  1. Why does that matter? If they can’t get enough support in parliament, then it goes to those who can.
  2. This is hyperbolic. If parliament was representative of the current vote, the Conservatives would have the most seats.
  3. What evidence do you have that the Liberals want anything but the status quo? They ran away from electoral reform as quickly as they could and haven’t uttered those words since!
  4. Not my stats…. I never did the study. The figure is a rate…. Number of fires per 100,000 vehicles. The rate of fires in ICEs is way higher. Do your feelings trump facts?
  5. I don’t really care about how you feel about battery powered cars…. you conveniently ignore the stats (with citation) that said ICE fires are ~50 times more likely to occur than EV fires?
  6. They don’t need to…. Military at Comox is designated for SAR. Why would we pay for that kind of redundancy? You may as well have criticized the police helicopter unit or the Air Ambulance for not doing the SAR you were talking about.
  7. The CCG Bell helicopters are not dedicated SAR. They always use the military out of Comox for SAR.
  8. You can arm anything, I suppose. They’re not trained in weaponry. Some have fishery officers onboard with sidearms. CCG ships do SAR and fisheries enforcement and research. Of course they talk to other organizations. That doesn’t mean they’re part of the military.
  9. Whether my car burns gas, or is electric, I’m not going to sit in it while it burns. However, the odds of a gas powered car catching on fire are much, much higher than an EV catching on fire. Sorry to ruin your preconceived notions. Don’t pay so much attention to the headlines… dig deeper. https://www.idtechex.com/en/research-article/ev-fires-less-common-but-more-problematic/25749 A recent study conducted by AutoInsuranceEZ using data from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) showed that electric cars in the US caught fire at a rate of 25.1 per 100,000 sales compared to 1,530 for ICE vehicles and 3,475 for hybrids.
  10. I don’t really care about the creative accounting to try and justify a 2% figure to the Americans. CCG is not military and has no military capability. So it makes zero sense to combine them.
  11. The Canadian Coast Guard is not military. Why would you combine a non-military department with the military?
  12. Of course they want the latest and greatest submarine; it’s not their billions. If I was in the navy, I’d want them too! Do we need them? I’m unconvinced that we will lose our Arctic territory if we don’t have them.
  13. Americans saw the Chinese/Russians in open waters. Can’t we just use ships too? Why do we need submarines? That article from 2 years ago had nothing compelling in it to convince me that subs would grant us some magical status in the Arctic.
  14. When was the last time China fished salmon in Canadian waters?
  15. How many of the 200,000 Iranian born Canadians vote Liberal that will switch votes, and how many of them live in swing ridings? I don’t think anyone really cares if a particular group is on a “list”. It’s not enough to sway many people, imo.
  16. Clearly, we need a navy for coastal defence. The fleet make up of the navy is pretty open to argument. Subs? Aircraft carriers? Etc, etc. But you have no compelling arguments to make for your assertion that we need submarines that can operate in the Arctic.
  17. Every MP is part of a political party. Let’s stick with reality, not some made up ideal.
  18. I think an argument can be made that proportional representation could give some buffer for unpopular decisions…. especially given the current make up of parliament where the 2 smaller parties (NDP and Greens)are demanding much more from the Libs on climate change. It worked quite well for Harper to blame the other parties when his government racked up massive deficits. Could be a similar strategy for the Libs if this comes up.
  19. In reality, how many independents are elected? Zero in the last election. Every single MP has party affiliation. Let’s deal with actual realities please. There are ways to solve this issue as well. Mixed-member, or whatever it’s called. Good. 40% of the vote should never lead to 100% of the power. Germany is not an unstable country.
  20. Or just Lib and NDP. Like there is currently. Scare mongering. Make a 5% threshold to get any seats. Problem solved. The minimum threshold takes care of that.
  21. Why do we need subs in the Arctic?
  22. How have we done it thus far? Without ever having subs up there….
  23. So the scenario is that they have 10 subs under the ice in the Arctic, and we have none…. Why do we need to blow them up? Would we even notice them there? What are they doing, if not invading?
  24. You think they will invade from the North via submarine? Can we shoot them once they try and land?
  25. Can we shoot them when they climb out of the subs and up onto land? I’m not entirely sure what we’re supposed to be scared of…. we clearly haven’t needed the ice-subs yet. And our current subs have defended our coastlines by going to Japan and the Mediterranean! Canada’s reach is far and wide! I haven’t heard a compelling case for why Canada needs more and better subs.
