Drea
WalMart killed Quesnel. There are NO small businesses that survive there at all. It's a ghost town. One either works in one of the pulp mills or WalMart. That being said, I still shop there but I think WalMart should not move into communities of less than 50,000 people. M.Dancer
I've learned that I need to ask for links from you. Links? Quesnel ( The woodsmart city) is a pulp and paper town. If pulp and paper directly employ 3000 people out of a pop. base of 21,000, how many are supposed to have low paying retail jobs? Somehow I doubt that Walmart killed all the non retail small businesses, or even all retail in Quesnel. Apparently Warehouse One is looking for a manager in Quesnel........ The retail and service sectors in Quesnel are strong. We have recently welcomed large chains like the Best Western and Sandman Hotels, Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, and Boston Pizza. Specialty retail stores, new media companies, and internet services companies make Quesnel home. The thriving small business sector in Quesnel employs non-wood manufacturing and high-tech companies, artisans, hospitality providers and consultants. Health and athletics specialists, farmers and ranchers, and small manufacturers prosper in our community. http://www.cariboord.bc.ca/Business/Econom...les/quesnel.htm
Drea
No I don’t have a link I drove up there. I grew up in the Cariboo and let me tell you there is a lot less small businesses now than there were 20 years ago. The two malls in Quesnel are all but boarded up. Boitanio Mall in W/Lake has hardly any stores left... You have linked to a propaganda site. Geez do you think the Cariboo Regional District is going to have anything negative to say about their crap-ass little towns? They are doing everything to keep the populace and encourage new people to move there. They are certainly going to use only the positives and downplay the negatives. Drive up north (I went last month) and lookit all the small boarded up businesses. There are many. WalMart may not be directly responsible for all the closures but they sure aren’t helping their neighbouring small businesses now are they? So you drove through it and observed that the town is "killed?" There are boarded up shops? Well guess what? Horse and buggy shops closed too...should they have boycotted cars to save them? It sounds from Momo's "propagabnda link" that business is booming there...just not the 1950s kind of business. And yes, Walmart probably is helping business there. When there are more employed people, there is more disposable income, meaning more retail, meaning better economy. Regional economy too. I bought a can a bug spray at Frank's store in Cherryville. I paid $12.53 for it. Yesterday I saw it at Walmart for less than half of that. Would I pay $12.53 for it again? Probably, because driving a whack of klicks back to Vernon to save a few dollars doesn't make sense. Would I pay $12.53 for it if Frank's stare was next door to Waklmart? Not a chance. And next time I'll remember to bring bug spray. Frank's store serves a purpose. So does walmart. If Frank's store could put walmart out of business, I'm sure it would. Renegade
WalMart may not be directly responsible for all the closures but they sure aren’t helping their neighbouring small businesses now are they? Why assume the closing of small business is a bad thing? Sure it is worse for the small business owner, but it is better for the consumer, afterall the consumer with his dollar votes on which retail outlet he prefers. White Doors
Then they will work elsewhere, and some other store will fill the need. That is the way the cookie always crumbles. Oh I don't force them out, I just chose to not spend my money there, is all. And it's not making any difference at all. But you keep doing that. lol. they are the most successfull retailer in the world. I'm sure that is why you don't like them. A successfull business? haha

JerrySeinfeld
Wal Mart is a good place to buy things if you want to save some money and aren't too concerned about long term quality or the logo on the shirt. If you're giong on a cruise or to Hawaii for a couple of weeks in the winter, it's a good spot to pick up some last minute things like flip flops, shorts, t shirts, socks or beach towel and some sunscreen. Generally the prices are amazing but you're not going to impress the A Listers at the high end cocktail party with their clothing. In terms of all the other socially concious stuff I don't really give two shits, but if that floats your boat then vote with your wallet, go buy your next golf shirt at a hemp store and quit your whining. Sure it is worse for the small business owner, but it is better for the consumer, afterall the consumer with his dollar votes on which retail outlet he prefers. and I fully believe in that, voting with my dollar! BUT, when a wal-mart comes in and wipes out all competitors, it can then ask whatever it wants for products, as it has exterminated all it's competition. Wal-mart is in a unique position to do that initially ( substantial buying power), then once all or almost all the competition is gone, they are free to charge, whatever the choose. That doesn't benefit anyone. A healthy, diverse marketplace is what benefits us all, on price, on product and on employment.

Black Dog
cybercoma: What particularly gets me are these people who are on about "urban sprawl." Give me a break. Should we not expand cities, create places for people to work, create places for people to shop for things at lower prices, ever again? Nope. Cities cannot expand unless we're building schools, libraries or hospitals. That's a pretty unsophisticated and inaccurate characterization of the urban sprawl critique. margrace
I doubt you have much disposable income to make a difference in anything. I wonder what this had to do with the argument, especially when someone else argued that it was the low income people who support Wal-Mart. I know lots of people who chose not to shop at Wal-Mart, income had nothing to do with it. The other problem is that a lot of what is for sale at Walmart is cheap and throw away. Ontario is has a big problem with dumps overfull, see the corralation Edited August 7, 2007 by margrace

White Doors
Kuzaad was insinuating that her dolaars not being spent there would make a difference, so I thought i would bring her down to size. It makes no difference and since she brought it up, I highly doubt she has much of a disposable income at all. It's just my opinion. Can't we express opinions on here? White Doors
Hi Kuzadd Please provide a link on your assertion that walmart goes in and kills competition and then jacks up prices. buffycat
Where is this claim made White Doors? Care to quote it? Wal mart has been brought to task many times over their shady pricing adventures - heck a google search will bring up almost 2 million hits. Why don't you do your own research - or do you need spoonfeeding?
