  1. Harper is in favour of mandatory sentencing for gun crime. That means increased gun/crime control. He's not a fan of the long gun registry. The only thing the registry has shown is that criminals don't register their long arms either. Go figure. The registry works out to $200,000 per registered long gun homicide/per year. That's a lot to spend on tracking gun crimes and money that would be better spent on prevention. There are police commissions that have said it is completely useless for the reason that it is unreliable and if you can never assume someone doesn't have a gun. For officers that do, the registry only puts their lives in danger.
  2. I think you're onto something.
  3. Motivations for criminals vary. As far as gangs go, the need to belong and esteem needs are more relevant. Welfare does play a needed role as it stops people from having to steal a loaf of bread. Welfare, however, will never fill people with pride. It will never buy a BMW. It will never impress the chicks. Though I'd say prisons aren't the answer for all criminal types, for violent gang members they are the best answer.
  4. For example:
  5. Right after he jumped from an airplane and landed safely in a bowl of soup.
  6. The Green Shift was an attempt at a political solution. The hope was that Canadians would hop onto the shift taxes to things we don't want bandwagon. The problem is that it doesn't translate to the real world. In the real world corporations exist to make profits for their shareholders, so the idea that they'll just take one on the chin and not just pass the buck on to the consumer is simply stupid. So really all it is is a change to the way the government collects taxes. And that's not broken.
  7. More accurate would be: Just like Bush, Joesixpack5 loves weed. See you're just like George Bush.
  8. So you will be voting YES to a carbon tax?
  9. There are several land sales that were defaulted on, but Douglas Creek Estates wasn't one of them. Payment was made and a crown deed was issued. Please explain how it then is "their land."
  10. A high CO2 level does not equal no environment.
  11. Dinosaurs didn't become extinct due to global warming. But you are right, if the sky really falls and Earth is hit with another large asteroid, we could easily become extinct. Are you open to an asteroid tax to pay for R&D into a defense shield?
  12. I once had to take a whiz during Take me out to the ball game. I don't recall being thrown out.
  13. A solution would be to limit the number of innings a pitcher could pitch to two or three. Game on.
  14. If you do nothing all the time, sometimes you'll be right. If Chretien would have stood in the UN and persuaded its member nations to remove Hussein for his defiance of UN resolutions or persuaded the US to not to go to war, maybe you could characterize his actions as a 'glimmer of brilliance.' Chretien blames Khandahar on Martin. He did save a pile of money correcting the Kyoto mistake.
  15. From article: Someone should really tell our athletes that we're boycotting. Chretien confirms it.
  16. The fact is that Canada isn't boycotting the Olympics. Out athletes are there. Our government is there. If the Chinese are insecure we could point out that Canadian PMs don't always attend the Olympics or give them footage so they can digitally place him in the crowd. Maybe the footage could be of him sucking on his inhaler for his asthma so it looks authentic.
  17. That's because Canadians are fed "if we don't do something drastic by 2012 we're doomed." The reality is whether we meet our targets today or in 50 years it really doesn't make a difference to the environment. If you asked them "Do you want to sacrifice your income for no reason at all?" you'd likely get a different answer You forgot creating a health care crisis and stealing taxpayer money.
  18. When exactly did NASA become the media? And here's something interesting: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard...ew-ice-age-1971 A few people on the net have claimed David Suzuki was a keynote speaker at the U of T in 1976. His topic: Global Cooling: The Coming of the Next Ice age. So, if true, the media also did say it. Of course, he's a scientist now.
  19. The committee really needs to answer two questions: Was there a loophole? (Yes) Should it be closed? (Yes) Done.
  20. ...and the decade before we were headed for another ice age.
  21. Let me guess. You're naked and looking in the mirror. That's nice. Not relevant though. How many repeat offenders are there? Mandatory sentencing does two things to gangs. It can decrease their current membership and ability to attract new members, making the lifestyle more risky than rewarding. Might actually provide incentives for parents to get involved.
  22. If you want to get gangs of the streets, mandatory sentencing is needed. It also provides a clear deterrent. If you do this crime, you go to jail, no ifs, ands or buts.
  23. You mean propping up the Canadian economy, health care and our social programs don't you? Don't you value these things? Without oil, Canada won't be able to pay its bills. If you think we'll just be able to replace the revenue with another source, you're naive. Hopefully, we never have to look back and say we gave up everything we valued for no reason. That's the danger of hopping on the alternative energy bandwagon. It will make our economy obsolete. The debate should still be whether the 'evidence' of man-made global warming warrants drastic action. The worst case scenario is that man will have to adapt, which it will likely need to from natural warming and shifting regardless, judging from the past. Just in case, it might be a good idea to build the world's largest tower in the NWT to house those displaced. That way, it can serve as a monument of stupidity should this scare go down in history like the ice age scare of the past.
  24. Looks like they finally caught the other citizen who was providing security. http://www.thespec.com/News/article/405306
  25. You choices are: 1. Take twenty and give back none (energy sector) 2. Take forty (energy sector) and get back 10 from the government.
