  1. 2 of 4,000 colleges and universities.. hmm.. they do not all face the same realities.
  2. There has long been research that shows that those who are abused at a young age are likely to do so later on.. especially if the abuse goes unchecked. This is not always the case.. my older brother was not abused but has since been the abuser. If you (yes.. you nationalist specifically) met him in real life, you would think he is a fine upstanding man's man. It just shows that we can't judge the book by its cover.
  3. Just spent 9 days in Seattle and the Puget Sound.. Not a single mention of it. Yes, I was completely disconnected from social media but still even in downtown seattle.. nothing.
  4. apples to oranges.. Today. people have options. If not the one cake baker.. you can simply go to dozens (or hundreds) of others.
  5. Your condemnations are not going to change this. They need to allot more money to the police and in some alternate universe.. not put the police under the societal microscope. We in sparks, nevada have had one heck of a time recruiting new personnel into the police. Our quaint, mellow suburb of 85K is not crime ridden so why the problem? The prospective applicants have expressed a distaste for society blaming all of their ills on them. Few appreciate what they do but most will not hesitate to criticize their every move and do so vehemently.
  6. How? Oh... because I worked in the accounting dept at a major university. Part of why it grew... relaxed academic standards. Yes, they will take race off the list of considered factors but it will continue to be a factor... just not explicitly. Its really hard to attract students when your depts downsize due to lack of funding.. can you seriously dispute this? Enrollment numbers matter. Declining enrollment results in people losing jobs, your athletics getting demoted from Division 1 to a lower rung, and then later on.. you have empty buildings.
  7. This case and others like it... I support. Why? The customer has options. If business X does not want to take my order.. then I just go to business Y. There was a vegetarian restaurant in Boise owned by an older, conservative gentleman. He was quite dismayed to find out that the majority of his clientele was gay men and lesbian women. He made a few less than complimentary comments on social media and in person. What happened? Word of mouth spread that he despised gays and lesbians and six months later, it closed. Night after night of zero customers. The moral to the story. Word of mouth ended him not a government mandate.
  8. No but to base your admissions solely on the highest academic standards is going to lead to lower enrollment, less applicants, and such. As a result, less grant funding and less athletic revenues. These consequences get the admins fired and you can't be so naive as to think that they do not want to keep their jobs?
  9. If you want to pretend that no one shoplifts and gets away with it in Florida.. you are free to do so. It happens everywhere. Chicago is simply an extreme case. Again, not sure how much more clear i can be. When you have limited resources.. you have to ration them out in some way. Most people (yes, I know that you are the exception) would rather see rape, murder, assault dealt with before shoplifting and vagrancy.
  10. It is interesting how when he is called out on the carpet for name-calling and ad-hominem.. his usual reply is "this is an online forum and we can say what we want". However, he will call you out for being less than objective. Internet forum posters usually possess no self awareness. They are omniscient, incredibly wealthy, have never made mistakes, and somehow they are on this forum wasting their time... strange little conundrum.
  11. while i agree with this ruling.. the opposing views show a distinct lack of boots-on-the-ground knowledge of the topic. Yes, you have opinions. Yes, you can listen to talk radio and read headlines. But.. just how many work in the accounting dept or financial aid dept at a given university? Very few. The reality is that for colleges to get their numbers up (which is what matters most).. they can't be overly selective in most cases.
  12. most of the time.. no. If the man finds the woman attractrive.. it is hard to keep the barriers up and not cross the line.
  13. If you really want the true story on jobs.. LAUS (where you get the unemployment rate) is not the best source. QCEW (Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages) is not an estimate and gives you wage information. Only drawback is that it has quite the lag.. six months or so whereas LAUS comes out every month.
  14. You can't judge an economy solely based on the unemployment rate as you know. Besides, not to give you the nuts and bolts but it is an estimate not a count. the ingredients in the model change over time so comparing two points in time is a bit strange if you really think about it. In the US, we calculate the unemployment rate using past LAUS data, unemployment insurance claims (both interstate and intrastate), and QCEW data.
  15. It is simple cost benefit analysis. You have a limited police force and only so much time. To dedicate a large part of your force to shoplifters means that you less police for other more serious crimes. If you look at the financials for the city of chicago.. at least by payroll they have not defunded the police so there has to be more to the story than that. We do the same in Reno.. only so many police and so the homeless problem gets lower priority than other crimes. Yes, we could have police regularly patrolling the edges of downtown looking for drug users but then that means that they are not able to respond to other more important calls.
  16. yes, the unemployment rate was lower in early 2020 than it is today but to say that is 100% due to Trump or Biden shows a lack of knowledge of how the unemployment rate is calculated and human nature
  17. Its a matter of teaching to the test. When the teachers are mandated to gear their entire curriculum and agenda to the questions on a specific standardized test.. that comes at the detriment of teaching process. How you get to the answer is just as important as the answer itself. I am the second in charge at an office and it drives me nuts that we get smart folks in who are so programmed to know answers that they are clueless when you throw even the slightest curve ball. If they knew process.. the curveballs would not be so daunting.
  18. according to a certain poster.. every college/university outside of the state of Florida is a diploma mill. I wish that I would have known that before enduring grad school at University of Nevada. I could have quit studying for comprehensive exams to get into the Phd program. Oh wait... only 15% of applicants passed. So if it is a diploma mill where everyone gets a degree... why would 85% of applicants get told no..
  19. the reason that we have considered homeschooling is not religious. It has to do with current public schools being so data driven and so solely focused on the result of a test and not the process. Our son has some issues and so a bit of a square peg in a round hole. This idea that public schools are focused more on teaching kids about trans, gays, etc than actual reading, math, science is nothing but exaggeration. I have observed one of his classes... not a single mention of it in the classroom. Yes, there was one poster in the hallway.. one of many.
  20. another plug for an underrated Canadian group, Metric
  21. this assumes that the white actor is in fact more competent.
  22. folks do the same with labor market data (unemployment rate, jobs, wages). They google stuff and then put passionate language behind it. In all reality.. they have no idea how the data comes to be. And when I give them the nuts and bolts of it.. their digital eyes glaze over and then they blast away with how I am obfuscating. Translation... they are confused and can not just say that.
  23. so would you say that blacks being in more commercials is a form of racism? Yes or No. Only one word answer is needed.
  24. Folks do not generally come to an online forum for measured, calm, rational discussions. Something has them fired up and they come here as an outlet for that. One indication of this.. the anonymity. They prefer to come here or somewhere else where they can blast away and without any consequences.
