If they invade and try to take them, the US & Japanese Navy will be in the way and the Taiwanese will blow it all up before they let it be captured. If they try to do like Russia in Ukraine they'll blow it up themselves. They're screwed either way. China only wants Taiwan for 2 reasons: open naval access to the Pacific ocean, and face saving. It won't be like Ukraine, other countries will not just send weapons, they'll actively step in to prevent the first. On the second, China benefits far more financially with the status quo than saving face is worth. But that's also "Western" thinking... who knows in the end.

The Anglicans and other denominations ran Residential Schools too. Basically the first public schools were religious. Prayers were said at all schools. The Anglican schools were the public schools. The separate schools were Catholic. Eventually prayers disappeared from public schools and lay people replaced the nuns and priests who taught in Catholic schools. All traces of religion will probably disappear from education soon. Judaism, Islaam, and Christianity all share the same God and there are detailed accounts of the histories of the 12 tribes of Israel, whether or not they are entirely factual. Hinduism is about the purification of the individual on the way to Nirvana, which can take thousands of lifetimes. They believe there have been manifestations of God, such as Rama, Buddha, Jesus, etc. The Buddhists believe there’s a fast track to enlightenment by conquering desire and the ego. I think they’re all getting at much the same thing, which is that there’s a kind of path or Dao that we must find and follow to better ourselves. If nothing else, these stories are ancient wisdom that have been passed down because the stories are powerful and have provided structure and guidance. In that regard religion and science compliment each other, because one ends where the other begins. Also, science can’t always help with questions of ethics, which isn’t to say that there aren’t ethical atheists. I think the bottom line is that people need to be aware of the great canon of cultural knowledge: religious, scientific, philosophical, artistic, literary, etc. as best they can or at least inasmuch as it helps them lead purposeful lives. A life without meaning or purpose is hard to live. Our culture is now rife with nihilism and a rejection of wisdom, which I think is very dangerous and sad.
