  1. In the book I'm reading right now, (see my above comment to Hal) Nawaz estimates that 25% of Muslims worldwide agree with violent jihad and that we shouldn't expect much help from "conservative Muslims", since they do not agree with the violent jihad, but will fully support and fight against any gender equality, etc.

  2. I'm just reading "Islam and the Future of Tolerance" by Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz. Nawaz describes the variety of lines of thought amongst Islamists, and outlines what he's doing to combat it. I'm not finished it yet, but it's interesting so far, a different perspective, coming from a Muslim trying to reform AND change the backward thinking of so-called moderate Muslims at the same time, which he feels is essential - he feels the religion needs reforming AND that moderates need to stop the backwards thinking - both at the same time.

  3. We should never ever be accepting refugees from america. They should be stopped at the border, have their health checked and sent back.

  4. The more Islam Canada imports, the more Islam ALL CANADIANS will get...like it or not. If you disagree with Islamification of Canada, you're a greasy Islamophobe and a racist...as Islam is now a skin colour.

  5. So what? Our immigration system is not designed as a social program for the world's poor or downtrodden. It's supposed to be designed to do what is in the interest of Canada, and that's it.

  9. What context do you need? If you leave your baby in a car and go shopping or to the bar, chances are, the baby will still be there and alive when you get back - so, why all the fuss? Why do people call the police and social services when the chance of your baby being murdered is so much less than falling in a bathtub (or whatever lame comparison is in fashion).

  13. Since the actual problem over the last century is the 700% increase in population - and China is the ONLY country that has done a bloody thing to check their contribution, this is one instance where we really SHOULD be more like China.

  16. And here is the fundamental disconnect between the Left and Right. Taxes are money forcibly taken from citizens against their will in order to serve the community. As such, it is immoral and unethical to spend them on anything else, or to waste them, or to spend them on something which isn't necessary for the community. I have no complaint when taxes are properly spent on health care, on roads and highways, on border control or defense, on pensions and environmental safety. Taking my money and giving it to foreigners is quite another thing. I'm willing to make exceptions in the case of legitimate refugees, but 90% of those we let in under the refugee program are not, in my opinion, legitimate refugees. They're economic migrants. The CBC itself reports on people who are now making their way to Mexico for the purpose of getting into the US so they can cross that country and come to Canada to claim refugee status. These are NOT refugees of any kind and if you want to spend your money on them, presuming you have any, that's fine. Leave mine alone. Then spend your money on it, not mine.

  17. At what point can you look at a group and claim that they accept or even "like" something? For example, how many hockey fans have to accept or like fighting for us to say "hockey fans accept fighting as part of the sport"...50%...60%? When I see 15,000 stand and cheer a fight at a hockey game, I would be comfortable saying that "hockey fans accept or even like fighting in the game. In the case of Islam, when you see stats that show high 80% or even 90% acceptance of certain ideas, I'd say that a high enough number of Muslim acceptance of stoning, hatred of homos, rape, misogyny, FGM, hatred of western beliefs etc. that I can comfortably claim that "muslims have a stone age backward philosophy".

  19. The best option is Canada and the US get on the same track and end this charade that we are "better" or "morally superior" than the US when it comes to taking in illegals. We have the same issues. We may not use the same choice of words but the pith and substance of the issues are the same and how we handle them can't be at cross purposes. I see no friggin difference in Trump and Trudeau bottom line when it comes to having to face this issue. One is ignorant and blunt about it the other smiles behind phony gritted teeth posing. Either way, limits and structure to what can and can not be accommodated and how to screen and manage it are coming.

  23. Anyone believing that Canada has all of these carefully protected freedoms and rights has been watching far too much American TV. Remember, this is the party when last in power jailed a man (Andy McMechan) for the horrendous crime of selling his own barley - when it was clearly identified and agreed in court that it was not against any law in Canada. It was our current Minister of Public Safety who masterminded this theft of his freedom. BTW: that was IMHO living proof that the so-called "charter of rights and freedoms" is completely pointless. Note that there was not a single member of the legal profession in Canada with the brains and balls to stand up to such a travesty of justice.

  24. You guys who try to put your own spin and psychological assessment on this reality, you're sooooo not on the same page! You can blab about irrationality, over-reaction, and give all the stats of getting killed in a thousand different ways by comparison - you're still not getting it - tourism is down in some hot spots, due to terrorism! You're the ones over-reacting with the issue of this thread, and giving irrelevant responses. Why do people "over-react?" when you could die just sitting on your couch, choking on a chip - who knows why. Maybe, people don't want to be reminded of a news clip they saw on tv as they stroll on the street of Paris. Maybe the romantic song "Under the Bridges of Paris" had taken on a new meaning - "how would you like to be, hiding under the bridge with me?" Or, the song "The Last Time I Saw Paris," evoke this graphic images we saw on tv. We've got Under The Bridges of Paris song - and it's a very romantic song. But when I hear it now, somehow it doesn't sound like it used to. The time of "innocence" of that song is gone, and it's replaced by stark evil reality. Even the news report on the video above damage tourism, "St Fritz Cafe - Parisians enjoying their Friday evening were sitting ducks for the terrorists." Ahhh! These two oldies has to go to the Nostalgia Thread! Definitely!

  25. We're not talking about rationality, or how people should take it. We're talking about the reality of terrorism having its effect on tourism, and the economy! If you want to discuss philosophy, or psychology, create your own thread!

  39. Sounds like Trump also blew the doors off 30 years of free trade dogma by stating that cars sold in the US should be made in the US. Can't wait until every other industry in the US starts clamouring for some of that too along with the same helping heapful of tax and regulatory cuts, that US auto makers are looking forward to. Story
