And where is it going to end? I've considered this for some time as I watch the increasing levels of invective and distrust among American politicians and media. I'm quite certain that regardless of who wins the election there's going to be a major increase in political violence. Both sides, and I'm not talking about the nobodies, but the political leaders, are saying the others are cheating. There seems to be a shrinking any ability to work together. And no, it's not all Trump, not be a long shot. I've seen no American political figure in the news that impresses me as anything but an ignorant, self-serving political whore. But I think Douglas Murray, one of my favorite writers and authors, put it quite concisely in his column today. Is America splitting apart? Just a few years ago it would have seemed an absurd idea. Today the signs from the outside do not look good.A people with no shared narrative or history will find it very hard to keep a lid on disorder and violence In Murray's belief, that shared narrative is fading. The left increasingly sees Americans founding, history and traditions as nothing but an example of shameful brutality and wants to tear up its own history, tear down the statues of their own founders, and completely change America. The other side is still proud of America's history, accomplishments and traditions. It is becoming harder to communicate across the gulf, as, increasingly, the two Americas cannot consort or discuss with each other. And if there is one reason above all why that should be the case it is because they no longer have a shared story. A portion of the American people still revere their history, the Founding Fathers, the constitution, flag, anthem and much more. They see it as symbols of a glorious past, a country which has fought for its own and others’ liberty, and the once-admired idea of American exceptionalism. Another portion believe that America is exceptional only in being exceptionally bad. Rather than thinking well of their country or their forebears they see the whole American experiment as unusually unfair and uncommonly unequal. Nor is it unusual for a population to be ignorant about large chunks of its own history. What is unusual, and odd and unhealthy, is for a large portion of a country to only have one set of ideas about their country’s past, and for all of those ideas to be negative. Between these two positions, it is exceptionally hard to see how any consensus can be achieved. People like to pretend that if their candidate wins the election in November, the divisions in American society will stop. But they will not, because the divide now lies at the most fundamental, tectonic levels of the republic, about who the country is. Historically speaking, such a divide will inevitably escalate into increasing violence and even civil war, unless stopped by some great unifying force that goes beyond party politics or identity. But there is no sign of such a thing on the horizon. https://unherd.com/2020/09/can-america-hold-apart/1 point

Canadian nationalism has been declared extinct by its present prime minister, but Canada is far from being a "post national state". After methodically describing the history and evolution of Canadian nationalism through today, this chap concludes that Canada is forever doomed to define itself as "not American" because the newer left-wing brand of Canadian nationalism, just like the previous right-wing, pro-British brand of nationalism, demands exactly that. Hating America at some level is essential to this exercise and political framework, and has been from the very beginning. Will Canada ever be able to define its national identity and place in North America without using the United States as an essential foil ?1 point

We've tried that, they have made it clear they don't want to follow any rules except the ones that benefit them. They're the ones that have made this zero-sum.1 point

I/we were in China from the mid-90s and one of our frequent discussions was how the West saw the light at the end of the "normalization" tunnel. Such discussions always ended with the comment that that light was a very large, very fast train that would flatten the West if we didn't get a grasp on reality early on.1 point

Another Covid drug with 95% success rate announced today by Moderna...Coincidentally the announcement came on Monday. A week after the first drug was announced. A rebuttal for those who claimed the announcement coincided with the US election in favour of president elect Joe Biden... This is a fantastic news! https://investors.modernatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/modernas-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-meets-its-primary-efficacy1 point

I’d prefer a new day to celebrate the sacrifice of our veterans that lacked the symbolism of WWI, that absurd, amoral clash of European empires. When I think of Flanders fields, poppies and all that, these lines written by Wilfred Owen, a soldier killed just seven days before November 11, 1918, come to mind: Dulce et Decorum Est Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.— Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,— My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.1 point

First off, I'd love it if someone could translate this to English for me. Second, the wars are 'defensive' from the POV of helping other nations stop guys like Hitler from taking over Europe, stopping the Taliban, the North Koreans, etc. Canadians died in those places and there was never any chance that the people who served there were going to bring home slaves, war booty, etc.1 point

To be fair: Canada was invaded and conquered by both France and England. The Yanks did once in the War of Independence, and tried again in 1812 but had their ass handed to them quickly that time. The Fenians did again but worst of all in 1921 the US had a battle plan the included invading Canada.1 point

Well, even football hooligans try to avoid attacking women, children and the elderly. They instead were easy targets for the roving bands of ANTIFA/BLM black-shirts. When faced with REAL opposition...men fearing for their family's safety inside the hotels...these pricks got what they deserved. That you're willing to look the other way is your choice...but remember...the mob is always hungry for witches. How pointy is your hat? Usually, that is...since you're without... Those Biden supporters that didn't quite make the rioter's grade found out...beaten & robbed by their own street thugs...how ironic.1 point

Most Americans, including myself, do not hate Canada. If anything, we are guilty of being quite indifferent towards Canada without a complete understanding of how the national relationships have evolved over time. It is far more interesting to hear a Canadian (i.e. this YouTube video) explain the evolution of Canadian nationalism from a very Canadian perspective, without the tactical poop flinging across the border for fun and games. Canada's shift from right-wing to left-wing nationalism is fascinating and consistent with the changing domestic and foreign circumstances it has encountered. I have long been a fan of J.L. Granatstein's books on the topic but he doesn't seem to consider the anti-Americanism to be a permanent condition, subject to changing policies in the United States. If America ever were to adopt most of Canada's social and political policies, it remains to be seen if it would dilute and vanquish the anti-Americanism that is currently so popular...and essential.1 point

Yup, I'm pretty sure that incident has been documented in the affidavits being presented to the courts. Apparently 4 am was picked because it was before the morning shift showed up. There's a guy in another forum I frequent who seems really connected with all of this stuff. I brought up the PA fraud, and he claims that 600,000 PA mail in ballots will be thrown out. Time will tell.1 point

Well, Canadians (and Americans) do find accommodation at the personal and practical level across millions of lives, but the aggregate nationalist identity still demands a purposeful separation and rejection to exist. This is not just a Canadian attribute, but Canada's history made it much more likely and enduring, and even persists domestically with Quebec. The Americans initially defined their national identity as fiercely not British, but this gave way to an American nationalism that was no longer challenged or threatened by a declining British Empire, with the United States creating it's own identity and history on its way to becoming a world superpower. Being British is now just a punchline in Hollywood movies and actors with bad teeth.1 point

I would beg to differ. The worst nightmare is a Biden/Harris presidency. I'm pretty sure that all of the presidential votes given were for Trump, he was named on all ballots. Just to add to my previous comment of 71 million votes, he got 63.9 million votes in 2016. His increase this time out is breathtaking.1 point

For the above video, I'll just give you a snippet of what she's saying. She lays the foundation of Yugoslavia after the wall was taken down and the Yugoslavian government realized they needed to rebrand themselves as National Socialists, and hang onto power. They used the playbook that was so successful(at the beginning) in Nazi Germany. So step one is to instill hatred in the people to get them to divide into opposing group think. In Yugoslavia's case, they used religion successfully. Muslim vs Catholic vs Orthodox. Once they start to form distinct groups, then comes the next phase. "In the next phase, you must start making social policies so terrible they will inevitably lead to countless individual disadvantages. Once the consequences of such governmental policies become obvious, you must start claiming that the cause of these inequalities is nothing but discrimination and hatred of one group towards another. And naturally you must start screaming that those inequalities must be corrected by favouring the oppressed, discriminated group over the oppressor group. Enter national quotas for hiring. [For the US] Replace "national" with race or women. Once the groups are formed and well defined, needless to say all of the media were government controlled and were fueling the narrative of discrimination and hatred relentlessly..." In the US, the media is not controlled by government, but notice how they largely have the very same perspective, aside from Fox and fringe organizations. In fact, all of the US news outlets is apparently owned by 2 or 3 organizations. Edit: Oops, I think it's more like 4 or 5 corporations.1 point
