China has just imposed retaliatory tariffs on Canadian goods
Barquentine replied to xul's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Between a rock and a hard place. How do we avoid pissing off at least one superpower? Is there a way we can play them off against each other, get them bidding against each other for our trade, instead of penalizing us? We have stuff each of them wants. -
Meanwhile, "Donald Trump’s insistence on playing golf at his Florida courses has now cost American taxpayers more than $18 million since he regained the presidency, setting him on a pace to exceed the $151.5 million he spent in his first term." But save $5 by not donating some life- saving drug to a poor kid in some "Shithole country".

Tariffs on Canadian Goods
Barquentine replied to NAME REMOVED's topic in Canada / United States Relations
And just to make things more complicated: "China announced tariffs of up to 100 percent on canola, pork and other foods from Canada on Saturday, in retaliation for Canada’s decision last August to collect steep taxes on imports of Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum." -

Charting the Danger of the Modern Left

I asked: "So do you think there are 2 classes of citizens, the ones he considers real and the other less worthy ones?" In what parallel universe is that not a question?????????????? -

Maybe the first thing we've agreed on. There is hope. -

Twisted your argument? Read! I just asked you a question, which apparently you don't want to answer. You're doing the twisting. There are NOT two grades of citizenship. South Africa gave up Apartheid, Jim Crow laws are gone. Just 'cause he doesn't like someone's politics doesn't mean they aren't real citizens. And the insults he follows up with are childish. -

Cut the Americans some slack

Why did they leave? To increase the shareholder's profits. And while they may make promises or token gestures to "America First", they'll continue to go where the profits are. -

And yet more brilliant, compelling arguments. A citizen is a citizen is a citizen! Anyone can cherry pick incidents, but using them for blanket statements is the weakest argument there is. Your last statement isn't worth responding to. -
The trade war is back on

I stand corrected. Googling the question gives both yes and no. -

So do you think there are 2 classes of citizens, the ones he considers real and the other less worthy ones? "Real citizens". Those are his words. -

So citizens aren't citizens if you disagree with them? Remember, you're just talking about citizens, not immigrants. Who granted you this great power? More stupidity. Did Trump teach you that? -
Enlightenment Now! - Steven Pinker
Barquentine replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I completely agree with this. But there's something so pervasive in us that it must be innate - the idea or feeling that "These days everything is broken", implying things were much better in the past. O tempore, o mores! as the Romans said. It's often a case of "2 steps forward, 1 step back", but I'm an optimistic atheist who believes things will continue to improve, even the environmental situation. (Seems like humans are prone to brinksmanship on serious problems.)
