i'd gather. Not exactly a popular hobby, like building train sets in your basement. -

BINGO! That's how i feel on the subject. Why don't we encourage people who are already Canadians to have more kids? The cost to bring in an unskilled immigrant, teach them english or french, provide them social programs, health care, welfare they've paid little or nothing into is draining for us, so why not use that money and give it to mothers that are already in Canada and encourage larger families. I say bring in the valuable immigrants, and keep the ones who offer nothing to Canada but future tax revenue from their grandchildren out of here. You drive through low income slums and they are filled with visible minorities, and they are a drain on the system. I don't blame them for wanting to come to Canada, and the ones that are refugees are a different story whom i don't mind coming here, but how about Canada is first for a change? -
I will say that most of our exchanges have been mostly civil, i will certainly give you that. However, its seems that some of the times if i have spoken about some kind of skeptic claim that would be against the AGH view i get a piece of the waldo lip beatdown. Past history certainly does play a factor i know, that's the case for all of us on here. But you certainly have a ferocious disdain for other scientific viewpoints that don't match your own. What i'm just trying to say is that if you counter these "drive-by's" and skeptic claims with an informed rebuttal, you'd actually be more successful in swaying their opinion than all this bickering. Screw it, i don't even know why i even care. You just seem like a smart and well-informed person who is wasting his arguments on these types of threads.

This whole issue of CAS and how children can be abused by their parents in different ways is EXTREMELY complex. First off, CAS is not evil. It may sometimes do some bad things, and children taken by parents and put in group homes or foster homes have certainly had negative experiences and outcomes and is generally not ideal. However, after working at a community center that had to deal with CAS in some cases, and dealt with clients who has been through the system and dealt with CAS themselves, i can say that CAS generally does tries to do what is right for the children and protect them. The OP speaks about parents who physically discipline their children, but there are many different reasons why CAS will take a child from the parents. Sexual abuse, violent physical abuse, emotional/psychological abuse stemming from many different things, and simply horrific parenting that seriously affects the development and well-being of the child (ie: not feeding them, tying them up, and making them do other horrible things most people honestly couldn't even imagine). In short, some kids live in absolute hell and unfortunately must be separated from their abusive/incompetent parents. Statistics about kids who are in group/foster homes are difficult to analyze. You can't just say something like "20% of kids in group care have tried to commit suicide" or "X number of kids in foster care don't graduate from high school" and blame it on CAS or the group/foster systems. These kids have been scarred by the actions of their parents. A child who is sexually abused by their parents is going to have a negative affect on them throughout their time growing up, and this will affect certainly have an affect on the likelihood they will finish high school or try to commit suicide whether they stay with their abusive parents are grow up in foster care. As i stated at the beginning, this is an incredibly complex issue. I don't know enough about CAS or child psychology to say much more on the subject, but it is one that is very important and i'm glad it's being discussed here.

This is a really good issue to debate. I wouldn't say he's trying to appease the Republicans per say, i think he's trying to appease the large number of voters who didn't vote for him. He's trying to be everyone's President, not just the Prez of the people who voted for him. That's kind of refreshing and in a way honourable, but at the same time it shows some weakness because heaven knows the Republicans almost certainly return the favour next time they are elected. Maybe in 20 years there only be 2 center-leaning parties, and all voters will have to decide is which candidate has the better haircut.

Why not spread the money around a bit? It's not like Haiti is the freaking epicenter for poverty and human suffering in the world. On the other hand, Canada has had some role in the crap the Haitians have had to go through over the years, so maybe we owe them.

You know, if you actually debated people here with a little more respect your arguments would be a lot more effective.
