I know of many home schoolers. Some lived in remote places where there was no public school. All the ones I knew moved to town, or moved the kid to a grandparent in town around Grade7 or 8 so the kid could learn some social skills. The parents would never admit it in public, but they knew they weren't capable of teaching beyond Elementary levels. Of the home schoolers I know who lived where public schools were available, they taught their kids their own beliefs rather than facts. The kids severely lacked skills on how to deal with or accept others, carried their parents' prejudices, had only read what their parents 'allowed' them to read and if not for gov't regulated curriculum to learn math etc. would be challenged in that area too. I heard the girls in my office talking about the daughter of a woman I knew... they were a couple Grade 12s themselves. Too much perfume, crappy makeup, wrong clothes, etc etc. This girl was much smarter than either of her parents, but had been kept out of public schools her whole life and had few friends. So I told the kids she was home schooled by Jesus Freaks and honestly didn't even know such things, but was a good kid and they'd actually like her. They made that effort. And they ended up friends. Several years later I met one of the girls at a gathering and she told me of things that you simply would not believe that poor kid wasn't taught.
