Having the right to impose your will upon others, in cases of self defense is a very broad point of view, I have been finding. And have come to the conclusion, it would only be acceptable if it was a direct immediate situation. Other than that, any actions against others in society for a perceived threat, no matter by how many, is wrong and a serious threat to that democracy.

Much less mecury than many many other things. The plastics on the body are used for 10+ years, 20 in my case. While the plastic wrapping on the incandescent bulbs gets used by uyou every couple of moths say nothing of the bag to bring them home. Absolutely not, they give great light. So do incandescents give eye strain, and the CFL do not give the headaches of overhead lights. Have never had a problem, nor have I heard of fires from CFL's. Uh, the ones I have ever used do work with timers and just got a dimmer compatable one for my dinning room. Uh the much heavier analogy does not work when you consider the shipping costs for all the candescents used in 10+ years. -
Yes they do, particulariliy when you realize they meet all 10 of the criteria, though actually there is according to Chris Hedges 14 and that all 14 are met. But anyway the number is inconsequential. But here are the 10 Naomi speaks of: 1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy. 2. Create a gulag. 3. Develop a thug caste. 4. Set up an internal surveillance system. 5. Harass citizens' groups. 6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release. 7. Target key individuals. 8. Control the press. 9. Dissent equals treason. 10. Suspend the rule of law. Now Hedge's, in his book, "American Fascism" details the way, or manner, in which society is subverted into allowing fascist thought/actions to take hold of them. It is well worth the read, and it is startling in its expose.

I started using CFL's back in the mid-late 80's when they first came out. And they were a heck of a lot more expensive than today at $15.00 each, or sometimes $11.00 on sale. I bought a 3-4 a month and put them in high use areas. In the first billing period, as it is 2 months, my hydro was $60 less than the previous year at that time, and rates had even gone up. All the light bulbs were paid for within 2 billing periods by saved hydro consumption. I certainly like the money in my pocket, as opposed to wasting it on hydro, and wasting hydro. Saving 700.00+ a year on electricity is nothing to sneeze at,, especially when you can change your home lighting system for about 45-60 bucks. And that expense is a one time thing for perhaps decades. As I still have, and am using, those very same CFL's today, I have lost 2, one through breakage when moving and the very first one burned out just a few months back. They are 20+ years old and I have never had a problem with with them. In this length of time, I would've spent 20k more on hydro, and way more on incandescent bulbs, than I did on the CFL's purchase. Watch/hearing aid/camera batteries are replaced every year at least, the mecury threat from them is significantly higher than CFL's in fact our teeth are more polluting that CFL's. -

I absolutely agree we do have the right to defend ourselves, when attacked directly, if possible that is. If someone comes into your home shooting, it is unlikely you will be able to; get to your gun, get the bullets, get the bullets in, and the trigger lock off, and aim and shoot, before you are shot. But truthfully how often does that really happen? Moreover, you will find women by the majority, when faced with harm to themselves, their children will try and protect by the use of violence, if required. This "feminizing of society, non-logic would try and say it is women who are fault for societal ills, war and student violence because of seeking equality and calling for diplomacy and consensus as opposed to constant warfare and watching children die. Men were long the diplomats, seeking diplomatic solutions to end war, since their was war, the art of diplomacy is no "new" thing brought upon society as an evil, by women gaining equality The largest single source of deaths by gunfire, other than war, and gang related shootings, are women being shot, by someone who professed to love them. That really is situation selective violence now isn't it? Violence to meet violence, might be appropriate one time, while diplomacy and negotiations are better at others, or silence is even better at other times.Violence meeting violence never creates a solution, it creates more violence. Hmmm, that seems like a double dilema, and not quite logical, as what if you reside on land, or own something that was not honestly gotten in the first place, for you to have ownership of it? Do you then feel, that those who had their possessions taken dishonestly, and by force, should meet back with force, to get that which was theirs, but taken dishonestly and sold to another? Yes, I agree, and the correct way to this is by; critical thinking skills, informing oneself with truth, even if it is unpleasent to comprehend, take thoughtful actions, as opposed to negative kneejerk reactions, holding your elected officials accountable, and by creating an actual electoral system that represents fairly the will of the people, such as proportional representation, plus numerous other non-violent ways. It is not bearing arms and marching upon Ottawa. What exactly is the weakness in men that you are speaking about, that you label as complancent? -
JACK LAYTON: Votes not to end Afghanistan mission
Catchme replied to wendy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The NDP would not stay away from the vote on the Liberal motion. as they are asking, and have been asking for immediate withdrawl of the military's counter insurrency mission, why would they let it pass, as it actually, in its wording, extended the counterinsurrgency mission past February 2009, just not in the south. And it stated nothing about reconstruction and development. Moreover, the NDP tabled a motion today, to be voted on Monday, asking for the immediate and secure withdrawing of the military in their counter insurgency mission. As follows is part of the brief: They in fact are not asking for us to leave Afghanis to a failed state destroyed by the occupiers, they are asking that the mission become what it was, when it was sold to Canadians by the Liberals, reconsruction and development. And that is a very good querstion, if the Liberals and the Greens and the Bloq feel it is the wrong reason wrong mission, why do they want our military, and innocent Afghans, in harms way for 2 more years? Part of the actual motions is: (1) all Members of this House, whatever their disagreements about the mission in Afghanistan, support the courageous men and women of the Canadian Forces; (2) the government has admitted that the situation in Afghanistan can not be won militarily; (3) the current counter-insurgency mission is not the right mission for Canada; (4) the government has neither defined what ‘victory’ would be, nor developed an exit strategy from this counter-insurgency mission; therefore this House condemns this government and calls for it to immediately notify NATO of our intention to begin withdrawing Canadian Forces now in a safe and secure manner from the counter-insurgency mission in Afghanistan; and calls for Canada to focus its efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan on a diplomatic solution, and re-double its commitment to reconstruction and development. http://www.ndp.ca/page/5205 -
The Feminizing of Western Civilization
Catchme replied to August1991's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
The premise espoused in the originating post, is apparently a personal opinion, that appears to be derived from personal bias, as opposed to concrete facts. Perhaps they have been reading too much Rushdoony? First, the premise that "feminizing of men" is causing a violent society has no basis in fact, either currently with studies, or historical record. In fact, it is indictive of many things, non eof them good. Historically, men have been what was outlined as effiminate on a much broader scale than today. And not that very long ago either. The rigours of nation building in NA, brought "today's blue jeaned men to the norm. Prior to that, men were fashion plates, they wore cute little heeled pumps with sparkly buckles, wore wigs, had yards of lace at collar and cuffs, powdered their faces, wore beauty patches, long hair tied at the end with ribbons, they wore bright colours in velvet and satin. Even in this "femine" attire, or togas, or kilts, men have been the aggressors, while the women have been the peace builders, that is proven historically and currently by studies and observation. Second, Professer Leyton a world renowned expert on serial and mass murderers has shown in 1 books that when countries are involved in war, the offshot at home is violent actions of the type conducted by the disturbed young man who murdered those at Virgina Tech. Another factor is racial intolerance and bigotry. War propaganda, violent movies and videos are also contributors. Third, this trying to cognatively link the world's problems to women's equality goes deeper than that, as it is the mind actually looking for a scapegoat, as opposed to taking ownership of actions by one self or society at large. Fourth, the mentality that holds that pacifism is colluding with the enemy, believes that life is permanent warfare. And that is a fallacy, no matter the gender holding it to be truth. Though historically it is the male gender that believes this erroneous state of existence, not the female gender, there have been a few examples of women. Fifth, fear is the driving force behind the blame game reactionary thinker, as well as not taking responsibility of actions. Traditionalists long for an utopia in the past that never existed, but the past is known to them, unlike the future. Thus it is about control, and you can only control what is past, not what is in the future unless you make it the same as the past, failed state that the past may have been. Sixth, the male "heroic" distain and intolerance of women is an attempt to have control over sex, as everything else is really beyond the control of an individual. The more out of control they feel the world is, the more they want to control women aka sex. Seventh, there have always been homsexuals, and plenty of them were powerful men and conquered nations and peoples. It has nothing to do with women seeking equality. Again, for the most part, IMV, those who want to control the sex lives of others, have an inability to cope with a world they cannot control and have fear of. Or they desire constant warfare until such a time as there is a; 'end of all things war' and they long in their minds to be the hero, they never realize they are killing others in their haste to die as a hero. The hero complex could be a military accomplishment, or be the chosen ones who were 'right' and who are swept up in the mythical rapture, or they could believe they are getting 70 virgins. Nevertheless, the driving force behind this cognative dissonance of blamming women for the world's current ills is erroneous and nonsensical as a belief system. -
JACK LAYTON: Votes not to end Afghanistan mission
Catchme replied to wendy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Back to the topic, yes the NDP did vote No, and continue to call for immediate withdrawal, as they have from the beginning. The Liberal motion was of the most spurious sort, and not worth the expending of taxpayers money. It was a smoke and mirrors ploy, of the worst sort, playing politics with innocent Afghan lives and Canadian military personal, their family and communities lives. Not that the CPC are any better, indeed they are worse, for keeping them there, and for trying to cover up their knowing about prisoner torture and executions without trial. And finally being forced, after lying at length to Canadians, though the Freedom of Information Act, to fessing up. This is heinious on their part, not only are we in breach of the Geneva Convention we are in breach of contract with Afghan peoples. But will not go off further than outlining this the reasons, why Jack Layton and the NDP are absolutely, correct in calling for withdraw immediately. The Liberals refused to make the ammendments the NDP asked for in order to support the motion. The Liberals wanted this motion to fail, they were not serious with it in the first place. They wanted to create a wedge issue to use for headlines against the NDP. This was to try and depict the NDP as propping up the CPC. The NDP would not vote for the motion for several reasons: 1. They recognize this situation in Afghanistan is out of control and being mishandled by the Defense Minister and the CPC, they have proven grossly incompetant, and Canadian lives are being lost, many more permently disabled and in order to stop this, the only way is, is to have immediate withdrawing. And they recognize the only way innocent Afghans will stop dying, at Canadians hands, is by our leaving. It is a shame, Canada's good regard around the world is being destroyed by the CPC. 2. The Liberal motion only stated that our military presence would be moved out of the "southern" portion of Afghanistan and not Afghanistan itself in February 2009. 3. The NDP actually want the government to work and stop the nonsense games being undertaken by the Liberals and the CPC, Canadians lives are being lost, families and communities devastated while they are playing games. 4. They recognize what the situation in Afghanistan is, and that truthfully Afghans want the occupiers from their lands, and that the actions of the military, are not the mission Canadians agreed to when it was undertaken, and as a result all Canadians are complicit with the crimes being committed against Afghans, that at best are being conducted with the "new" Canadian government and military in full knowledge and they want it to stop immediately and investigations to begin. -

Again why were the police slagging bodies out by the ankles and legs, they disrupted the crime and disrepected the bodies? -

Again for your closer reading, scotta, as perhaps critical thinking skills are beyond you, the man is a world renowned expert on serial killers of this type. His life time works shows quite clearly the relationship between war and violence and this type of activity, and it also shows intolerance towards others is a huge factor. Halmarks of the USA right now are war and increased intolerance. And it is increasing in Canada driven by those like yourself, who are, or appear to be intolerant xenophobes. He has 11 books out on his studies, and findings, how many do you have? Elliott Leyton Ph.D. (born 1939 in Leader, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian social-anthropologist, educator and author who, according to the CTV television News network, is probably the world's most widely consulted expert on serial homicide. A research Fellow at Queen's University of Belfast in Ireland, Professor Leyton has held faculty positions there and at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario; University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland; Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel; and at Memorial University of Newfoundland where he is Professor Emeritus of anthropology. Professor Leyton has served as president of the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association. Leyton earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of British Columbia then went on to obtain his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Toronto in 1972. During his ensuing career, he dedicated himself to the analysis and research of social ills such as juvenile delinquency and the psychology behind perpetrators of serial killings. Leyton's achieved level of expertise has led to his giving lectures at the College of Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ottawa. The author/editor of eleven books and numerous scholarly essays for academic journals, Professor Leyton 's 1986 landmark study Hunting Humans is an international bestseller in multiple languages that was reprinted in 1995 and again in 2005. It won the 1987 Arthur Ellis Award for best new crime book. Professor Leyton travelled to Rwanda in the fall of 1996 where he studied the Rwandan genocide that spawned his 1998 book, Touched By Fire: Doctors Without Borders in a Third World Crisis. In 2004, a National Film Board of Canada film about Professor Leyton's life's work titled The Man Who Studies Murder, was premiered at the Montreal Film Festival and aired on CBC Television’s The Nature of Things. Frequently consulted by the media, Professor Leyton was interviewed by CBC Newsworld on September 14th, 2006 about the Dawson College shooting in Montreal. He stated that because all three such murderous rampages in Quebec involved a killer who was either an immigrant or a child of immigrants, it warranted an examination of government and societal attitudes that can profoundly impact immigrant perceptions and hence their conduct. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Leyton Leyton on the recent Virgina shooting: cbc.ca/news -

Actually scotta you are making things up in your mind. And again for the 3rd time you have defeated you own argument with: It is as relevant as yeast breeds bread. Great analogy, for my position, thank you. Now perhaps you and others should read and learn truths as opposed to false myths. Errr, pardon me, but the glorification of war has been around since, oh, 5000 BC or so, and in fact it is only since the war to end all wars that it has fallen out of favor in the western psyche. This is a rant straight out of one of Lenin's polemics matched with the entire bumper sticker litany of the "progressive" left. It's erroneous in its facts and amounts to hysterical mudflinging. It is not a rant, it is quite the truth, and you have supported it with your commentary actually. It did fall out of favour since WWI and NOW it has recommenced and NOW we are seeing the results of its resurrgence. intolerance breeds intolerance. It has absolutely nothing to do with Lenin anything, and that is a great example of a rant actually too good job scotta, you made 2 points against yourself in 2 paragraphs. In fact, it has more to do with the increasing amounts of UR (eternal) Fascism in the USA and now incoming into Canada with the advent of the radical right war/violence mongering and intolerance. -

I call absolute nonsense to both your and Argus's comments. The boys from Columbine were NOT from a broken home, they were from an entitled community. There was a school shooting in Amish community for pete's sake. These type of actions are the result of glorifaction of; war and violence, and the denigration of people's worth into nothing more than human capital at best, and scum of the earth at worst. And ALL these ideologies are derived from the right of centre, capitalistic, intolerant, war/violence mongering, misogynist, xenophobes in our society. These things are the REAL things that tamper with 'folks self respect, self worth and dignity. But good try on trying to foster the blame onto other's shoulders, when it is the military industrialiat complex and capitalists and those who uphold them like the media and persons that utilize propaganda that promotes intolerance and denigrates and diminishes peoples, who are the ones who are at fault in these types of incidences. BTW, I heard there were 2 separate shooters, and why were the cops carrying dead bodies out by their hands and ankles, that seems a tad weird, eh? -

Yes....except by the looks of it now, it will be the Green and the Libs who will pay the price. If NDP knows how to play this card well....they could very well gain a lot! Ardent environmentalists may well become NDPers. At least the NDP had always been consistent where they stand. It will be the Greens who pay the price, not the Liberals, except in Central Nova, and most certainly not the NDP. There have been 4 major defections already from Green to Liberal in the last month. 2 of them are prominent environmentalists. They will take they "green" backers with them in thier ridings, or at least though who would ever vote Liberal in the first place. The others will most likely return to the NDP, with a small core of the uninformed vote staying with the GP. May stands no chance in Central Nova, the combined GP and Liberal Votes do not even meet the 2nd place NDP votes. They should think that just because Ms MacDonald is not running this time, the NDP chances are lower. The NDP are not a finge party there, MacKay has only been winning with 6% or so, over the 2 elections. A more cogent scenario is: 1/3 or 1/2 of the Liberal vote will go NDP. None will go to MacKay, his voters is solidified, and the rest, that are the old PCers, will go to May, in an attempt to payback MacKay. However, if they really wanted to payback MacKay, then they should vote NDP as he will be gone for sure. Ms May was losing her credibility for a while now, this is just icing on the cake, or final confirmation, if you will. One can see your tepidation and point. However, at least the Liberals acknowledged and actioned the environment, perhaps not greehouse gases or emissions, but other environmental issues. May's fear is that the CPC, have they ever a chance to have a majority, would scrap ALL environmental protections, as they believe that industry sh/would regulate itself and there is no such thing as global warming. And this is the only area in which Ms May, may well be telling the truth about, and be justifiably afraid. Frankly, I do not shudder at the price tag, I shudder at what is going to happen if nothing is done. Money means nothing, and it will mean nothing, when your children and grandchildren are starving to death because of dought and famine. Because the global economy will collapse because of this, just as it has before. We are wasting billions of dollars on Afghanistan, if you are worried about a price tag start there! You will save innocent lives both from Canada and from Afghanistan.

Excuse me, but I have a life, not a "lifestyle". I work, I pay taxes, I shop at the grocery store, I support local charities, and volunteer my efforts on national political issues. I send my kids off to school each morning after making breakfast and picking out shirts and pants and jumpers. I fold laundry while I watch "Desperate Housewives". I've buried both a parent and a spouse. I worry about inflation and the economy, I wonder if I should get four yards of mulch delivered this summer or five yards. I have to fix one of the downspouts from my gutters. I arrange play dates and sleep overs and birthday parties for my kids. I worry about their future. I'm concerned about Iraq and Afghanistan. I wonder if I'm saving enought for retirement. I have a dozen projects to finish at the office before my kids and I go on vacation next week. I have a car battery to jump this weekend and about four or five things to pick up at Home Depot tomorrow afternoon. I have to aerate and fertilize my lawn. I've soccer practice this weekend. And my kids have sewing lessons. I absolutely have to take my recyclables to the town dump this weekend. I make an effort every day to be a good role model for my kids. If you did half the things I do each day as a single parent, I would be impressed. But you probably have a wife at home who handles 70% of this stuff while you drink beer and slovenly moan against gays and how their "fag" agenda is demeaning your existence. Cripes. Have some honor. Gain some self respect. Develop a sense of self worth on your own time, I've got enough on my plate to do it for you. Yes, I've got a fag agenda. It's called getting through each day. It's called just being seen as a person and being treated no different by the government I fund than someone who did nothing to earn a a place in life where he can call me "abnormal". Just who in the h*ll do you think you are? What have you done to earn your special status as "normal"? Being born straight? Spare me - there are more abnormal freaks who are straight than you'd ever find in a gay bar on sake and karoake night. I think it's pretty clear that I'm the normal one. If anything, I think it's up to you to show you're even equal to someone like me. Thrilling and heart tugging post, and I'm sure you're quite normal. Sounds like Liam is quite normal, and it was an excellent post. Though he could've refrained from last bits, but I supsect there is a degree of anger, which is justified, mind you, too. Other peoples sexual 'appetites are no one else's business, unless the said appetites are against the law. Such as: incest, rape, child molestation, or underage. And in fact you are running around all "puffed" up with your heterosexualness.

Actually, I believe it is incredibly sneaky of the Liberal Party and that May was completely sucked in. That riding, was against this, and is going to perhaps run a Liberals candidate there, with out Dion's consent, though he was meeeting with them today, and could well change their minds. If this was actually real. Or indeed, it could be a planning meeting to actually have them, the locals, noisily run their own candidate against Dion's wishes. It is a win, win, win. Dion gets to look good with May, not like a deal breaker, but still poof there goes the Greens' to nothing again in the riding, the Liberals have got May's ringing endorsement nationally, and they got a whack of publicity. And they will get several more 100's of thousands of dollars worth of free advertising, than they have already gotten up til now. Let's face it, this ploy has given Dion a huge boost in visiblity and credibility nationally, and there is not even an election called yet. My bet is, that there will not even be an election called, and all this is merely speculation and hype. Harper is governing by the polls, and the polls are not on his side. Nor in fact any party's side. And I bet Harper/CPC, will have dipped in the polls after this week's Dion May marriage hype. Harper is going to have the 3 PQ by-elections first and see how they go, he would not waste such an golden opportunity, when having a whole election could well be suicide, according to Greg Weston this week. This avenue of non-election action would be shored up as highly possible, by the Bloc MP sitting now as an independant. But we will know soon, there is about a month's window to call it now.
